A big hiccup on a lot of checkrides is how to tell the GPS unit you're using that you've gone missed, especially on ILS approaches where the GPS unit is solely used as a back up.
Check out IFR ground school at flight-insight...

So helpful. This has been confusing me in my early IFR training and I feel like this was the most concise and clear explanation I’ve seen anywhere.

Literally cannot say how much of a goldmine these videos are. Thank you for taking the time to concisely explain this in a way that's easy to understand. Feel so much better with the Garmin now.

Thanks I flew last night and didn’t unsuspend my hold in Lou of a procedure turn as I was cleared straight in really confused me as the gps said turn right when my approach course was to my left and then I had to go missed and didn’t hit suspend for the missed and reallly got confused and behind the airplane my instructor let me make the mistake to really hit home so I’ll never forget and he explained it but this video really made it all clear

Thank you for doing a video to explain the concept way better than I ever could with just text. It's one of those confusing things and it's important to feel comfortable with all aspects of IFR flight

Yeah, I wouldn’t be teaching folks to use the suspend button the way you have it in this video. Only when reaching the missed approach altitude would I hit the OBS button. This is particularly true for RNAV approaches. The problem with this video is that if I don’t hit the climb out altitude of the missed approach procedure and then hit the OBS button, the 430/530 will sequence to the next way point on the missed and tell you to turn encourse immediately- which of course could kill you. Typically, the plate will have a textual representation of the missed (which i s ruling), and it will say something like “climb to x, then…” The “then” is when you hit the OBS button. No sooner than that. So climb straight out, hit some altitude on the plate, THEN hit the OBS button to sequence. It has to be in that order. Your life depends on it.

This is a good point. Though it wasn't a factor in this scenario (no RNAV sequencing and a straight out climb dont cause the unit to indicate a turn when unsuspending), it probably deserves a mention. On this approach and similar ones it's good to unsuspend as soon as you reach runway threshold. You're above all safe altitudes, and you need to see the intercept on the moving map. There are plenty of RNAV approaches where hitting unsuspend early will sequence into a turn where an obstruction could be. This isn't the case on G1000 and newer as they automatically unsuspend when reaching a turning altitude. Thanks!

@@flightinsight9111that makes me wonder about the Dr that found an obstruction turning left while going missed at Steamboat Springs a few years ago. Assumption was that he just screwed up, but he could have been screwed by automation and unfamiliarity with this feature’s peculiarities (which clearly everyone is not fully aware of). I don’t know if the NTSB considered that.

So is it safe to say that if your doing a localizer or ils approach that your strictly going to be using ground based navigation?

I’ve notice that your gps has the hold pattern displayed. But when I load an approach that has one it does not display one.

Full price for an online ground school is the same cost as 1~2 hours of instructed time in a rented plane. If you need to start with nothing, there are free ways to get the books but there will be a point where you need to be able to shell out some real money if you want to get into flying.
