C.J.'s so exhausted here. Being WHPS was stressful enough, but becoming CoS increased it hugely. Leo chose her because he recognized something kindred in her. C.J. became very much like Leo as she grew into the role, and her sense of duty to others over herself would have killed her eventually, just like it killed him (granted, she didn't have his history of addiction). I think the difference was that her strongest love was Danny, and was increasingly outside of the workplace. Leo's strongest love was Jed.

What made him more awesome is he never let that compromise his job. There was more than once that he came up with something bad for the White House but he didn't set it aside because of how he felt for CJ. He did let CJ know ahead of time a few times, but he never stopped doing his job. Because he loved his job, just as CJ loved hers. I also get why she didn't want to stay at the White House. She had 8 years of fantastic experiences there. Trying to do it under someone else wouldn't be the same, as there would be the ghosts of those who passed on (Leo McGarry, Mrs Lanningham), and the ghosts of those who weren't working there any more. It was time to do something different. And now she had time to do that with Danny.

I really like the way they didn't actually put Danny and CJ and Josh and Donna together until the show was almost over. So many shows ruin the great, entertaining tension by resolving the "Will they/won't they" dynamic too early on.
@cardsfanboy3 жыл бұрын
I'll argue that this worked (and the Donna/Josh worked) because they didn't waste time with a will they or won't they subplot, they put the 'feelers' out there, but left it alone and didn't waste valuable screen time with a romantic subplot that was going to be disruptive to the story... The will they won't they stories are destructive simply because it makes one or both of the characters to appear to be idiots.

I despaired of network television, and then along came The West Wing - the long shots, the dialogue, the unparalleled ensemble cast... and then it was over, and once again I despaired. Studio 60 did not meet my expectations, and I waited... and then came The Newsroom - the long shots, the dialogue, the unparalleled ensemble cast (A coincidence? Perhaps not). I can appreciate that The West Wing had a good run, but is television of this kind simply too fast-paced and smart for the audience?

In my experience, the people who are most faithless about this tend to be the ones who need to work on themselves. They're not horrible people, but they're looking too hard for what someone can do for themselves and not what they can do for others.

I liked this storyline because it felt less artificial than how love is often portrayed in shows or movies. Too often, it is shown as this inevitable thing where people know they are soulmates meant for each other the moment they meet, and nothing will stand in their way. That might happen to some people, but many times, it is not that simple. CJ and Danny's relationship took a long time to develop. Many people, especially those who are a bit older, have had painful breakups or difficult relationships that can make them a bit cynical and/or more guarded about opening up to someone. In real life, the words might not be quite as perfect as this scene, but I think the emotions are right on target. You never know at what age you'll meet a person with whom you'll really connect, and you just have to decide not to let it pass by when it happens.
