Mark Martin had an absolute career resurgence in 2009 after two years of running partial schedules. But at the end of the day he couldn’t pull it together to beat his teammate Jimmie Johnson. Here’s the story of Mark Martin’s 2009 season.

If Brian France is the Godfather of all NASCAR busts, then Mark Martin is the Godfather of Missing Cups. 2009 was a great season for him, bad finishes like his crash at the fall Talladega cemented his fate and after that year he never recovered. Still what I admire about Mark is that at 60 years old he doesn't have any regrets over his career, and the fact that he was able to handle those defeats with a strong attitude and sportsmanship is amazing.

That 48 car without the fuel mileage problems at Michigan twice and getting wrecked by Hornish at Texas would’ve ran away with the Non Chase championship that year. Chad and Jimmie were bringing top 5 top 10 cars to the track every week. Jeff Gordon too. People forget that Gordon was top 3 in points for most of that season with Stewart and Johnson. They were clearly the top 3 for majority of the season.

Bruno Spano Juan Pablo Montoya 2015. Won the Indy 500, ended up tied on points, lost the tie breaker (Dixon’s 4 wins to Juan’s 2), and if last race didn’t have double points he would have won. He actually crashed into his teammate during that final race too. Definitely worthy of a missing rings.
@psychlops924
@psychlops924 4 жыл бұрын
I forgot to mention that 2016 ended up being Montoya’s last full time INDYCAR season. He was replaced by (now) 2 time champion Josef Newgarden in 2017. Who knows what would have happened for Juan - and Josef - if Juan had won the 2015 championship.

Mark Martin is arguably the greatest driver to never win a championship. he finished 2nd FIVE times, all to drivers who won a combined 21 championships (Earnhardt twice, Gordon, Stewart and Johnson). he also had a string where, in 16 out of 18 seasons from 1989 to 2006, Mark finished in the top 10 in points. you can't consistently finish that well in the points and not be considered one of the greatest to ever do it

Very true. However, Johnson performed admirably for his sophomore season and only lost by 90 points. Johnson actually out performed Kenseth in terms of wins and top fives. I personally think Johnson deserved the 03 & 04 championships more than his 07 & 08 championships.

69Charger01 Kenseth already had the title clinched before Homestead and then blew up at Homestead. That 90 point margin is very misleading.

Another Missing Rings you could probably do for 2009 is Jeff Gordon. He had the best average finish from that season, and was in the hunt until Talladega. He made points up with a mediocre finish at Texas, and then was officially eliminated mathematically after Phoenix.
