Watercolors with Michael

4 жыл бұрын

Since both Holbein and Misson Gold watercolros come from Asia I decided to see how they looked side by side. I use the set of 24 for each of these.
I swatch out all the colors (plus a few more) so you can see what is similar and what is different between the two different sets.
Enjoy the painting and the video. Thanks for checking it out. Please feel free to like and share the video, and subscribe to my channel. I do post videos every week, so be sure to check back again soon.
Some of my paintings may be available on Etsy.

Thanks for the video 👍 great comparison. I have mission gold in a pallet for more than a year. They never dry up to hard cakes and do not need pre wetting.

I totally agree!. I've had these mission gold paints for quite a while and they are still not rock hard, and re-activate quickly.

It would be interesting to see this comparison done matching up the actual pigments by code and not name since the names are so different by brand, for example putting mission “cerulean” against Phthalo blue green shade which is what it really is, and cerulean and cobalt cerulean to compare the same pigments brand to brand, as well as to utilize their newly formulated single pigment versions of many of the pigments used here like Burnt Sienna. In all i enjoyed the watch and hope to see an update with the same in depth reviews :-) Thanks

It's always a little better comparison to do apples to apples, but, with a limited budges, and these colors included in the sets i bought, these are the ones that got used.

Michael, I hope there will be a part two? I was really interested in your overall opinion regarding the Mission paints as compared to your other two sets, since I have no other sets to compare to... Thanks for your thoughts as you went along hugs Marsha

Marsha, I think the jury is still out. The colors are a bit different than my M. Grahams. I've really come to love my M. Grahams, and these seem a bit odd in comparison. I know that if I had started with these and then tried M. Graham, I would probably be saying the same thing. Its just a matter of working with them for a while. Let me get a few more paintings under my belt and I'll let you know how I feel about them then.

Yeah, the cerulean is a pthalo blue RS. I don't care, as the price and value of the 24 single pigment set accommodates that. Also, the Mijello doesn't use ox gall, so their paints don't charge as much as others. I'm ok with that, the way I paint. You can add a surfactant to your water if you want more movement

ohhh! thank you so much for sharing this video with us! :) it was very interesting to see the colour range comparison of the two sets. may I ask... how well do the holbein, mijello mission, and m.graham cure(dry) in your palettes in comparison to each other? i have some sennelier paints that people have said to dry similarly to m.graham but i'm not liking that they stay rather 'moist and soft' so i'm looking for another brand that will cure 'dry-er' in my palette. any advice would greatly be appreciated! hope you're having a nice day!

All of these stay shiny and just a bit moist when dried. The M. Graham is the most "damp" of the group, and the Holbein dries the most. I will say that I carry my paints around, close them, open them, etc. and have never had trouble with them running.

Watercolors With Michael thank you very much for your reply! :) i guess i’ll be staying away from mgraham then, no big deal. i have several sennelier and some dry very well as if they didnt contain honey and others can be a bit troublesome (french vermilion). thank you so much for your advice! it’s reall helpful! :D

Love, love, love mission gold, they are so luminous and great for realism. If you want movement though you need ox gall adding in the water as they don’t contain it. I prefer them as they are. They are also honey based.
@watercolorswithmichael

I happen to have some ox gall. That might be a fun experiment to try. I think I'll give that a go, and maybe a video about it too. Thank you. As for the paints, I'm still trying to get used to them. I'm holding off my full judgement until I get a few more paintings under my belt with them.

So far I just have MGRAHAM paints. I liked yout demostration of the Mission Gold paints and the Holbein sets. I like the Mission Gold set best. Can you tell me if the palletts are sold separately? I enjoy your live chat on Wednesday night. Where did you buy the Mission Gold set of paints?
@watercolorswithmichael
@watercolorswithmichael 4 жыл бұрын
The palettes are sold sepearately. I got the paints and the palette on Amazon. They were the best prices I could find on both. You can go to the Products tab on Watercolorswithmichael.com and find links to them both.

Dana Kolpin You can buy a set of mission gold that comes with their bulletproof palette. Set of 36 x 7ml tubes with palette is about 70 dollars if you are in USA and 75 GBP if in UK. Search on Amazon mission gold 36 palette set. If you prefer single pigments they do a full single pigment set too, but no palette.

Py150 is nickel azo yellow and it makes things kind of glowy. Maybe that is why they add it to everything? With all the multiple pigments it makes me leery to try either holbein or mission gold... also I have A LOT of paint, I still love trying new kinds :) thanks for your video.
@watercolorswithmichael

I've got a LOT of paints too. I think I could paint for years and never need to buy more. But I probably will buy more by the end of the year. The dual pigment tubes don't bother me much, but the triples do. I still don't know why manufactures want to put 3 in a tube. go figure.

Renea Clark Mission Gold do a single pigment set too if you don’t want mixed pigments. I don’t have an issue with them, been using them for 4 years, no problems, no mud. Their colours look cleaner than most when on paper imho. I prefer them to Holbein.

Hi can u plz help me make a dicision between mission gold and holbien. Thank you
@watercolorswithmichael

For me, I'd go with Holbein. They just seem a bit more natural, and more suited to how I want to see a painting. The Mission Gold, while very good, seem overly bright. Just my two cents.
