Would also like help going from a sit to stand position without using arms. I'm a bilateral below knee amputee with severe shoulder osteoarthritis.

Any suggestions for someone who can’t use their arms? (Bilateral AKA)

Good advice but nothing about sofas which dont have two arms such as a wheelchair. Most sofas are lower than a chair and I had difficulty until I placed a 6 inch riser under each foot. Rising is easier nose over toes. Thx.

Thanks for sharing! Places like sofas and deep chairs, such as recliners, are particularly tricky. If you can elevate yourself, scoot to the edge of the chair, and commit your weight forward (nose over toes) then you have the best chance for success. It is never easy, but it can get better.

What about bilateral prosthetic legs with small pull handle to unlock knee extension to sit? How can people with those sit down without collapsing? Especially elder generation 😵

Thank you for your question. That is a unique situation you are describing. A little difficult to answer here in the comments. So, we will work on answering this in a video as part of our “You Asked” Playlist. Please send us an email at admin@missiongait.org, so we can let you know when that video is published for you to view.

Please demonstrate with OSSUR TOTAL KNEE 2000 , as iam very much struggling on it while sitting

With the Total Knee for bilateral prosthetic limbs, standing up looks the same as demonstrated at 0:41. Sitting down requires the same upper body control to be able to ease yourself down in the chair. This is tough as it requires a lot of upper body strength to perform and a very hard push from the legs back into each socket. The model for this video makes it look much easier than it actually is. The best thing you can do to ease this challenge is to find higher surfaces to sit on whenever possible. The biggest safety note is that the Total Knee needs to be locked out bilaterally for a bilateral above knee amputee. Unfortunately we don't currently have any bilateral amputee patient models that have the Total Knee, but we will definitely make a note of it.

Mission Gait So I don’t think when this much of effort and struggle is required for sitting with knee, which is the most basis requirement like walking. Then it is not recommendable for bilateral above knee amputee. Pl give your un-biased view. Thanks

Where are you from Ritesh ?

Ritesh, the Total Knee is a more cost friendly prosthetic knee, so it has significant limitations for walking and for sit to stand transfers. This difficulty is considerably increased with the bilateral above knee amputee. Prostheses with hydraulic or computerized components would make the process much easier. The primary downside of these components is the significant difference in cost, which is often out of reach for many people.

That's good. But what about trilateral amputee..
@MissionGait
@MissionGait 4 жыл бұрын
That definitely complicates things even further. Unfortunately we were only able to discuss bilateral amputees in this video, but we will look to consider additional challenges within the upper extremities in further videos. Most of our content will be focused on the lower extremities as our focus is towards gait.
