This was their biggest hit. Peaking at #21 i think on the billboard top 100. They were only together for 3 years. This is a banger and is considered one of the best rock songs of all time and I agree. Mountain.

In 1970 I paid $16 for a 2 day festival in Toronto that included Mountain, Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The Band, Ten Years After, Traffic and many other bands. Two days of being blown away by incredible music! I was 17 then and having the time of my life. Thanks guys for your reaction and bringing back such amazing memories for me!

I could have named this song by the first two whacks of the cow bell. Seriously, who could forget this song? I see by other commentors that they have other songs and they might ring a bell when I hear them but darn, this is the only song by them that I remember. Always fun to visit FSR.

Ethan: One reason you probably haven't heard of them before is that, unfortunately, they didn't stay together very long -- they formed in 1969, and disbanded in 1972 -- and although they released three albums during that period ("Climbing!", "Nantucket Sleighride", and "Flowers of Evil"), "Mississippi Queen" (from "Climbing!") was their only top-40 hit. Leslie West (guitarist and vocalist) has since cited a combination of drug use within the band, and bassist Felix Pappalardi' developing hearing impairments due to the loud concerts, as primary reasons for the breakup. They re-formed in 1973 and recorded a fourth album, "Avalanche", as well as a double-LP live album "Twin Peaks", but neither album cracked the Top-100 or yielded any hit singles, either, and they broke up again at the end of 1974. So, yeah, they were kind of a "one-hit wonder", in the strict sense of the term. They're in that peculiar "greatest bands you've never heard of" category where they really *should* have been bigger than they were, but somehow, for some reason, the stars just didn't *quite* align for them. :-/

Nantucket Sleighride needs to be next. Mountain performed at Woodstock. Leslie West was once considered for a guitarist spot in Lynyrd Skynyrd. I always thought he would've fit well. Mountain was a powerful band. I saw Leslie West and Corky Laing at a local venue about 15 Years ago. What a great show!

Hi guys. First response in a time as I've been back to work properly for the first time in 18 months! Good to see you're keeping well. Great reaction to a brilliant song. Mountain are really overlooked as a great band from the classic heyday of rock music. Leslie West was a great guitarist and vocalist. It may only be very short at 2'31" but it is perfectly formed and it has cow bell... what more could you want!😁 As others have said here they did do some other really good songs - Never In My Life, Theme from An Imaginary Western and For Yasgur's Farm - but my personal favourite is Nantucket Sleighride(To Owen Coffin). It has one of the greatest riffs in rock music in my opinion and I think you'll love it. Dad was right about how prices to see bands was so much cheaper back in the day! I know it's showing my age but I paid £8.50($11.60) to see Pink Floyd perform The Wall, £5($6.80) each to see ZZ Top, Black Sabbath and Motorhead and £4($5.40) to see Motley Crue! Admittedly that was all many, many years ago but it was still pretty cheap!😀

Nantucket Sleighride shows off the other lead singer (Felix Pappalardi) Mountain had to offer! To hear Lesli West and Felix Pappalardi sing together you MUST listen to FOR YASGER"S FARM, sweet and hard by turn through the song, very NICE!

I was born April 1954. I grew up with the Greatest Music In History. “The Beatles” Changed everything forever. The 60s set the table for the 70s and the early 80s and we all thrived on the best bands ever making incredible music, before it all started to go Digital with forms of noise I refuse to call music. In the past when I heard a song on the radio I couldn’t wait to hear it again ASAP….. Today when I listen to the top 40 stations I usually think… I never want to hear that crap ever again. Things have changed a lot since the 60s.

I know I've heard this before because it was one of the songs that lost out in the poll that was won by Peter Frampton. To me it sounds like they're trying to do Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin. Not aware of any other songs by them but computer says they had two hits in the UK, Nantucket Sleighride (#43 in 1971), and The Road Goes Ever On (#21 in 1972). This wasn't a hit with me either, but I love the reaction. Good to see you both on top form.

This is the only Mountain song I've ever heard but I have heard it through the grapevine that they DO have more good songs. It is an awesome song that I hear regularly on the radio still. That riff is so rocking and the vocals are also outstanding. For my suggestion this time, here is one of the "big 4 of thrash" (and also the most underrated of the four), Anthax, with Madhouse (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q614ptt-1tawYJc.html). Cheers!

If you ever do a series on 0ne-Hit-Wonders, my favorite was "Lakeshore Drive" by Aliotta Haynes & Jeremiah. Great driving song with the top down. It was also known by the acronym "LSD" but I don't know the story behind that. They had other songs I liked, like "Beam Me Up Scotty" also from 1972. If you're from Illinois and you're old like me, you've grown up on this, but elsewhere, not so much. The last of them died in 2017... with a pen and 1000 pages of erased text.
