"Sounded almost like two songs in one" - which it is. It's one of Priest's earliest songs although it's on their second album. It's an amalgam between Whiskey Woman, which was written bei Priest's original vocalist Al Atkins and KK Downing, and Red Light Lady, which Rob Halford had written for his former band. At one point they turned it into a single song. And it shows. I personally like it but I also think that it's far from their best song, although the vocals are great. What I like about it is that there's a lot of details to it and you really need to pay attention to take it all in - which also means that it likely will grow on you. One thing you need to keep in mind: this is from 1975 and Priest were still finding themselves after having a few lineup changes in quick succession. They were still coming into their own.

I saw your reaction to Flight of Icarus and saw how much you both enjoyed it. This song was written 7 or 8 years earlier in the mid-70’s so the sound and style was very different to the early 80’s NWOHM style. Judas Priest’s 80’s albums like “Screaming For Vengeance” or “Defenders of the Faith” are more like Maidens “Number of the Beast” and Piece of Mind” albums. BTW, The Powerslave album is one you should check out in future reactions.

Totally agree. Like a lot of early 70's studio productions, you don't get thst fuller sound that you get from their live albums. It's the same with Thin Lizzy, always listen to the Live and Dangerous version or AC/DC's live album if You Want Blood. These bands are LIVE bands and their earlier material is so much better on their live albums. Purely because the technology wasn't there in the 70s to give it that heavy and richer, fuller sound.

Check out the live in 1983 version. Their older material is definitely different than their 80's era, which was their commercial peak and they wrote tons of catchy almost radio-friendly songs. One of my favourite albums by them is 1978's Stained Class. Again, not as radio-friendly as the 80's stuff, but a very good album full of great songs. The way they split this song into heavy, mellow, heavy parts reminds me of Iron Maiden's Rime Of The Ancient Mariner. Anyways, I'm confident that the more you listen to it, the more you'll like it...especially the live version. For a suggestion, I'm gonna go back to Blue Öyster Cult with a song that I have never, ever heard anyone react to...and it also never gets played on the radio (not one of their hits). Here is Black Blade (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fbZkZbqKyd_PhGw.html). Cheers!

Well this song was released in 1976. So it was like a blueprint for the heavier songs to come. But keeping that aside. The twin guitars, the high vocals and different tempos. Iron Maiden took this formula and did some great things with it but it’s always Judas Priest for me.

It is a great song but being one of their earlier efforts it is definitely different being slower and bluesier than what they later became known for. Dreamer Deceiver from the same album is really good but very much in this style so you might not be great fans of it. I gotta admit, when "Dad" was having trouble spitting out his dissatisfaction with this song, I felt his pain. Those of us who are devout JP fans, we probably felt it more because it only proves what we've always known and are reluctant to admit (Halford and Downing admit this, too)......our favorite JP song sounds less than ideal on "Sad Wings of Destiny." Great song, just poorly recorded... too slow, too low, sloppily mixed, the solos were uninspiring...... Don't fret. Its not a JP fan fav for a no reason at all....or out of pity. They more than clean up their production errors on "Unleashed in the East." Give it a SECOND listen...live....the way it was supposed to be. Im betting "Son" solves his "dilemma" and "Dad" flat out changes his mind! Love you guys!
