Lol, reminds me of a time in the late 80’s! I towed my 63 nova from Huntington Beach to Santa Ana, Ca. I’m in the nova, no brakes, no motor, it’s midnight and my buddy stops at a red light(no traffic), he’s got my stereo cranked up and can’t hear anything else as I’m screaming GO GO GO………..KaBLAM right into the the back of my el camino! Luckily no damage to either of MY cars…….we still laugh at that today!

Most towing I've seen in the UK they use solid tow bars so only steering is required. Usually a fold up one that fits in the van, a ratchet strap holds it straight, also means the towed vehicle is only about 4' or 5' behind.

Yup, a chunk of 3" pipe and you have a great tow bar. They can tow anything with that. and, more importantly, stop it.

With the biased weight being on the end of the towed vehicle (it was w-a-y heavier than the Taco) I believe a solid tow bar would have simply pushed the little Tacoma's rear end passed it's front end when attempting to slow/ stop.

as soon as i saw the colors on the truck i knew its was an old Bell truck, looks like it used to be what we called a digger-derrick truck, which used to dig holes and set telephone poles. it probably had a crane arm on it with a hydraulic auger and jaws to hold onto the pole, which was controlled from that seat behind the cab.👍

My buddy and I towed his old Comet from Bountiful to Sheridan Montana, with a logging chain in the 80's. Coming off Monad Hill, I lost the brakes and started to pass him going down. The look on his face as I started to pull along was priceless.Just south of Blackfoot, a wheel bearing on his 56 Chevy pickup gave out. A guy let us use a bay, but we could not get the race off. I used some emery cloth to smooth it out. About 390 miles later we made it. Talk about sketchy!

I don't know about towing with a strap, but with a chain, run the chain through a long piece of pipe and when the tow vehicle slows down the chain will keep the towed vehicle from hitting the tow vehicle from hitting the tow. But if course this wouldn't make a video of you damaging a vehicle then having to repair it

However, using a pipe would mean you're either going to bend the pipe with that much weight behind it or you're going to turn the pipe into a lance. Seems like if He had just had the transmission in third or fourth and kept the clutch in he could quickly engage it if he needed to slow. I also would never have taken my hand off that emergency brake the whole time.
@randallsmerna384
@randallsmerna384 2 жыл бұрын
And to be quite honest I would have just had it towed because: 1) Towing it that way is illegal. 2) You put people's lives at risk. Something could have gone wrong and you could have pushed him into an intersection or pulled him off the road if things went awry with the big truck. 3) Much better time management. 4) Would have avoided having to do the repair which saves time and money. I bet that repair is going to cost WAY MORE then what a tow bill would have been... It's the same concept behind "You only drive with an unsecured load once". IDK, I just don't like unnecessary damage and expense.

You know if nothing else, this video was an exact parody of the FREE America 🇺🇸 I once lived in!! I would be looking at who kmows how many fines and lawsuits for doing that here in Californy! We never gave it a second thought at one time! Thanks for the happy memories! I love you Fab Rats!

When you were walking up to the truck the first time, you could see where the brake fluid leaked down inside of the front tires.

Paul, one of the coolest old trucks I've seen was an early or mid 60's International 1800 with a huge horse box on the back. The interior was almost pristine, and the outside had one repair on the driver's side, but easily repaired. Unfortunately later that day the scrap yard crushed it. Two old truck collectors said that they would have bought the cab and frame without the 30' box. Some people just don't value history.

My dad was always a big fan of using a 10’ length of pipe and running the tow chain through it.

A neighbor had a chain break, or something, recoil caused the pipe to bounce up on the trucks hood, pipe went through the windshield.

This reminded me of when I used my 79 Bronco to pull my dad’s 5 ton wood chip truck about 20 miles on back roads. We pulled this adventure at 2300 to avoid state troopers and sheriff deputies. Ended up blowing out the front driveline and burned up the brakes on the Bronco because dad lost his brakes coming down the last little hill before the turn for the property. I basically had to stop a dead 5 ton truck with the spare tire and rack. Good times.

that was something special, so nice to get Randles first time towing on video. Should have strapped a 8ft log to the pumper like those Russian T72's, might have saved the bumper and rad.

great video it's fun towing a old school bus .. did that 20 years ago also fun when loading a car on a tow dolly and the breaks blow out half loaded on dolly and you go over the dolly .. a front end loader came over and fixed the problem ..

Lol! Years ago, 'pull started' a brakeless '49 IH grain truck with a 3/4T GMC p/u. We were able to stop everything without the carnage though. This brought back good memories of working with my uncle! Farmin'...always a workaround. 🙂 BTW we were 'on the farm'...not a State Rd.

I had a 99 Siverado that sat for 3 years before I bought it and fixed it up. It had bias 38.5 super swampers on it and it was the same way. It would shake your guts out until you got above 40 then it was smooth sailing. Tough break on the radiator though. I'm sure you'll get it fixed up though or should I say Randall will get it fixed up LoL.

A long time ago there were some abandoned railroad tracks that made for a much shorter drive into town than the highway. Much like Paul’s “square tires” the sleepers, or railroad ties would shake out your fillings at slow speed. But, once you got up to 40 or 50 it was a real smooth ride. It was even better on my dirt bike!

If nothing else, try using a piece of pipe, with a chain thru it. Wire the hooks so it can't come loose and take up all the slop you can. It keeps the cars apart and lets them turn. Or at least tell Randal to stop panic braking... Need to work on that part Randal.
