Drawing on the cover isn’t something I’ve ever done... lately I’ve been putting stickers on it, which is also something I’ve never done! Basically... I like things plain.

No mistakes, just happy accidents.

Oooh a customizable cover! Why don't more sketchbooks have these? Like dang, this is so cool! The art turned out so beautiful! But that was definitely an ordeal. So, so worth it, though!

In my experience thus far, toned paper is much more effective when using higher quality colored pencils (I use prisma), conté pastel pencils, etc. than with markers. Also oil pastels work well. But my preference is for the colored pencils. Just my input.

Its so nice to see the process that isn't planned and changes as you go! I can definately relate to changing the idea completely and not have things work out, haha. The cover turned out really nice in the end!

Can I just say, i love how you draw animals! That dog on that sketchbook is everything!

If you use toned paper again, try using a white colored pencil. It can add softer highlights without being super opaque and bold compared to the rest of the drawing. Love your illustration and how it came out 💕

That blue toned paper looks so nice! I just started getting into toned gray and tan paper and I love it so much now!

I really like this picture! Toned paper is so cool! But it definitely takes getting used to. Art Ala Carte has a character design video series where she uses toned paper. I think the thing that really helps her get good contrast is using copics as a base and then coloured pencils overtop. :)

I'm pretty sure you'll never read this, but you are one of my biggest inspirations. I love your chanel and your art and it was so fun seeing you evolve as a youtuber and artist. Whenever I start a new page on my sketchbook it always feels intimidating let alone the front cover #artist_struggles

I like the way this came out, and I am making sketchbooks complete by hand and decorating all the covers for a craft fair to sell. I think I will use this theme for a design of one. Depending on how it goes maybe I'll do more. Excellent job!

It’s been and done. Now all you can do is two things, either critique it endlessly or step back and look at it as a whole, seeing the flaws but not letting them define that price of art. Don’t worry about it, it’s a beautiful piece.

I absolutely love this! The green tones just (IMO) soften the colors and make the picture look like it has texture. I love it and I'm not all the way thru the post.

I've been painting for so many years, and in/with so many different mediums that I keep forgetting what comes natural now. Like the incident with the ruler. I would never have done that mistake today, and it's so obvious that it's a bad idea. But then I remember that I made that mistake some odd years ago, and it makes me appreciate how far I've come, and all the mistakes I've made and learned from, that now resides in the back of my mind. Great vid!

I hold my pencil like that too! But only when I'm drawing, when I write I hold it on my middle finger. My mom was an art teacher when I was younger and it drove her nuts when I would draft clutching my pencil like that 😅 it's kind of reassuring that someone talented like you holds it the same way

Beautiful cover! Colored pencil might have worked better on the grey paper. I've done quite a few drawings on tone paper like that and they've come out quite nice. Still it's a beautiful cover. One of my favorite artists is Mucha and I think you did him proud.

With my sketchbook, I just tapped paper over the cover, so I could draw on it. This would be the perfect sketchbook for me.

I actually really enjoy how this ended up coming out in the end. It's really pretty, and I would love to do something like this on one of my sketchbooks at some point.

Usually when I mess it up I get frustrated and feel like a failor, and only finish it because it needs to be done, but your optimism and will to keep on trying, are inspiring. I feel like this is how I work with each piece is finding ways to counteract the mistakes- it takes a lot of gut to keep going and not throw away and start over. Great Job!!

I am excited to see the drawings that go into this sketch book! Sketch books are pretty personal I know as well being an artist as well I have to really love a drawing to show it to anyone lol but I appreciate that you share yours with us and that you just draw what you want and what you love even if it doesn't turn out the way you wanted that's something I need to learn myself.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who starts out with a great idea and then flounders a bit, but I usually give up whereas you pulled through and turned it into something beautiful! The colours make it look like the inside of a green house. I recently designed my black cover sketch book by using a white pen and making wavey shapes and to give a little bit of definition I added aome gold dotted around it

I think it would've been really cool if she went through the cover either during or afterwards so that the cover could kind of be a recap of what happened that year. For example, if she really liked drawing animals at the beginning of the year then she could draw her favorite animal to draw on the cover and then keep doodling in the sketchbook and realize that she had a hard time with feet or hands or shoes or something and then kind of show that progression of what she had a hard time with during that year or what she really liked drawing during that year. Just an idea, I really like the illustration she made on the cover.

At the art school I went to we got personal sketch books from our teachers that we could draw whatever we wanted in them together with all the art assignment pieces that they gave us. ex. drawing of your bed with extra focus on all of the folds on the blanket for example. The book was about the size of an A5 paper and they had this plastic folder at the front in which you could put in a paper and essentially make your own cover for your sketchbook with the added bonus that you could make a new cover any time you wanted if you was no longer happy with it or just wanted some change. Sadly I haven't found any sketchbooks like that after I was done at that art school but I'm still looking for something similar. Eitherway Love what you did with the cover I think you did a stellar job with it. :')

A good tip you get from me when it comes to wanting a contrast to paper that you designed on sketchbook 18, use lighter color as the base primer then choose the color you want, this kind of paper has always been hard to draw on

I have not taken the time to get a white gel pen yet and I always use cheap dollar store pen white out for my art and it’s just the same and amazing and I’m so glad she also uses this technique

Yes, it lightens up because the paper is too thick. You can still use alcohol-based markers on thick paper but they will dry out quickly if you do it often, there are actually special paper made for alcohol-based markers like promarkers and copic which is really thin and has a special material on the backside so that it doesn't bleed through. Really pretty drawing!!
