Look like new versions of cores and fpga firmware can work with win 95 and win 98 very fast and without any issues! Awesome work!

Your videos are consistently excellent! Thank you for saying up front that performance leaves... something to be desired. I kept watching out of academic interest and enjoyed it in a nerdly way. I'm pretty amazed that MiSTer can even do this, and TBH I don't think it's any harder to get Win95 working on this platform than whatever retail PC clone one might have had back in the day. Hell, it's no doubt easier because there's such good information online that didn't exist in the mid-90s. I don't think I'll try it myself.

If you could pass off FPU and GPU to the ARM side of the DE10-Nano you could perhaps get pretty impressive results up to Windows XP.

Now the last experiment to go with for this core... does windows 98 starts on the A0486 core? Did some people manage to make it boot, run games? It's an awesome tutorial by the way! Thanks :)

I believe Windows 98 does run from some research I did a while back. I'll be doing some testing with it soon and see what kind of video I can create out of it.

2:45 probably better leaving OPL2 selected for audio, From what i've heard from LGR testing out a adlib gold sound card OPL3 was really only good with a very few selected games made for it and OPL2 was the more widely supported, and OPL3 fails alot of the time with it's backward compatibilty support.

I think for small form factor extreme small form factor PCs running windows 9x. You better off making something like the WeeCee for such use. Next gen FPGA is going kill it though even if all we get is a voodoo card added in with the 486 being brought up a little in speed.

now the Mister FPGA need a GPU module to emulate a 3DFX video card and play Need For Speed II SE. did you try to run some old emulators like Callus 95, Nebula or Rain for fun purpose ?

From what I read, 3DFx support is most likely not possible. The AO4086 core uses up most of the FPGA space so there most likely wont be enough space left over for 3Dfx. Man, the 3Dfx chip totally blew me away when I first installed it on my PC. I do want to create another video testing out other software to see if I can find something that works really well. I'll check out those classics emus. You brought back memories when you named them! :)

So it actually might be possible, but it means no FPU ever. And a shrinkage of the core by a good bit, which is absolutely possible since it already has been done. I think fpus are more interesting than GPU in this case since most games had a software renderer through the 90s and with the cache hack in combination to the Fpus it would make a lot of games fully playable into the windows 98 era. Another breakthrough could be in the hybrid emulation which could solve the size problem of the FPGA by offloading the CPU on the arm chip while sound and dedicated hardware would run on the FPGA. For now it's only at the proof of concept stage with the Minimig and it's very unstable, but if it pans out, it could make, full Ao486, Pentium I and II, even N64 possible on the Mister and so many more... That's the dream anyway 😂

I meant the GPU module could be an hardware additional expansion to plug on the Mister FPGA. not an FPGA reprogrammed softcore. a GPU can emulate any 3D video cards like 3DFX or PowerVR2 through API mapping very efficientely. and some filters can now reproduce their old unperfect rendering like ParaLLEl RDP for the N64.

Not enough space on the FPGA to pull off that job, but PCs are a different beast anyway where timings are not an issue, because the pcs ran so differently anyway in many configurations. I would recommend to go for an emulator when it comes to Windows games, pcem for instance might be your friend that one can even emulate old 3dfx cards! At one point around the time pc gpus came out fpga emulation does not make sense anymore, the same goes for consoles from a certain point onwards.

Without 3D acceleration support, and a decent CPU, I don't see the point. Back in the 90s, I had a 486 DX100, and it didn't run Win95 that well, and that CPU had an FPU, and I had a decent GFX card from Matrox. It wasn't until I got a Pentium 75, that Win95 really shone, if Win95 was capable of shining, lol.

AO486 is best used with DOS and games that are meant mid range 486 PC's. No need for 3D acceleration with those games.

@@LusRetroSource He didn't say that the Matrox card was a 3d Accelerator. Could have been a 2D card.
