We play arcade games with a MISTer FPGA! Fun was had by all. Taylor got a haircut and Amy is good at BurgerTime.

I was actually hoping that you did a review of the MiSTer. I got mine about a year ago and I think it's an amazing toy. Wait until you start up a 486SX, or hook up a real C64 disk drive to it! (with the proper adaptor cable) Since it's replicated hardware. you can connect it to original peripherals, which you typically can't do with a software emulator. As another enthousiast, here's what I think you should do or look at: 1. Connect it to the network and run the update_all script (I had to manually add it on mine, maybe it comes pre-installed now). 2. Start collecting disk and cartridge images for the different computers and consoles. 3. If you have a NAS, get the cifs_mount script and configure it. You can then easily drop the image files in a shared folder right from your PC. 4. Play with the display options to get the perfect retro (CRT) look. It makes a big difference. Modern screens are just too perfect. I also find that older games play better with a proper joystick instead of a controller. Another interesting thing to know is that you can get an arcade cabinet compatible adapter for the MiSTer (It's called a Jamma board or something like that). This allows you to run any available arcade game in a "blank" cabinet. You would need only one, which would solve the space problem you mentionned in the video.

Taylor, your new haircut looks great. As for the MiSTer, what an amazing gift. The prices have gone through the roof on them. Sadly I missed out getting a MiSTer when the prices were much better. I do now own a Color Computer 3 so there's that 🙂

The MISTer system strikes me as a shapeshifter (pop-culture sci-fi reference goes here), capable of replicating any CPU/mainboard that's hit the mass market in the last half-century.

Love the new 'do! I have heard lots of good stories about the MiSTer from people on the Amigos Discord, as well as some people who have used the free Coco 1/2 core. There is a free Coco 3 core that is still a Work in Progress, and Roger Taylor (who also did the Matchbox Coco, and lot of utilities and games in the 1990's and 2000's) has a Patreon supported Coco 3 core that is much more robust. It's cool that the MiSTer is a "jack of all trades" mimicking many different machines in hardware, like MAME does in software. You can use it to "practice" learning all the machines on your shopping list before you get the actual hardware... lol.

I am a huge fan of your channel. I am also a huge fan of MiSTer FPGA. So, I am absolutely thrilled to see you ladies getting in to it. (I also love Burger Time, so that's a nice bonus) I know that MiSTer can replicate most (if not all) of the retro computers you have featured on your channel. But, I have done almost nothing with that side of it so I can't speak to how well MiSTer does with those. However, I spend quite a bit of time playing retro consoles. In my opinion, MiSTer exponentially blows away emulation. And, in many cases, even the original hardware. The lag is nearly non-existent, and it adds features that retro tech didn't offer, like save states and recently 480p for the Playstation. You asked an enthusiast where you should start. Having a USB keyboard on hand would be helpful, at least at the beginning. The dev community is quite active so I'd recommend updating no less than once a week. When you're in the menu, hit the menu button again, go to "scripts", and hopefully friend of the channel Scott put the "update all" script on there. Then, whenever you get a controller, you should map it. Bring up the menu in each core, drill for the remap button option, then put the choices (like insert coin :) ) where you're comfortable. I can talk MiSTer all day. Feel free to hit me up with more questions.

Another thing I love about MiSTer is it reminds me of one of the few times in my life where I got really lucky financially. I got in Christmas of '19, right before the world went stupid with...ahem, "chip shortages". I built my entire MiSTer setup for >$200. The DE10 Nano board by itself seems to go for more than that these days.

I was going to give some tips but I see Bret has pretty much written everything I would have. Oddly, I also bought my first MiSTer FPGA at the tail end of 2019 and got that one for a reasonable price. The jist is, the menu hotkey as defined on that controller is Select+Start but you can re-map it if desired... then learn how to navigate the menu... and configure your controller buttons. Each core has its own settings, so you'll be doing a lot of that until you get all of the ones done that you care about... and make sure to "Save settings..." each time after done, or it's like you didn't do it. :) Enjoy!

@@lsdowdle Another piece of advice is to get a really nice controller. Those look like Logitech 310s. Nothing wrong with those. There's no right answer. I use the Gulikit King Kong 2 Pro controller. It's nice. It doesn't check all of my boxes as to what I'm looking for in a controller, but no controller I've seen thus far has.

I still have a tough time grasping the concept of an FPGA emulating a videogame, as opposed to an RPi with emulation SW on it. Is it emulating at component level (like a PLC or something)? I love yal's videos BTW!
@MastaTabs
@MastaTabs Жыл бұрын
It's not emulation as with an emulator that runs on a pc. It's rather a reimplementation of the actual hardware. Lets view an FPGA as a collection of more or less generic digital electronic components and you can configure those and route wires between them. The configuration is loaded again on every power on.

If you order directly from terasic it will generally show up within a couple weeks. Even if the stock notice on their site says backorder, it's generally referring to larger quantity orders. Single customers are still getting theirs in a decent timeframe if they place an order directly with them.
