Mix Powder is in essence a mild curry powder used in most BIR (British Indian Restaurant/Takeaway) establishments to form the basis of the spicing, along with the base gravy.
There are many different recipes, each with a slightly different ratio of spices.
It mostly consists of Turmeric, Cumin, Coriander, Mild Madras Curry Powder, sometimes Paprika, and occasionally a tiny bit of Chilli powder and Garam Masala.
Additional spices (with other ingredients such as ginger garlic paste, methi, tomato paste etc) are then added when cooking, depending on the curry, (e.g. Chilli Powder, Garam Masala, Cumin seeds, Fennel seeds and so on), to tailor that particular dish.
I have tried many combinations, and have settled for this Mix Powder recipe. It's based very closely on that of a professional chef with many years BIR experience. I chose it because I feel it has the right balance of spicing to work in synergy with my Base Gravy recipe (see Notes).

I follow both you and Dan (and of course the great Pat Chapman). I've been using Dan's blend since I begun BIR, but I like the look of this based on the madras powder addition, and a change is as good as a rest. Thanks for the video and recipe my friend.

Just made this, but added 0.5 TSP of commercial (Natco) garam masala. Gut instinct was to add 1 TSP, as the ratio seems very low. I've tried a fair few mix powders, and I usually reduce the amount of cumin and turmeric a bit, I think too much of these spices can be overpowering. I've used the recommended amounts this time though. Hoping for good results.

Awesome. I've had good results from toasting the whole seeds in a hot pan before grinding. Brings out the essential oils apparently.

Always good to see things in action. The problem for me is that a lot of recipes, like yours, add some pre mixed spices. In this case Curry Powder and Garam Masala. There's plenty of different Curry Powder mixes and of course everyone has their own Garam Masala. It puts two unknowns into an other wise exact recipe. Even if you name the brands, they may not be available in other countries.

You say add garam masala. But isn't the mix powder that you are making garam masala?

I find it odd you go through all the effort to make your curries from scratch (a fine job too) but you use premade curry powder as part of your mix. Any particular reason you do use pre mixed madras powder and not individual spices? or is it just for ease?

Hi misty .great video..can I use already ground cumin and coriander..or is there any specific reason for using the seeds then grinding down
