He never really got laughs he deserved

In all fairness his delivery is kind of unorthodox. Easy to have a delayed reaction on some of the punch lines just because of his monotoned delivery. Once the audience listened to him for a couple minutes they started to adapt to it. Not a bad crowd overall.

Always nice to see a new Mitch fan all these years later. The guy was absolutely brilliant.

You missed out on a great comic.. he was about to get his own show when he passed. Well, that's what I read. I loved mitch. Cried when I found out he passed away.. he was in a class of his own.

You HAVE been missing this guy! It's all good, though, because you have the man's entire comedic history at your fingertips. (Thanks, internet!) He's so great. His jokes were simplistic bordering on dad joke material, but he made it SO much better than that. I hope you've found some more great material and loved it!

The odd delivery that came to define his later performances was not a result of being high all the time. It was an affectation; yes, Mitch was a drug user in real life, but onstage the idea was to play an exaggerated version of a stoner and exploit the rhythm of that character's delivery to enhance the jokes. Mitch sat down, wrote jokes, and worked out the best phrasing and timing of the punchlines according to how the stoner character spoke. He would step off the stage and talk more or less like a regular person from Minnesota. Have you ever noticed how in later performances Mitch seems to almost have a southern accent when he pronounces certain words? That's because he's working the character. The real Mitch Hedberg had no southern accent. All that said, yes, there are some performances online from 2004/2005 where he is clearly losing his way (and the audience) and not sober, but that is something different.

Well said, comedy is such an art/ skill. Ive spent the last several years getting deep into comedy, and the range of styles may vary, but it seems a "master" comedian is far more than someone on stage telling jokes. I think many are highly intelligent whether they come across as it or not, highly observant and a sort of cultural narrator. Mix that with their personal lives and issues, a crazy personality or persona and bam, we have a comedian.

I knew Mitch in the early 90's...he drank moderately and smoked some pot, but no hard drugs. He was very kind. He LOVED Chinese food :)

It wasn't drugs-he suffered from stage fright. As he got more confident with his material (and also got into opiates), it subsided. RIP, Mitch, you were one of the best.

Lee Hearts One thing that is consistent though, is that he seemed to leave the audience behind. They just didn't seem to get the jokes or his perspective until mid-performance. Weird. I find it difficult to comprehend why people are that slow on the up-take. It reminds me of something Roger Waters said about the storyline of "The Wall". He claimed many people just didn't "get it". My daughter, who was in her late teens at the time, watched "The Wall" movie, and understood it as good if not better than I did. Is she just smart or perceptive? In any case, both of my daughters "get jokes" of any style. They don't like Bill Maher like I do though. Too much of a male perspective, I think. Bill Burr is in the same category. Then again, I'm not very fond of very many female comedians. Sarah Silverman I just adore though. They put one of her concerts on NetFlix once and it didn't stay up there for more than 3 days. Then it disappeared. I think someone complained about the content (probably some religious nut bitched about it).

Because they are intelligent people (although I think I'll have to keep my wife out of it, for reasons I won't get into here). Part of the reason we're intelligent is because we don't post fuckin' sarcastic comments on KZfaq like you do, for starters. Secondly, we're Canadians, eh? According to statistics, we're one of the most educated people around, 60% have at least graduated college. Unlike the U.S., where education is abysmally inconsistent throughout the country, we have a wider frame of reference to draw from. When it comes to comedy, some of the best comedians come from Canada. I won't rattle off a list of names here because if you're even a bit knowledgeable about (or ah-boot) comedy, you'll know who I'm talking about. Many people who work behind the scenes in comedy come from Canada. Of course, you probably think it's American or something, but once in a while, read an article or a book. You'll be surprised what you'll learn if you do that. And thirdly, we're socially aware individuals. If you bothered to watch this video, you'll see that most of Mitch's performances begin with the audience sitting there, not laughing. Not because the jokes aren't funny... they're too slow to "get it". That doesn't mean they're necessarily dumb. Just slow on the uptake. They were probably expecting one thing, and they got something else entirely. That's how trained monkeys react to something new and different. These are the same people that watch daytime TV shows like Maury Povich or Jerry Springer and believe they're seeing a "new" show. So, that's why I can claim my family and I are a few IQ's higher than half of that audience Hedberg had to perform to in this video. Thank you for asking...

Disagree - he ended up using a lot of these jokes later. His joke writing suffered terribly later - check out his live in San Francisco 90 minute set on here (think it was 04?) It's hard to listen to.

I think the delivery was more of a practiced thing later, & the drugs were just to stay "up". Although many of the jokes were about drug use, I don't think his performance depended on it as much as, say, Robin Williams' did.

He was great though and his sense of humor holds up into the present. I agree, I hope his family is holding up and somehow finds comfort in the fact that he was a legend. R.I.P.
