In this video, we follow the last hours in the life of Catherine Eddowes, who is generally believed to have been the fourth victim of Jack the Ripper.
We follow her from the evening before her murder when she was arrested for being drunk on Aldgate High Street.
We visit Bishopsgate Police Station, to where she was taken and put in a cell to sleep off the effects of her excesses.
We then move to the early hours of the 30th of September 1888 to learn of the witnesses who may have seen her in the company of her murderer, before venturing into Mitre Square to cover the awful events that surrounded her murder and the finding of her body by Police Constable Edward Watkins.
The video ends with a statement made by one of the witnesses that really does sum up just how elusive Jack the Ripper was in escaping from the scenes of his crimes.

Great video! I was wondering if you have ever come across the account given by a woman on the morning of Catherine's murder, about a man she witnessed washing his hands in a public fountain(horse trough) and giving her a mean look. There was a lot going on nearby in the minutes following her murder. It would make a great video! Thanks again!

Great question! However, I seriously doubt there’d be anything useful left of the historical record to add meaningfully to the story.

The whole thing is a bit odd whichever way you look at it. Even allowing for collective deceit on the part of Nightwatchman George Morris, PC Watkins and PC Harvey we have a witness who observes a couple talking quietly under the gas lamp at about 1:30 to 1:35 am where Church passage widens out into Mitre Square. For that to make any sense I would say the woman (whoever she was) may have taken up position under the lamp as a not too subtle hint as to what services she might have been offering. Those exiting from the Imperial club may have been her target audience. If the ripper entered Mitre Square the same way he likely exited then that means he approached her from Mitre Street on the pretext of walking up Church Passage when she stops him by putting a hand on his shoulder. According to PC Watkins timings he had passed by barely a minute or two earlier which kind of implies the ripper followed him into the Square. PC Watkins does not mention anybody following him or anybody under the gas lamp. If she retreated further back down Church passage as she heard PC Watkins round the corner from Mitre Street into the Square that might be why he didn't see anyone. At best that gives the ripper 13-14 minutes to do everything. I'm going to discard PC Harvey for a single reason. If you have ever stood under a light source be it a lamp or your own house lighting and looked out into the dark your vision is restricted. Everybody can see you but you can't necessarily see them. If PC Harvey did go all the way down Church Passage (and I have my doubts) he may not have seen anything for that very reason. For all this to hang together we rely principally on PC Watkins version of events and for that matter the stories PC Harvey and George Morris also give. I think Morris is unreliable. The same person who claimed to be in the counting room (no windows and beyond earshot) also claimed to also be able to hear the footsteps of policemen every fifteen minutes. He is contradicting himself. Both statements can't be 100% true. I think what we have is a collection of small lies which hindered the investigation and do so till this day.

For me this shows that the ripper was just an opportunist and had no medical knowledge or any other reason than to just mutilate. He was just an opportunist . Poor Catherine was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Just like all the others. Interesting snippet, Kearley and Tongue also had a warehouse at the first murder site in Bucks row.

I agree. Despite all that has been written about the murders in the last 135 years, it is this spot which despite the confused timings and the witnesses tells us more about the Ripper than any other site. But it all hangs around the timings rather than witness evidence. This spot was deliberately chosen and was no fluke. If we could extract more one hard fact from this site then I think the others murders would be more easy to understand. There remains I think evidence out there even after all this time which could still shed light on what actually happened that night in the square. Good luck to those who find that evidence.

@@davekeating. The murderer could quite well have watched it for weeks or certainly nights to get the police beat timings worked out. It was a very dark square at the time and to hide in the shadows wouldn't have been a problem. We're the witnesses just prior to the killing reliable or did Catherine chance her arm by taking a short cut through mitre square and paid the price for it!? We'll probably never ever know
@88mphDrBrown
@88mphDrBrown Жыл бұрын
Probably the juxtaposition between how busy the square was and how heinous the crime was. It's really quite remarkable that there were multiple police and random passers-by so close to a murder with extended mutilation. It also simultaneously pushes the profile to 2 polar opposites of the spectrum. Either he was so out of control that he took a huge risk and got lucky, or he was so calculating that he knew the police patrols down to the minute. If the Stride murder is canonical, I think it points much more to the former.

The thing that always struck me is that Lawende and Schwartz's descriptions match so closely. They gave the same age, height, hair, mustache, general body, and general facial structure descriptions. We wouldn't as he killed again so they would know it wasn't him as he'd be in custody when Mary Kelly was murdered, the next victim after Catherine. That and the fact that she was seen with a man before she was murdered just a few minutes before. Also if they didn't find a knife on the man who ran away in a panic, then they would search for it and not find it. When you put the three things together it would point to him being innocent. Plus no blood on the man would also point to his innocence.

Great video as usual, Richard. I was hoping that you could clear something up for me if you would be kind enough to do so? Well, when Catherine Eddows was released from the police station after getting locked up for being drunk, she asked what time it was, to which the police man replied "too late for you to get anything else to drink" Well, in your tv documentary "Unmaskkng the ripper" Jenny Phillips said that drink was available 24hrs a day. I'm just wondering which was true? Thanks.

All those mutilations in 9 minutes , and in the dark? I think that brings constable Watkins timeline into question. In my opinion the body speaks for itself. She was mutilated on the spot. The killer did take some time, Nixing the eyelids ,cutting of the nose ,carving V's in her face. That's someone that took at least 15min , Then on top of it when constable Watkins found her, he didn't find a lot of blood . Reason being it had soaked into her coat.. I truly believe constable Watkins skipped Mitre Square so he could hit the clock on time.. Great Video Richard.. I miss the spooky victorian music...

Great video again thank you.intersted on your thoughts regarding the decription..age 30,5"9 fair complection fair moustache red neckerchief cloth cap with peak appearance of sailor. Published in the times on oct 2 but doesnt mention lawende. Yet at the inquest 11 oct lawende says ' the man was taller than the woman he wore a cloth cap with peak" at this point city police solicitor henry crawford says " unless the jury wish it i have special reason why no FURTHER description shall be given out now". We should also remember that lawende says he wouldnt recognise the man again. So why would crawford supress something that was already made public? Strange to say the least.
@andy5xcool
@andy5xcool Жыл бұрын
I believe why the "no further description" was given is for the same reason the graffito was washed off the wall in Goulston Street. Lewande probably had a more accurate description of the man, perhaps telling police before the inquest that the guy appeared to be a foreign immigrant (of the Jewish faith). At the time anti-semitism was building up after each murder, as the locals believed the culprit to be a jew and so to placate this they wanted to suppress the "FURTHER" details from being reported to the public.

@@andy5xcool yeah maybe andy,good points, at the inquest crawford says ' no further description' ..apart from age height fair complection fair mustache,general appearance, its hard to think of what further details he was supressing.the details in the times 2nd oct sound more like a gentile than a jewish man imo. If the times description was from lawende it seems he got a decent look at the man seen with eddowes otherwise he wouldnt have mentioned a fair complection and fair moustache yet lawende goes on to say he wouldnt recognise him again.anyway i still think it all sounds a bit iffy.
@andy5xcool
@andy5xcool Жыл бұрын
@@leslierock5005 He may have been advised to say that he wouldn't "recognise the man again" by the police, so that he wouldn't be hounded and harassed by the press after the inquest (to me this suggests maybe the police needed him in assistance immediately after the inquest, perhaps to patrol the streets with them to see if Lawende could spot the killer). As we know there was a 'Jewish witness' later used to identify a suspect but who then refused to testify against the suspect because the suspect was a Jew. Anderson said this in his memoirs (I'm paraphrasing) "The only witness to ever get a real good look at the suspect refused to testify as suspect was a Jew (like the witness), which would have meant the certain death of a fellow Jew which was against his faith".
@andy5xcool
@andy5xcool Жыл бұрын
Admittedly people have said the witness was Schwarz because he had just arrived in the country. He would have adhered to the Jewish morales of old, whereas Lawende who had lived in London longer and so integrated into the society more, would be less likely to hold such a firm religious stance.

@@leslierock5005 I'm going from memory, but I read somewhere the suspect was said to be only about 3 inches taller than Eddowes, meaning he would have been far shorter than the report that was published in The Times, at about 5'3" tall, as I believe Eddowes was only 5'.

There is some confusion about a City Police man having seen the Ripper at Mitre Square and this is who is supposedly visited at the Brighton Police Convalescent Home. Sadly, he's never identified (if he existed) and some even believe he is being confused with the policeman at Swallow Gardens when Frances Coles is murdered (though even he only heard footsteps). I sometimes wonder if the police covered it up to spare the officer an inevitable press witch-hunt.
