Within 24 hours of her body being found in Dutfield's Yard, off Berner Street the victim had been identified as Elizabeth Stride, generally known in the district as "London Liz Stride."
However, a positive identification was delayed by several weeks owing to the emergence of a mysterious lady by the name of Mary Malcolm, who, contrary to what everyone else was saying, insisted that the Berner Street victim was, in fact, her sister Elizabeth Watts.
Furthermore, she claimed, at more or less the exact moment when the murder had been taking place, the spirit of her sister had come to her bedside to kiss her goodbye.
This "supernatural element", as The East London Advertiser termed it caused a sensation, and several newspapers began to speculate on the likelihood of the victim's spirit having visited her sister on the morning of the murder.
However, the supernatural aside, Mary Malcolm was to provide a great deal of mystery in her own right, because, far from having been murdered in Berner Street, her sister, now known as Elizabeth Stokes, turned out to be alive and well and living in Tottenham
In this video we tell the story of Mary Malcolm and ponder her possible motivation for having wanting to mislead the inquest into Elizabeth Stride's death by claiming that she was Elizabeth Watts.
