Stan shops at my local Mitre10, but I was too star struck to talk to him when I saw him there... 😅Instead, I told his wife/partner what an absolute legend he was! I've already done a couple of projects after watching his videos, I've learned new ways to use some of my tools, and I know this one is going to be a godsend on my retaining wall project. Love your work!

@timaustin917
@timaustin917 4 жыл бұрын
No, they are structural
@SecAware
@SecAware 9 ай бұрын
The soil presses the boards into the posts, which are firmly fixed in the ground. If the boards are on the front, the soil will eventually push them off the posts ... but for appearances, you can always add another (non-structural) layer on the front, either thinner boards or exterior-grade plywood, forming a cavity wall. @@timaustin917

I would not place drainage coil on 100mm of Scoria rather lay the coil on the clay with a 1 percent fall then Scoria or drainage metal on top, that way the drainage will actually carry the water away through the coil.

yup, also I would have used some geo fabric and being picky weathered the back of the wall swell
@citticat2
@citticat2 4 жыл бұрын
@@Turbocorksta I heard not to use geo fabric because the water and mud collect behind the wall, cause pressure, and causes the wall to bow.

I am wondering the post is fixed using cement, next time when you replace the post, how do you pull the post out?
@mitre10nz
@mitre10nz Жыл бұрын
Hi There, you can pry it out. You can do this with a long lever or a car jack. In either case, nail some wood to the post first to pry against and then get to work. Pry until the post releases from the concrete and comes all the way out. ^Ryan

It looks nice and all that, but the lumber will rot where it meets the soil. An old neighbor with a big, beautifull garden told me that. I would have used brackets in the concrete with solid screws or bolts so that I could remove the post and put in new ones when they start to rot. The lumber will not rot under ground, it will not rot above ground, but it will rot in the transition between the soil and 'the air'. Eventually it will also rot both under ground and above ground, but that will take much longer time. To protect the concrete you could also have poured it into plastic sewage pipes or something similar with the right dimension.
