One of three flying examples left in the world, this rebuilt Mitsubishi A6M3 Model 22 Zero WWII Japanese fighter on display at the July 2011 Experimental Aircraft Association's (EAA) AirVenture air and trade show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. This aircraft is owned and operated by the Commemorative Air Force's (CAF) Southern California Wing, based at Camarillo.

Kaze Tachinu...very glad to see one of these planes flying in peacetime, preserved as living history. I think Horikoshi Jiro is happy wherever he is that this plane is in working order.

Thank you cherish her​​. In Japan now, people who know the value of it is small. If you put the Zero fighter in Japan. nobody without adjustment, it will not fly. If you've owned, she's happy.

Our first visited the Babo airstrip in 1974 I remember very clearly this Zero it was the only one that was fully intact. I remember it was in a horseshoe type bunker with the wheels down jacked up on world war 44 gallon. Are my even have a photo of it somewhere. At that time I counted about 30 or 40 aircraft many of them were Zeros. I managed to find two propellers in the long grass about 200 mi to the side of the runway.. there was a body of an old Better Bomber down the end of the I believe this was also taken back to America.. although unsure I believe the propellers are still in Australia could be from the Betty Bomber.. I'm really glad these aircraft we're taking back to a country where they could restored.

Got to take a tour this morning of the museum with my son and it was a blast. Amazing airplanes there. To see a genuine zero that is flight capable, truly awesome. Thank you Camarillo Air museum

This is the plane I constructed the canopy, exhaust, air intake duct, and cooling louvers for. I also jigged the fore and aft sections for the fuselage mating process. This was done in Mojave in 1999-2000. Peter Firkins was the lead man on this project. A very humble man with big smarts. Thanks to Bruce Lockwood and Chris Woods for the opportunity to be a part of this unique project.

I was standing on the elevated deck of a beach house in Ventura when this exact plane flew by me, not high over the water, extremely close and at slow speed. So close and so slowly the pilot and I locked eyes for a moment as he passed by. I then had the revelation what it must have been like to be an oncoming WW2 American fighter pilot to pass by one of these things. Lucky.

Pretty sure the gun switch in our A6M3-32 throttle selected the 20mm cannons or the 7.7 type 97 cockpit machine guns. Maybe that was a field modification to select all guns, with the throttle switch, for that plane? Still love the video and the information. Love seeing it fly!

If you examine the trim tabs such as the one on the rudder, you can tell that this Reisen is an early production aircraft of the A6M3 type 22 series.

Beau48ful historic aircraft. I have read accounts of bold P38 pilots, namely Tommy McQuire(38 kills), who were so good at manipulating the two engines on 38 that they could maneuver low & slow with Zeros. However pushing the envelope is dangerous, & McQuire went into a spin at low altitude trying to stay with a Zero , couldn't recover, died in the ensuing crash. Some pilots seem to have a talent for getting the most from their aircraft, think McQuire, Bong, Boyington, Gabreski, Johnson, Anderson,Sakai, Hartman, etc., etc.

i have no idea my friend,just a syfy type thought, similar airframe just with a jet engine, i dont know much about aircarf parts, im a scale moddler,and i only know certain aircraft in great detail dependin if im intrseted in it, the a6m is one of my fave ww2 fighters,i know about the aircraft,just just not the components and parts

They should of put some kind of basic firewall behind the pilots seat, to give him some brief time to bail if the tanks were hit and caught fire.

Prescious Cheeks If the tanks were hit (they are situated in the wing roots) its fair to say the pilot was already dead. In the offset chance that he wasnt dead (mostly the case, we are talking .50 cal here), or critically injured, the flames usually dont spread THAT fast (look at guncam footage of zero`s getting shot down) and in those cases the pilots usually did get out.

In the A6M3-32 Zero one fuel tank was in the cockpit with the pilot. From the front you go, engine, engine oil tank, engine fire wall, (very thin) inside cockpit fuel tank, then the ammo storage for the 7.7mm type 97's, then pilots instruments panel then pilot. That cockpit fuel tank is just inches in front of the pilots toes. Just hit his 7.7 ammo or the fuel tank, with a 50 cal or so and instant fire ball for the pilot.

I would be very afraid to fly a Zero in combat without the self-sealing fuel tanks. I read that some of the Zeros had no backseat armor!

+Gillus Magnus For the Zero i can tell that they were unsurpassed in maneuverability in their time. Russian Yak was nothing special for zero in term of maneuverability.

No, it would be something like an R1820-only one Zero flies with a Sakae-its coded 61-120 and flies out of Chino California (very rarely!)

3:27 Well yeah, it was a low speed, low alt maneuvering contest from the sounds of it. That's really the only place the Zero could beat the Corsair though.

When the Pilots loaded the machine guns On The Japanese zero How did they get the Bullets to feed from the left side of the right machine gun And from the right side of the left machine gun I scene a video of a Japanese pilot loading the ammunition on board And he was putting in the ammunition with one hand And he had his arm in a hole down below the gun Bay???????

The bearcat was designed specifically to be able to fight the zeros at any speed and altitudes. Good plane just didn't make into the fight of ww2.

Yes, In many cases with WW2 aircraft, the mg's were used more as a guide for the cannons. Due to the all metal configuration of WW2 fighters, .30 cal mg's were almost useless.

Richardsen The British .303 rounds were almost useless against 109's, that's why the first models of the Spitfire and Hurricane had 8+ MG's to compensate for the lack of punching power.

Combat Wombat Not THAT useless. Pretty much the whole Battle of Britain was fought with the RAF equipped only with .303 machineguns. While certainly no MG FF/M, the .303s could shred the control surfaces or cause fires with incendiary rounds. If they were that ineffective, the Luftwaffe would not have lost more than 1,500 aircraft over a 15 weeks period (a good number of them bombers, tougher targets than regular fighters). Even the Luftwaffe operated a sizable number of Bf 109 E-1s, armed with only 4 7,92 mm MG 17 machineguns. Of course, I would rather have 20 mm cannons instead of only rifle caliber machineguns, but the little buggers were dangerous nonetheless.

+Richardsen Yeah, but it took a lot of .303's machine guns firing at the same time to shoot down an aircraft, wich took space on an aircraft, and increased the weight, and the chances to have a weapon malfunction... The RAF had done tests during ww2: it took an average of 500 to 1000 hits to a target to bring it down, while it took an average of only 3 to 4 hits with a 20mm cannons... so yeah, .303 were, well a good choice of ammunitions in the early 30's, but by the time of battle of Britain, even the pilots agreed that it was obsolete.

don't know if this zero has a sakae, but as far as I know only 1 of the 3 zeroes in flyable condition has it's original engine. needless I would do just about anything to fly one of them just once.

Two planes have the Pratt & Whitney R-1830. The only Sakae is in the Planes of Fame museum in Chino CA.

Santa Six Must be the Pratt & Whitney then; the guy says that it has a "1250 HP". The Nakajima Sakae in the A6M3 made some 1100 hp.

i think they should remake the planes but with jet engines...in a then and now comparison...so simalar aircraft but no propeler ..although most beuty and elegance will be lost compared to the original (if theyy did so)

That IS funny. Decent show. I must insist that you watch "The Wind Rises" now. That was the last movie directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Lat year in fact. But it was about the guy who designed the Zero fighter...and happily, also an Anime!

As they video says, it was an origianl Zero wreck which was rebuilt, so it's half and half.

Super Étendard I'm not saying your wrong, but what I read was that they built a replica and then added skins from the original to it, and landing gear. Only small stuff, but who knows I guess

I did come sidereal work on this particular plane. I can vouch for the rudder pedals being made in Japan prior to 1945. Nothing else had the mass to withstand the elements in the South Pacific for any length of time. They were constructed of very thin aluminum of dubious alloys designed to endure a few combat missions, not 70 years.

yes, the americans did not allow their aces back to combat. If a pilot got like 10 kills for example he will be sending back to US and train the new pilots. The japanese in the other hand had their ace pilots fighting for the rest of the war.

This is pretty bias ww2 USA planes were pretty crap especially the corsair compared to the German British and Japanese and also this is a remake of the zero so it's not actually made by Mitsubishi

There is no mechanical influence of the zero to Hellcat. It terms of function, it’s capabilities were enhanced to exploit the zero’s weak spots. Given its large radial engine and frame design, there was an incredible amount of speculation on the influence of the FW190s design out of Germany. The zero was a step backward by 4
