Minor corrections: At 6:10 i say "oil filter pressure sensor" but what i meant to say was "oil pressure sensor". It measures the oil fluid pressure after the oil has been filtered.

I am still amazed by this reliable car. Had it for seven years now. No defects, no noticeable oil consumption. It only needed tyres and wipers. Now at 120.000km. Even the brakes are still completely original.

I'm at 90,000 miles. What a blessing it has been. Got me through rough times when I got it new in 2014. I still have it and it afforded me the ability to save for my toyotas. I have an 2003 Rav4 and 2006 Sienna and thanks to this cars reliability.

I've never replaced a drain plug washer in my life. I reuse them dozens of times and I've never had one leak yet. Not that it hurts to do it if you want to, just isn't as necessary as people think.

After they are replaced that's probably when they start leaking because they might use a cheap plastic one instead of copper or whatever.

I recently bought a brand new 2024 SE, and I immediately noticed that it had horrible long dry starts every next morning, the oil lamp would take a couple of seconds to turn off after starting and you could hear the dry rattle of the engine, just like when you start up with an empty filter after an oil change, and I live in tropical 90F+ climate. I discovered that the OE Mitsu filters don’t have an anti-drain back valve, what the heck? I pulled the factory filter off and yup! It doesn’t have one. I replaced it with a Champ Labs USA made filter (my favorite brand, they make filters OE and aftermarket filters for a bunch of brand names). Problem solved, now it starts up and builds pressure almost instantly. Thankfully mine was just 187 miles in 😂. What I’m still concerned is of that 0w-20 recommendation for all temps, I live in Puerto Rico, we get 120F+ heat indexes almost all year round… Why does the US spec Mirages get 0w-20 recommendation in the manual, when the rest of the world gets the multi grade/temp graph up to 10w-30? I’m pretty sure it is the exact same engine…

Oil viscosity is likely chosen to meet fuel economy goals and takes into account the weather of the North American market. There’s a lot of discussion around oil viscosity and the different recommendations in different markets on Mirageforum.com I personally do not think that high ambient temperature will have a big impact on the recommend oil viscosity as the operating temperature of the engine is always much higher than ambient. I personally only use the oil viscosity recommended by the owners manual as I would like to keep my warranty valid. Thank you for watching!

My friend in the catalog of mirage, they say 2.8 L for engine and 0.2 for filter.
@welfarewagonrepairs
@welfarewagonrepairs 2 жыл бұрын
You are correct the official service manual says the combined oil filter and engine need 3L of oil. I used more oil because I am using an aftermarket oil filter with an anti-drain back valve. The OEM filter does not have anti-drain back valve. At 7:00 in the video you can see all the oil that my filters anti-drain back valve was holding released as i remove the filter, This is all oil that does not return to the pan because of this valve. This is why I must add more oil into the pan to get it to the correct level. This aftermarket filter also isnt exactly the same size as the OEM one, I believe its slightly larger. Also, I put exactly 3.2L into the engine myself and at 13:41 in the video when i show you the dipstick you can see that the oil level is correct. Thank you for watching the video.

The jacks free, it's a loaner, I do not want to spend money on ramps instead I bought a drain plug valve: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f71xqNyevp3Memw.html this way I can do my next oil change without jacking the car up. Subscribe if you want to see the video of me doing that in the future. Also I buy this oil in bulk 4 packs from Costco, 83 USD for 6 oil changes worth of oil.

I just bought my 2017 Mirage w/ 5 speed trans. Right under the oil filter is the starter, my filter was a cheaper one and it spilled quite a bit onto the starter. Any ideas on cleaning it, i ised brake parts cleaner and sprayed all around it.
@welfarewagonrepairs
@welfarewagonrepairs Жыл бұрын
This is normal and should not be a problem. The oil is in the skid plate and not the starter motor itself. You can reach under and try to clean it but it should not cause issues.

I had first time oil change at a service. And worker had hard time unscrewing the filter. I guess they are tightening it quite hard at a factory. Did you check if hand tightened filter doesn't leak? Or it's harder to unscrew it then to screw it on? Also I have only 10k km on mine and when I checked oil dipstick for the CVT it had some particles in the oil. Not sure if it's metal or something. What do you think, should I take it to the CVT service?
@welfarewagonrepairs
@welfarewagonrepairs 2 жыл бұрын
The factory oil filter is known to be very difficult to unscrew. Yes its harder to unscrew than it is to screw. Always install using your hand. Sometimes i can remove by hand sometimes i use the pliers shown in video. Im left handed so the unscrew direction is less comfortable for me. Normally if the oil filter leaks because it is loose. It won't be a slow drip, But instead all oil will all come out very fast. The oil is under a lot of pressure as it enters the filter. it may leak days/weeks after install because the engine can maybe shake the filter loose but i have never personally had this problem. Thankfully mitsubishi gives you the light shown at 10:48 in the video indicating low oil pressure. I have a video on CVT oil change, 10k km is very low, you probably didn't see particles in the oil, it has a paper filter. you probably saw many small bubbles which is normal. You can always just drain and fill the CVT and maybe change the paper filter, its very easy only 1 bolt. Just watch my youtube video on it.

Does it matter which way you install the washer? I have the same with like one side a little smaller than the other, to fit in and close up. Seems more logical to install it pointed inwards to the oil pan, or am I not thinking logical?

No the direction the washer is installed does not matter. When crushed it will seal the same either way.

Before removing the drain plug, did you unscrew the oil filler cap? Maybe I missed it in the video, or during your narative, but this helps the oil drain better.
@welfarewagonrepairs
@welfarewagonrepairs 2 жыл бұрын
I did not. The car is on jack stands in the front, it's sloped so that all the oil will come out no matter what. Warming the oil up by driving before the oil change does however make a very small difference as we are using Multi-viscosity oil that becomes thinner when warm. Heres a diagram showing what i mean: mirageforum.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=16802&d=1578950286 Thank you for watching.

@@welfarewagonrepairs I got into this habit when I used to do my own oil changes. It's been a while, but now that I have a simple car again, I may consider resuming. Give it a try on your next change - I'd be curious if you find any difference in drain time
@welfarewagonrepairs
@welfarewagonrepairs 2 жыл бұрын
@@ilovecables Im considering adding a drain valve as shown at 4:28 in the video to see if i can do the oil change without the jack stands as i can change the oil filter from above. As that would be substantial time savings. Normally if i'm not making the video id change the oil filter while the oil is draining, so it draining a little faster means nothing to me. You can also see in the video by the time i wipe my hands clean and get a new crush washer on the drain plug its almost done draining.

Im considering buying a 2024 with 1.2l engine and cvt transmission base model do you think it should stay reliable for many years?
@welfarewagonrepairs
@welfarewagonrepairs 5 ай бұрын
Yeah I think its a reliable vehicle but I would not buy one new today unless you are getting a good deal on it. There are rumors that the vehicle will be discontinued next year which would lower its value. It's also not a great value in todays market. You need the top trim (GT) to get basic collision avoidance in Canada. No Mirage offers the basic features that come with a Toyota Corolla such as: more than double the horse power, rear disc brakes with an electronic parking brake, telescoping steering wheel, heated windshield wipers, Blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane trace assist, radar cruse control, wireless CarPlay, independent rear suspension, GPS tracking. Not to mention higher trim Corollas features (heated steering wheel, remote start, nicer seats, All wheel drive, sun roof, phone charger, available hybrid system, better sound system, better fuel economy with active grill shutter). The LE trim corolla in canada is 27k MSRP. The top trim Mirage in white is 22k. If I was in the market for a new car I would definitely get the Corolla LE trim or higher. I tried the radar cruse with lane tracing assist in a Corolla before and it is life changing.

Compared to the dealer the savings are big. Compared to a quick lube place the savings are small. The main difference is if you are scared they will cheat you by filling the car with cheaper oil. They give you a crappy filter. Or you are scared they will under/overfill it and/or strip drain plug and filter or leave them loose.
