Mitsubishi Pajero (4M41) snapped timing chain

Mitsubishi Pajero 3.2L, 4M41 Engine, that came into us with a no start condition. The timing chain was rattling for some time before it snapped. [you would hear this]
This is a major job.

Yeeeep, over 40yrs trade life this end and boy have I seen some wild stuff. By now you would be over it re lost time and stress wise. Yet this stuff neeeevvveeerrr leaves ones memory.😉🙂👍👍

Hi there. i have just replaced the cyl head, old one cracked between inlet and exhaust valve seat, and I find the cam timing chain too tight in my estimation. The tensioner pin does not move out enough to engage the pawl in a serration. My worry is a snapped chain if I go further. The chain is not riding up on either of the guides, and when removing the cam sprockets during disassembly, I ran a zip tie through the dowel hole to maintain cam sprocket to chain correctness. I'm stumped.

That sounds really good, unlike mine, I think I will need to replace the chain and guides before it snaps, @410k now and sounds like chain slapping at idle 😢 great vid love that you speak like a mechanic/engineer and not some pc wanker 😎🤣👍cheers

Hi Phil. G'day. I wonder if you're familiar with a ticking sound from a 4M41 when the engine is hot? any ideas what that may be? Is it the timing chain streching?

You need change timing guide. Possibly the chain tensioner also.

So it possible the cause was the worn upper chain guide?

if your thinking of just replacing that . Don't replace the lot.

I wouldn't Know Sorry, There was that much free play with all the guide and chain worn, i know the chain caught one of the guides behind the timing case.

@@PTPrecisionAutomotive interesting.... i changed my chain because of the missing top guide and when i stripped it i found the chain had actualy eaten through most of the metal on the bottom small guide. was there any nylon guide left or just metal? i wonder if its these bottom guides than are more the factor for snapping chains than the infamous top one that everyone thinks is the only issue

@@27walker27 Yeah it was not the fault of the top guide, it was the one down on the left side. Just all worn out.

Chain check the front of the engine for any plastic covers ? im sure they are chain.

Hey Phil...Is it just bad luck the chain snapped or is there a service interval where the chain needs replacing and it wasn't done ?

no i don't think there is an interval . i would say it would have been very noisy and no one did anything about it, it also had an aftermarket Tune kit fitted to it.

i would say its worth changing at around 80k based on mine, i changed my chain and guides at 80k after a missing top guide. but the other 2 big guides both had cracks in and another bottom guide had been completely worn away and the chain had chewed 90% of the way through the metal part of it too

@@jotk5978 I did it myself….don’t think I’d fancy doing it again haha, it was a big job and I would imagine it won’t be cheap, I think Mitsubishi quoted about 14 hours/£1200 if I remember right, that was a few years back, and it sounded like non of their mechanics had done one before
