Thanks you for your comments! I do my best to keep up with them for the first few days after a video comes out, but due to the volume of comments on all of my videos, and to the general hustle and bustle of life, I must give up the fight after a while. If you are leaving a question four or more days after a video comes out I can't guarantee I'll see it, but perhaps one of my other viewers knows the answer and can help out. Thanks in advance to those who contribute and share their knowledge. Cheers and stay safe everyone!

I feel the exact same way. It's like most things in life.........balance. There's no reason to shake granny's pictures off the wall, but nobody can stomach a brand new stock motorcycle that sounds like a sewing machine either.

Your attitude towards exhaust notes and volumes resonates with mine. I live by a busy road and the bikes (no matter the type or size) with no baffles are just obnoxious, and the sound is way worse for everyone else than themselves. So, in my opinion, it's not just selfish to go baffle-free, it's on par with vandalism in terms of knowingly and willfully annoying the general public.

Thanks for sharing! Yes, from the bike you can hear the noise a bit but the wind muffles it. The person standing still as the bike goes by is the one who gets the full blast.

My T7 looks and is set up much like yours, and I have to agree that the exhaust sound is just too quiet.....most of the time I end up driving it off the tach as I can't hear it over the wind and road noise! That Mivv looks and sounds great, may have to go that way on mine at some point as well! And yeah, I'd probly keep that baffle in as well, same thoughts on good sounds while keeping it respectful to my neighbors! Cheers to you both, always great content and well made videos!

Good informative video with little bias or bias explained. Thank you!! IMO I put Delkevic slipons on my FJR for a few reasons 1) In spite of the study in an average slow moving traffic situation, I know others can hear me and may glance over. Knowing I’m there. 2) Stock exhaust sound is so quiet all I hear is the valve train, the sewing machine sound. Hearing some exhaust note helps with gear shifting I seem to smooth out the shift when I hear the exhaust. 3) The FJR is heavy at 650 lbs. Twin stock exhaust adds about 15 lbs over the slipons. I take off the side bags and the bike drops below 600 lbs. much more fun.

Honestly i agree with this. I had a hornet 900 with the end baffles removed by the first owner. I loved it. It had a sweet bassy rumbling growl to it, but once you got moving it was difficult to hear over the wind. It was perfect! If I ever do purchase a bike again I’m problably going to leave it stock for the first year or two or until I get bored.

I had a Yoshimura full exhaust on my MT-07 for pretty much the same reasons you went with the Mivv, but mainly the sound. I never thought about cutting down the baffle though. That would have made it perfect. I used to go back and forth taking the baffle in and out. Too loud and too quiet.

You sir are right! On both the baffle front and on the loud pipes saving lives. Like previous comments shared, the noise level is more of a gentlemen’s agreement if u still want to have friendly neighbors , but also, since your exhaust is at your rear end, to hope the louder you are the safer you are is just false, that will only work when your rear end is at the same level as other motorists, and by that time your face may be facing the wrong way. Still, as long as u get the good sound and the others can also appreciate it you sir might have struck gold :)

I am with ya. I usually put a slip on on my bikes that saves some weight and ads some depth to the sound but is only a little louder than stock. I also stay off the throttle in residential neighbourhoods to keep the noise and the speed down. 🤓

Nice video. I am considering purchasing the "Mivv Exhaust Mufflers Ghibli Black for Moto Guzzi V7 Classic". They look like they would be a great improvement visually, but I have been wondering about the sound. I had a bad experience with slip-on mufflers for an Indian Scout and do not want another set of obnoxiously loud pipes. I am mostly interested in the weight savings and the looks. Nice to know that the Mivv mufflers allow for fine-tuning the level of sound.

I went through the exact same experience. Bought a new slip-on, did not like the sound with the baffle in, and found the no baffle too loud, modified the baffle and tuned it to just the right level of noise (I swapped the pipe in the baffle for a slightly wider one, and shortened it). For me it is more about getting the sound right, than making it loud.

Initially wanted the Vance and Hines shortshots or sideshots on my Sportster because I thought they looked cool. Then I heard a couple sportsters with the shortshots, and decided in the interest of keeping neighborhood tranquility and my own eardrums, opted for the twin slash slip-ons. They look good and sound great, and on long trips, don’t give you a constant ringing in your ear after you stop.

I have owned three Harleys in recent years. My Sportster had a stock exhaust. I cut the baffle out, drilled the holes larger and welded it back in. I achieved the rumble I was looking for withou excessive noise. My next was also a used bike, a Twin Cam with Screaming Eagle pipes. It sounded nice but on longer rides got to be tiring. I took the baffles out and welded in a diverter plate. Problem solved. My next bike was also a Twin Cam but new. It sounded like a sewing machine with all the engine clatter and almost no exhaust sound. I did the same thing as what I did to the Sportster again with good results. I now have a pair of Moto Guzzis, great sound straight from the factory. Good for me although some riders put aftermarket exhausts on theirs. I don't think they sound as good as the factory pipes.

Had a street legal screaming eagle slipons on my 2008 883 XL, loved the sound. Then I tried V&H straight shots on my 2016 heritage, hated it , too loud. Then I did it again, I installed V&H short shots on my 2018 breakout, and guess what, me and my neighbors of course, hated it. I even developed a condition called tinnitus.Learned my lesson, from now on only stock pipes.

edit: damn that Mivv pipe sounds nice and throaty! I have a DanMoto slip-on installed on my Ducati Flat Track Pro, no baffle BUT I live in the middle of the Chilcotin wilderness in BC and ride 80/20 offroad/road and have found that wild life pay attention to me and I like that as deer have the most annoying habit of freezing then darting in the opposite direction that you think they'll go, (usually right in front of you!) as well we have herds of wild horses roaming everywhere and they too get out of the way, it does sound amazing too, snap, crackles and pop on gear changes and decel, BUT my days of being a douch bag are long past and I get where you all are coming from in the comments, other issue is hearing, mine that is, long rides...well I've been using earplugs since my ol Buell XB9SX with it's D&D exhaust used to shred my ears. ride safe, ride often and always ATGATT! This. Spent so much time scouring the internet to find slip ons for my Scout and found some that supposedly weren't ear shattering. They were still friggin loud as hell after I put them on, so I immediately bought the baffles for them, and now they're just a smidge louder than "just right". Always mind my right hand while in the neighborhood, and always clutch in while passing kids/baby carriages. If Indians stock performance exhaust wasn't so expensive I would have bought those. It's a bewildering wonder why nobody makes aftermarket slipons/full exhaust systems that aren't stupid loud but still give us, the rider, something nice to listen to while remaining at an acceptable noise level.

I bought Tab Performance slip ons with the quiet baffles for my Scout and they are loud as hell. Contacted Tab and they said that the stock mufflers have the catalytic converters built in and the Tabs don't, so they don't benefit from silencing effect of the cats. They sound great but you have to be easy on the throttle to keep them quiet in the neighborhood. I'm guessing the OEM Scout performance exhaust cost twice as much as the others because they have the cats built in.

Years ago, I had a Harley Fat Boy with aftermarket pipes. There were baffles involved, but they were cut down performance units that, under WOT operation, were as loud as open pipes. After eight years & 89,000 miles, I was sick of the racket. I sold that machine & have never changed the pipes on any bike since. I did notice that I was less noticed by other vehicles, pedestrians, etc on my stock exhaust bikes. Just a personal observation. Spokes, your bike sounds very nice & isn't too loud. Good choice.

@@DifferentSpokesTV if I can give you one piece of advice install a new spark plug and read the spark plug the next time you change the oil to see if it's black or chalky white if it's too lean if lean is the case you can always close the gap a couple of points and that'll cause it to run a little bit richer. That's the way we used to do carburetors back in the old days. The new fuel injection ever since they started using O2 sensors they can adjust a few points richer and minus a few points and make it leaner and they call that long-term and short-term fuel curve but try a new plug you'd be surprised how it looks after 500 miles.

I use to own a Suzuki VX800, which was bought second-hand, with straight pipes. Two things happened simultaneously: first, I use to go to work very early in the morning, which results in complaints about the noise and, second, I went on a trip that first weekend, and got there and back with a headache and with my ear ringing. I replaced the straight pipes with the original ones the same night, after getting back from the trip. It was also very, very annoying to listen to dozens of bikes with no mufflers every night, so I thought that my neighbors were entitled to some level of peace and quiet inside their houses. That said, it was a 1993 VX800, which had a nice rumble even with the original pipes... that's hard to say about present-day bikes.

In our places many people install aftermarket pipes and sell stock ones... then start looking to buy stock back ) Loud sound gives a headache if you're riding for hours. Also, there was a test about the pros of loud pipes in traffic. The test showed... no special difference, as the sound goes back, drivers in front still don't hear you (most likely, we're talking about the same test)

Many years ago I bought a used Harley that came with Screamin' Eagle mufflers, they used to sound deep and not too loud, I liked them very much. Some years after I switched that bike for an other used Harley that came equiped with some Vince & Hines short shots. For many years I appreciated the rumble it does, but I always missed the deep note of the Screamin' Eagle and, more recently, I got myself finding the roar of those Vince & Hines a little tiresome, specially on longer trips. So, I recently bought the original exhaust sistem and gonna fit it to the bike soon. And, not in a much distant future, I'll may move away from the motor co. in favor of something brand new, smaller and more practical (I already got an idea on that respect). In that case, I'll keep the original mufflers until I'm able to switch to a pair of S&S street legal on wich I'll tend to keep the baffles on. For me, what keep us, bikers, alive is not noise, but to have one eye on the road and the other "patrolling" distracted drivers that surrounds us like they are on a chasing mission. As usual you did a informative, fun and sensible video. I liked very much when you pointed out how drivers tend to be more interessed in checking their cel phones while driving than being concerned about killing someone else (and, let's concede, even themselves). It's a shame that those same drivers won't be whatching your, and many other videos, that talk about their manners and responsibilities. Anyway, congrats from Brazil.

Hey mate, love your videos and I agree with your points. I do more or less the same with my bikes going out of the little village where I live or coming back. The only thing I would like to mention, I watch that Rumanian study, and it's not quite scientific and there are a lot of factors not taken in account to get to a conclusion so definitive as "loud pipes don't save lives". There are other things, like coming from other directions and distracted pedestrians, static traffic, etc. Just wanted to mention that, keep the good work man! And lovely pick of bikes.

@@DifferentSpokesTV Well, it may save a fall hitting a pedestrian, could be called "loud pipes avoid hitting distracted pedestrians". Maybe saving lives is a big statement, but saying that don't save it it's even bigger, should have had in account all accidents and from the data having the conclusion that never saved any live, or lives. This is the study that the advrider mention. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rJ-Bh7OqsrCrl6M.html If you see, the tests were only taken stationary and with the motorcycle in one direction. Not having in account Doppler that even may reduce the incoming sound. You could be passing stationary traffic people with open windows or just moving traffic in the motorway with high revs but low relative speed difference. My point is not saying that saves lives, but that I don't think the study refutes the theory.

Love the balanced approach here. In my country (Vietnam), big bike riders usually install after-market loud pipes and then go down to the busy streets squeezing the throttles just like 5:38 to have fun and seemingly gain attention (rich-people-in-developing-country mentality). That behavior annoys me so much. I love bikes but there's no way I'll be a part of their community LOL I'd love to have exhaust with good sound because it's a part of the fun, but don't want to accidentally cause a heart attack on a random grandpa or grandma when I ride past them.

yah know i've owned a few different Harley motorcycles started on a 750 street, upgraded to a fatbob that i sadly wrecked but gladly walked away from, got a HD Roadster, and now upgraded to the new Pan Am, i see the pros and cons of both, Honestly the loud pipes are nice for city riding where you can enjoy the various sounds of the pipes and lets you hear better through a helmet what the machine is doing but are very obnoxious for long periods of time and can mentally exhaust the rider faster, quiet pipes are amazing for if you're wanting a much more relaxed and simple atmosphere, honestly highly recommended for a more experienced rider who can feel more than hear what the bike is doing but as a result you lose a lot of the atmosphere and theater and possible a very small amount of safety having such a quiet motorcycle

I love the sound of a throaty v8 but I hate the sound of a throaty v6 or an i4. I removed the baffles on a Harley Deuce that I bought new and thought it sounded great but when I switched to a Goldwing I learned to appreciate the quiet of the exhaust which made the sounds of the engine more noticeable and very enjoyable. I would change the exhaust on a Tenere too but, primarily to relocate the muffler and to reduce the weight. If I could do that and keep it relatively quiet would be my preference. Loud pipes do not save lives. I guarantee it. I'm a retired Locomotive Engineer and I'm pretty sure that a locomotive whistle/horn has never been installed to blow to the rear. And, in my 42 years of railroading I can assure you that cagers don't even hear the horn on a locomotive even when it's blowing right at them. You don't want to know how I know that.

Cannot imagine a multi day trip on a motorcycle equipped with a loud pipe. My stock exhaust sounds too loud to me, and that’s when I ride with earplugs, which I always do. I don’t hesitate to use the horn as it works way better than loud engine. Also good brakes and good braking skills saved my life countless times.

Big thing here in Germany these days, loud pipes. Most bikers try to get their volume down, at least in populated areas. There have been a lot of restrictions on routes popular for bikes, culminating in nitpicking road checks for motorcycles. Lot of people had their bikes grounded on the spot and the exhaust confiscated as evidence, and some roads have been closed completely for motorcycles. Most riders are like 'better ride quietly than having it banned'. Myself, I have a v-twin bike with an aftermarket exhaust with baffles, and I have recently repacked the cans with new wool. I like the rumble, but I understand people who are fed up with hearing lots of rumbles all day. So in urban areas, I control the volume with my right hand. I also consider downgrading to stock. Worst guys are - sorry to say - Harley riders with straight pipes, ATVs and 50 cc scooters with that obnoxious ear-piercing squeal. Both types also tend to uselessly rev their engines for extra attention. Fun fact - manufacturers tend to use overly long transmission ratios so they lower the revs in the approval test procedures (admittable volume at a defined speed and gear, i.e. 80 dB at 50 km/h in 2nd and 3rd gear anf full acceleration). So many guys I know put a few extra teeth on the rear sprocket to improve rideability.

Dont know about cars, but I live in the mountains, an everything I own is loud because of deer. Lot of deer around here an its always the nice quet cars hitting them. I get to watch a lot of them on my property. Deer bolt when they think the "preditor" is getting to close to them. A quiet car gets pretty close before deer react. Sometimes they will run right in to the side of the car. The trucks with loud tires an the bikes with loud pipes, they usually run before they get within a half mile of the deer. How loud is enough? Probably about half as loud as my stuff is. I have been told my trucks tires can be heard for about a mile and a half on a quiet day. You can hear my pipes about half that. Almost hit a horse once, but no deer. And I have never came around a corner to see kids playing in the road. They have always moved to the side by the time I see them. Loud is worth that to me. But I am just driving, I am not revbombing everyone. I dont think anyone cars of something loud drives by. But hang around acting a fool, an they will start noticing your loud too.

If I didn't crash on the right side of the bike so much off-road, I would have kept mine stock. As it is, I went with a high mount exhaust on my T7. Also, since you showed riding in the sand, other than the obvious better tires, I found that increasing the compression damping a bit on the forks helps keep the front end from diving as much in the dry sand. Poorer pavement curve carving though...😉

I can't stand loud pipes, I don't expect bikes to be whisper quiet but if you are setting off car alarms as you drive by you have gone too far. Of the 9 street bikes I have owned in my life I have only changed the exhaust on 2: I put a Vance & Hines Q Series (Q for quiet) with the additional quiet baffle on my '03 HD Night Train for a power upgrade, it is slightly louder than stock but not obnoxious. I had a '14 Honda CB1100 that I swapped out the exhaust purely for cosmetic reasons as the stock unit was massive, sound didn't really change much. I have no plans to change the exhaust on my new HD Pan America.

I have 3 bikes. A 99 Valkyrie Interstate with normal exhaust 6 into 6 inside 2 pipes. I like it because at 100kph I can talk out loud to myself and hear myself fine. I have a 96 Shadow Ace 1100 with cobra pipes with proper baffles and its a single pin motor that sounds nice idling and puttering around but under load way too loud. The I have a 96 Sporty 1200 stage 4 with v&h straight shots with proper baffles and its way too loud even at idle. I ride at lower rpms to cut down the noise and under load its insane. I have to wear ear plugs on it. Both bikes are fully baffled. Not drilled out or modified at all. I dont know why cobra and v&h insist on making pipes so loud. Needless to say the Harleys in town with no baffles are horrible. PS. V&H does not make pipes for the 96 Sporty anymore so they dont sell the quiet baffle for it either. I wrote them last year and they are beautiful pipes and I can afford to just throw away $1000 pipes.

Actually, most aftermarket exhausts steal a few hp from your bike, as manufacturers optimize their pipes so the engine works best - and by best I don't mean only peak performance, but also in terms of fuel consumption (optimum cylinder filling), durability (think internal cooling) etc. Most people buy their pipes only to get louder and don't even care about performance. Noise regulations are also a point, sure, but as I said elsewhere, manufacturers have other ways to deal with that, too, longer end gear ratios for example. The 2021 Honda Fireblade meets EU regulations by a flap exhaust and a very long gear ratio, all adjusted so the legal demands are met at exactly the required conditions. In all other rpm ranges, the bike gets excruciatingly loud, and on the twisties, it becomes almost unrideable, because you can't use the enormous power due to the gear ratio. Btw. the guy and his company are pronounced 'ah-KRAH-po-vitsh'... he's Slovenian ;-)

Truth is, when I look at aftermarket exhausts, I'm more interested in the performance gain and the weight savings than I am the sound. Yeah, I really do like a bike to have a nice rumble to it... but not so loud that you're breaking noise ordinances or pissing off the neighbours. Those just lead to unnecessary hassles. And if you're riding distance, really loud pipes can start to wear on you after while... I know lots of riders who have to wear earplugs to be comfortable on their own bike, and in my estimation that's not only stupid, it's dangerous; it restricts your ability to hear traffic sounds around you that just might save your life.

The only vehicles’ exhaust noise I hear where I live are motorcycles. Loud pipes will draw the ire of others and hence the authorities who will start to put restrictions in place. There are already noise cameras in some cities. But then again in 10 years it will all be electric so no more loud pipes! Personally I prefer riding off road under the radar so quiet is my choice.

If you didn't open up the intake, opening up the exhaust should do absolutely NOTHING to performance. That's just the laws of physics and I believe are non-negotiable. Once you do open up the intake to match the opened up exhaust, you will need to adjust air and fuel delivery in order to take advantage of the opened up respiration. But even before doing the fuel delivery adjustment an improvement will probably be there somewhat. But only exhaust or only intake, you get nothing in terms of performance. It is all in your head (louder=more power).

IMO ... It is all about the pipe. Stock systems mask the character of most ever bike. Even my staid BMW RT became a much more enjoyable ride with the addition of a Laser exhaust. My FJ-09 sounded like a denuded sewing machine with it's stock pipe. A Delvik brought it to life. It's not so much that I like to take my bikes for a ride ... It's more that I'd like to ride with them and hear every note they sing as we tackle a grade or drop into valley.

Idk how people make the argument that they don’t save lives. I’m sure none of the anti loud pipe people commute in a major city. They don’t work great at speed on the interstate but they definitely alert people to your presence in high congestion situations where people make random moves and lane changes with no warning.
