Mixed Media Art: Getting Ready for an Art Walk Event

In this video, I'm sharing how I prepared and organized to exhibit my art in a local coffee shop. This was not a curated event but rather part of an Art Walk in which I was invited to participate by the coffee shop manager. In Seattle, different areas of the city have monthly Art Walks where a business will host an artist for a designated period of time. There is a set date for the opening when the business is generally open later than usual and the public can come in and view the art in a festive environment. Although it can be rather intimidating it also is quite gratifying to see all your art hung in one place. I am truly grateful for this experience.
As I show many of the steps I took to prepare I hope you are encouraged to try this for yourself. I believe art is meant to be shared even if it takes you out of your comfort zone. Maybe especially then.

Wow Pam, that's a lot of amazing work, they look so beautiful in the coffee shop! I know what you mean, people buy clothes and food, but when it comes to art, it has to connect with the person, like music. I hope you make a lot of sales. Thank you for the video ❤❤

Thanks for watching Maria--it does take a lot of planning (at least for me) to pull this off. I appreciate you understanding what I mentioned about art needing to connect with the viewer--it's takes many people looking before one will decide to purchase. So far I've sold a few greeting cards and I have 2 weeks to go.

Your pieces looked amazing in the coffee shop, Pam! Well done! My town (in the southern interior of BC, so not TOO far away from you lol) is big on art walks too...well, anything artsy, to be fair lol. Art hangs year round in many businesses, but there are two major art walk events in the summer months and it's pretty neat to see all the shops supporting local artists. Good for you for taking it on again! :)

Thanks Lianne! You do live close--are you near Vancouver (that's my only real reference point!). I think Art Walk's in the summer are the best--everyone is out and about whereas not so much on a rainy November evening.

@@pamhemmerling Good for you, hopefully you've sold more by now. Unfortunately, it's getting tougher and tougher for artists to make any real money in this economy. I know a lot of people who've completely stopped trying to sell online due to higher fees and fewer buyers. I was considering a couple of brick & mortar shops on that take artwork on consignment but whoa, their fees are 40% to 50% ... no way, it's not worth it when an artist has put so much of their time, creativity, originality, and heart & soul into their work. However, I don't think these factors should discourage artists from doing their own thing and even if they never make a penny, it's about the creative spirit and personal satisfaction. ☮
@pamhemmerling
@pamhemmerling 8 ай бұрын
@@qso3566 I agree with all you've said. I know some artists are quite successful in selling their art but it is definitely a matter of getting it in front of the right audience--that can take a lot of persistence. I've tried a lot of different strategies--entering exhibits, selling at art fairs, social media, building a website none of which has proven to be successful for me personally. But all that being said I have come to terms with not selling much and try not to take it personally. For me, I am honored when an opportunity arises to display my art as it is so fun to see it all displayed whether anything sells or not.
@qso3566
@qso3566 8 ай бұрын
@@pamhemmerling It does take persistence and a lot of time in building the right audience and loyal followers. Yes! I've done the very same thing, Pam, tried different venues that did not work for me ... when I decided to "go commercial" I had Instagram, Facebook, and a website with a shop integrated into it but after more than a year I had sold a few pieces but could not build enough of an audience to justify the time it took to maintain the social media and shop ... I was literally lost in the online crowd ... I then tried Etsy, no success there and ultimately left because I don't like how that company is run, they betrayed a lot of true artists who helped build their platform from the start by later allowing tons of mass-produced stuff ... tried Big Cartel, no traffic at all ... then I had an epiphany and realized online marketing & selling my art is NOT what I'm supposed to do so I backed completely away from the commercial side and frankly, it was a relief ... I just made the art I was doing at that time for my own enjoyment and gave away some pieces every now and again, it was liberating and allowed me to fully enjoy the art without worrying about all the hassles of marketing and shipping. I now do pen sketches/watercolor and make vintage folios, ephemera, and journals, and recently entertained the idea of going the brick & mortar shop route here in town, but like I said, the consignment fees are too high and there'd be no real profit, but ... if it's about wanting your art to be seen and enjoyed by others, and monetary profit is less important, then a shop would be an ideal situation because you don't have that hassle of online marketing and shipping. No, you can't take it personally, it's the nature of the economy today and the online market is SO over-saturated now, plus look at stores like Hobby Lobby and all the fairly low-priced, mass-produced art and decor they sell ... it's hard for artists who put their heart & soul in their work to compete with that. So yeah, what you say about being honored when an opportunity does arise, then run with it ... and if you sell a lot or a little, great and if you don't sell anything at all, at least you get to see your work on display and people get to see your work. I truly believe some artists simply are not meant to be commercial artists but rather to create art for the sheer happiness and sense of personal accomplishment. And really, that should be the main thing, right? 🙂☮
