If you are looking for pure experimentation, this video is for you! If, however, you are looking for a more polished, better produced video, might I suggest this collage paper gelli printing video instead: • How to Make Collage Pa...
I decided to experiment with chalk pastels and my gelli plate after someone told me about another artist who made a video about it. Naturally, I cannot remember who told me or who the artist was who mentioned it *rolling my eyes at myself*. It sounded interesting and I decided to give it a go - BUT - I am intentionally making this video before I search up the other video demonstration to see what I can come up with on my own. I'm flying blind with my VERY old pastels (circa 2011 and 1993) but had a really good time experimenting and ended up with some really cool collage paper!

A much easier and more effective way to use pastels with a gelli plate is to draw your design on plain paper, priniter paper is fine, and then put that face down on the plate, rub over it, and remove the paper. Then, put a THIN, well brayered coat of paint or medium over all, then use your art paper to pull the print. It makes amazing images. The pastel will be fixed on the pull, won't smear at all. The original image you made & transferred to the plate is still usable, and you can add more pastel before printing with it again if you like.

First off, you are brave to film your experiments. I have some helpful hints (not meant as criticism) that could help you. The first paint on the plate will be the foreground of the print . Let layers air dry between applications. Use a fan if you need to speed up drying, but never a heat tool. It will dry the top layer but the paint next to the plate will dry more slowly and layers won't all cone up together. Use about 1/2 the amount of medium or paint you used on pick up prints. the last layer should be almost transparent and you will see part of yhe painted layer through it. the pick up paper can only absorb so much before its saturated. That's why your green and black layers didn't pull the print, but just themselves. The gloss medium needs to be washed off the plate before continuing to print , if it didn't all come off in first pull. What's left behind creates a barrier between subsequent layers and the magical surface if the gel plate. Since it wasn't washed off, all prints pulled after the gloss medium stopped absorbing at that level. Hope this saves you some product and some headaches. I learned the most from Berget Koopsen and Elizabeth St Hilaire. Hugs.

You ended up with some very interesting papers. A few days ago, I tried using pastels in a similar fashion. It was not my idea, but saw it on another YT channel. Applied the pastels directly to paper (I used tracing paper) and then place the paper face down on the gelli plate for a few minutes. The plate will hold the pastel and I used matte medium to lift the image. Had to work fast because I was using tissue and deli papers. Pastels didn't rub off, but I painted over it with matte gel for extra protection.

This is fantastic. I do appreciate the raw, unedited footage and your think aloud. Very generously shared. I wondered if the gel created a barrier as another commented. I subscribe to the very thin coat for pulling layers but wondered in this instance if it would work to use a little more paint and wait just a bit before laying the paper down. Thought it might allow the paint to bond to the dried gel. I'm going to experiment with this later.

love watching the process! i find that when i am pulling prints i need to keep the ‘pulling’ paint/medium very thin and thus move very quickly. the thicker the paint the less it pulls up. i also have no patients for things to dry. :) love the watercolour effect of the early prints.
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart Жыл бұрын
Thanks Saskia! That's interesting - I agree that the thin paints work well and come up easily with each pull, but I find that the heavy body paints help "clean up" my gel plate to pull up any paint lingering from all of the previous layers. Or at least they used to! Haha! I will have to clean up my plate and see if it changes anything. This is my oldest gel plate and I think it might be time to switch brands...

8:17 I struggled with this for a long time before I understood why. I always thought it was because I let it dry too much but actually, your paper tore because you actually didn't let it dry long enough! You can actually leave your paper to dry overnight on your plate and then it will clean everything off your plate. You probably had a bit too much gel medium, which in turn, wet your paper and made it fragile. If it had dried a bit more it would have been stronger. I also noticed that thicker paper tears more, simply because it absorbs more water and wet paper is fragile. Sometimes when I'm pulling a print and it starts tearing, I immediately stop, apply some gel medium to the tear to glue it back together and just let it dry a bit longer. That's why it's good to have several gel plates - while one is drying I can continue working with another. My favourite paper for collage paper is deli paper. Not only is it nice and thin (and translucent), but that stuff really takes a beating!

I enjoyed watching the experiments. Can I suggest trying different types of paper? I have found some of my paper gets stuck easily to the plate and some I could leave there forever and would never get stuck. I use a wide variety of papers ex: printer paper, tracing, graph, tissue, deli, parchment, envelopes, handmade, newsprint, book pages, magazine pages... oh there are just so many kinds in different weights. Packing tape is great for cleaning your plate plus you can use the strips in collage.

Thanks, Curly Tea! The funny part is that I ALWAYS use the 80 lb paper that I was using in this video with my gel plate. The only thing I did differently was using the pastels and leaving the paper on a bit longer than usual (the timing was my downfall lol). Tissue paper is my second thing to use. I haven't done much with magazine pages, but my magazines have been pulled out from the depths of my paper storage for collages lately, so I'll have to put them to good use. And THANK YOU for the packing tape trick - GENIUS!

Have you tried applying the pastel to paper, pressing it on the gel plate and then lifting with gel medium? It works pretty well! And you don't need to leave the paper very long on the gelli (so hopefully it doesn't stick). Also try less gel medium... you really need almost none to pick up the print from the gelli.

Just started following you and enjoyed this. I was wondering if all the gloss medium wasn’t sealing the pastels a bit, making it harder to pull. I would like to see how it works with pastels, and then using acrylic paint without any medium to make pulls. In fact I will go try that right now as I’ve recently pulled a boxful off Sennelier pastels out and was wondering how to use them with the gelli plate. Also, I wondered if pulling using delipaper might work better with the gloss medium as far as not making tears in the paper. Just some thoughts. The video is helpful because we learn what doesn't work - which is a good thing when aforementioned (at the beginning of the tutorial) art budget can't take the hit of an extended trial and error session. I'm wondering if changing paper might have been another way to further explore what works and what doesn't? I admire your perseverance, I'd have pulled out the packing tape after 30 minutes. That add paint/pastels/marks-pull-cycle really can suck one in!

Your comment is quite old but you peaked my interest! Wouldn't wet paper make it less likely that you'll pick up the paint on the plate or take ages to dry? And what's the glycerin tip about? Can you elaborate? I've never heard either of those tips and I have been watching gel printing videos on KZfaq for about a decade, been doing it myself for half as long.

Ohhhh no, Where's your WATER BOTTLE?? Unfortunately, when you dried the gel medium, which is basically like glue, you sealed the pastels onto the plate. Thoroughly saturating the plate with water or alcohol might break down the medium. The pastels on paper pressed to clean plate and then go over with titanium white works. Without experimentation, we would never know what works and doesn't. Great effort and some interesting pulls.

I think there is still potential with pastels though personally I would be very concerned for my Gelli by now as they cost a LOT where I live. I think it was brave or crazy to use heat on it! I hope it recovers. I did like some of the results but would have like to see what happened from a clean Gelli plate, or maybe one with just a layer of clear stuff, medium or gesso. I really like the drawn on bits from the first few pulls. I have to say I would have given up a lot sooner than this and given my Gelli a good bath in warm water. This works for my brayers so I think it would on the plate. I really like the 12x12 , well I can dream….

Hi Lindy! Haha! I didn't mean for you to worry about my plate - the hair dryer and pastels don't do any damage. You can tell that my plate is old and tired - it probably does need a good scrub - but I do enjoy the random marks and old layers that get absorbed into the new pulls. For me, it's part of the charm of the gelli plate. Where are you living that the plates are so hard to come by? Luckily in the US they aren't too expensive so I can take more risks without much fear. I'm happy to do the risk taking on your behalf so you can only use what works! :)

@@jackieschomburgart I am in England. They are really expensive here, especially the leading brand, which costs twice as much. I like the old stuff on my plate too! I use pastels quite a lot, I pull them off a paper drawing rather than working direct on the plate, it works really well off brown craft or packing paper, and produces pretty much what you drew, no reversal. Works with conte crayon and charcoal pencils too. Pull with whatever colours take your fancy. And mark make in anyway you want. Of course you can add to and alter your original drawing as much as you want as well, and add different layers onto your print, my favourite way to do this is with golden open transparent colours. I am in love with some of their yellows!

The reason your pull didn't work was because you used a gloss Medium, either gloss or matte medium. Those mediums are a Glue, they will always make your papers adhere to the plate, it will not life all you paint off either, so keep that in mind and take it for what its worth.

Ummmmm just my 3¢....BUT.... I don't think there is any need to police anyone's choice of the words they use when it comes to anything really, especially not Art supplies. As "Soft Pastels" and "Chalk Pastels" or two different things that are made and sold. Or at the very least they are the same items but what a company decides to call them is interchangeable. As products are clearly labeled and sold as chalk pastels as well as some being labeled and sold as soft pastels. So that could easily make her neither right or wrong in the word she used to call the product. And ultimately you don't know what the the item is labeled as on the box because it was not really ever shown to the audience. Just don't think there is any reason for such a direct and harsh comment like that !! Just sayin
