Creating mixed media painted paper has become my favorite hobby.
When you paint paper just for the fun of it (or to explore new artistic techniques/art supplies), you have nothing to lose.
There is no pressure to end up with a finished piece of art.
At best, you’ll end up with a gorgeous piece of hand-painted paper.
At worst, you’ll end up with an interesting piece of collage fodder.
In this video, I share a process I use to create interesting mixed-media painted papers that I use in abstract collage and other creative projects.
But I’ll let you in on a little secret…
Painting paper is my happy place.

Knowing that you are very accomplished with the use of materials, can you perhaps fill us newbies in on the types of acrylics & how they differ? (Realizing this topic is open ended with many variables, feel free to decline but here are a few other queries that perhaps you can include in your future videos: How different company paints vary from one another thick, creamy, transfer etc Can different company acrylics be used simultaneously in the same work? IE: Can Golden paints be used with JoSonia Do certain company paints work differently on different papers? What are the advantages of using pearl acrylics? The queries are endless & I hesitated to bother you but I have gone on the internet & have seen varied answers. I trust your expertise far more than Google! (A segment on brushes too could be valuable too) 😁

I like the phrase "reading the art". I also have an old book on my table where i clean up the excess paint from the brush.

Hi from Scotland, just started using gel plate and making collages, after school I had 50 years with no artwork in my life at all, but restarted when Covid came along. Usually I had been doing very detailed pet portraits etc, in pencil, oil, acrylic. But am enjoying the freedom of gel plates and collage.

Hi from Arizona. Ive been experimenting with paint and paper lately too. I was kinda surprised that this is a brand new art channel as you seem to be quite accomplished and have so many good ideas. I‘m a native Californian, but have been living in Austria for over 40 years. My concentrated art journey began in 2017 with Zentangle. The following year I decided to explore watercolor, with my main emphasis on botanical watercolor. After extensive exploration I was introduced to the world of intuitive painting, first with watercolor and then finally with acrylics, which I‘ve grown to love. My main focus right now is collage and mixed media. I LOVE mark making, gel printing, and simply playing around with paper and paint much like you do here. Thus I‘m really happy to have found your channel and love watching you work your magic!

Painting paper is real fun and surely a part of my creative life. I had to smirk when your video came to the point of book painting. I do that, too. But I am more into using old children books. You know these ones the kids scribbled in and with worn out pages. It's like having just another sketch book but already with interesting background.

You are a wonderful discovery! I have been a collector of art suppliers, a person who longs to make art but has never jumped into the actual making. Thinking I’m not artistic but I love color, texture and amassing a roomful of beautiful supplies with the wish of using them to create the visions in my head. Hi Pat - thank you for being here. Yes, the freedom can be a messy business, and it's clear that that's where I lean. However, I envy the artists I see who do manage to be neat in their creative expression - like people who do zentangle. That's the wonderful thing about creating - there is room for all of us 🥰

@@PaintedPaperStudio exactly! There is so much pressure (in fact too much pressure!) for artists to produce perfect works of art 🎨! It is impossible to be perfect all of the time which results in some of us doubting our abilities...mind you I have never created art for others only for myself so I created my own freedom in a sense. For therapeutic purposes mostly. Doodling saved me in the pandemic.

I love painting painting papers also, but rarely do, due to limited storage space since I can never figure out how to use them. I would love to see how you use these papers. Thank you for your kind words - they really mean a lot to me. Limited space can be tough when painting papers (especially when trying to dry papers, right?!) I will do an upcoming video on what to do with all the papers because it is an important question. 😀

Hi from the North of England. I've just started playing with mixed media, acrylic paint, gelli plate printing. I started out with junk journals some 5 years ago after a traumatic event in my life. Now, I'm steering towards art journals. Loving the process. Your mark making and painted pages are gorgeous, and you've given me some ideas. I'd like to see where these papers end up!

Hi, I am Britta from Bavaria/Germany. I am a passionate Junk Journaler (since july 2022) and love to colour my own papers in many different ways to use them for collages in my books. The books have different formats from tiny minis to large flapbooks. I started to use gel prints but am not yet satisfied with the results. So, if you could show some opportunities on that subject in your charming and entertaining way, it would make me really happy (such as using noodles in your other video, for example 😃. Thank you Airam! Mostly I create collage (sometimes with weaving), but I love the idea of using them in paper mâché 💜 Creating bowls or other vessels is a very creative idea - have you done that?

@@PaintedPaperStudio not yet but there are only so many weaving projects you can do so I'm thinking about bowls made out of paper or some type of necklace....IDK. Maybe even quilling. Beautiful work you do. I find it so relaxing and my job is high stress.

Hi Jackie. My brayer seems to give off a line or several lines when making the original or ghost print. I assume it is the brand of brayer (inexpensive one). Can you recommend a brayer or perhaps tell me why this occurs? I was disappointed to say the least. Thx in advance for your guidance

Hi Trini! Great question, and that's frustrating for sure. I primarily use the soft rubber brayers from Speedball, and I very rarely have the "line" issue. However (before you give up on your current brayer), have you tried adjusting the amount of pressure you're using - that can make a big difference. I've also heard of people using sandpaper on the edges of the brayer to "soften" the lines. I haven't had the courage to try it though 😂. There is a link to the exact brayer I use in the description.

Sandpapered the edges of the old Brayers and they work MUCH better and I also ordered a Speedball so I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s studio time!
