Creating a mixed media color study is one of my favorite ways of procrasti-creating - you know, the time you spend creating something simple when you’re not feeling particularly creative.
Well today is that kind of day.
The great thing about this type of procrastination is that it can do so much for your learning of color, and how to use it in mixed media art.
I keep a separate art journal for my color studies so that I can always find and reference them when I need them.
I’ve learned some VERY important things from my color studies, and I share them in this video.

Hello Jackie, nice to see you in your studio again. Hope you had an inspiring and happy time in Portugal. ✏✒📖 I like to do colourswatching whenever I purchased new colours. For example acrylic paints with metallic shimmer or pastel versions. That helps me to remember what I have and is a relaxing way to move a brush, or sponge or some printing tool. I like to combine it with mark making. I ´m afraid, I´m not always 😇 as systematical as you are. Which of course leaves me puzzled sometimes, how or from where this or that colour sprang onto my paper 🪅🌈👻☺ But in the end I don´t really mind. Late night greetings from Bavaria, Britta

Britta - swatching with brand new materials is so much fun, and I would imagine that combining it with mark-making takes the exercise to a new level. Thanks for the idea - I'll have to give it a try 😍

Susan - I agree; it can be confusing, and I rarely do it perfectly - it's just fun to explore a limited color range. 💜

Jackie, I found your channel yesterday and have obsessively watched about a dozen of your videos so far! You are so inspirational and uniquely creative! One question? Why do you use your Gelli plate for a palette? Did I miss your explanation somehow? I am obsessed with Gelli plates and own about 2 dozen of them in varying sizes, including 2 of the huge 16" x 20" size that I've never even taken out of their boxes due to feeling too much "preciousness" about using it! I need to get over myself and just use the darn thing!! I am also very encouraged (by you) to allow a few of my plates to get super grungy, too! Love those pulls you get from your very dirty plate! Thank you so much for your videos!!

Oh my goodness, Deanna, thank you for such kind words, and welcome! I have gel plate inventory envy right now - 2 dozen *swoon*!!! I could hang out with you all day getting those plates dirty and grungy 😂 But to answer your question about why I use the plates as palettes, it's because I see opportunity everywhere. When I use a plate this way, I always know that I can do pulls at the end and that those pulls will harmonize with whatever colors I used that day. The other reason is that I tend to use all the paint I put down that day, as opposed to a normal palette, where I don't feel bad walking away from it and letting it dry out (missed opportunities). Finally, use those giant plates - they feel lonely! 😂 So glad you're here. 🥰

Thank you, Jackie, for explaining your process in detail, although after watching every video you've posted to date, I have your process deeply embedded in my gray matter!! I have so many plates for a couple of reasosn, #1 being my iexcessive impatience! I can'r stand to wait for a split second once I've started printing, so I always have a clean plate to work on! Secondly, once I start a session I usually use a few different sizes, so I need a bunch of plates! Lastly,, I ordered some gel plates from Temu, 1 plate in each size, as I wanted to compare their less expensive plates with Gelli Art and Gel Press, and Temu accidently shipped 4 or 5 extra size 8" x 10's and a few 6" x 6", which weren't on my order, so happy freebies!!@@PaintedPaperStudio
