You're a blessing to youtube, mate. I'm just getting back into the game after a 15 year hiatus. Have worked with people all up and down the country but never with anyone as thorough as yourself. As someone else commented, if I were to price for all this work, most clients wouldn't want to pay for it, but there we go. If they're happy to, it's great to see how it should be done. Painting's about 5% of the job!

Hi thank you so much for all your videos and for sharing your knowledge in the trade. I'm a P & D student level 1 City & Guilds. I am in the process of doing my sisters spare room as a "let's see how long it will take me and what I could charge in future" the walls were lined and painted. The walls are bad, bellows, paint peeled in places and lots of holes. I have filled, sanded, reclined with 1200 and two coats of elmulsion. I have seams that are not stuck, wall still uneven, the wall looks crap!! After 4 days of work. Do I need to strip and start again?? Feeling very disheartened 😔 your advise would be much appreciated thanks Natalie

Just done a job where I lined a wall with 1200 grade paper and used beeline ready mixed paste. Paper stuck lovely to the wall once dried out but did have a few hairline seams. So gave it its first coat of slightly thinned valspar emulsion and allowed to dry. Then filled the seams with toupret powder filler... usually use poly cell but had this to hand. Sanded down once dry and gave it a second coat of valspar Matt emulsion. Looked perfect 👌 2 days later seams have reappeared... seams were stuck down solid with paste so no lifting areas. Just wondering if you have any knowledge on what it could be. Forgot to mention I did mix a hard stop filler using the paint also like in your videos. I’m wondering if it’s down to the filler or maybe room temperature? If I’ve done something wrong please let me know as I’m interested to find the cause! Cheers mate. Your videos are truly very helpful to the seasoned decorator like myself haha!

Thanks.. Have had the same problem myself... and I think it's down to the thickness of lining paper... soaking time is very important the thicker lining you use... it has to be well soaked and lots of paste. Then your joints have to be tight... if not and you fill they will need a second fill and possible three coats of emulsion... did a job last week and took my time. soaked for over 10 minutes then spent longer hanging it... to make sure the joints where super tight.... when the customer came in they asked if I'd painted the walls... you could see no joints... then when I painted the lining hardly anything should up...

Excellent tutorials buddy. I could do with some advise please. I stripped back a wall, filled and levelled out the obvious areas that needed it and now I’ve lined with with 1400. I’ve noticed inset areas where the wiring channel for the light switch would be, from the switch to the ceiling. I’ll painting emulsion on top of this like you have done on this clip. I am tempted to try the technique you have used here too, but I am concerned about the texture difference between the levelled area and the lining paper, will one look smooth and the other even more smooth? Thanks and keep the quality tutorials coming.

I just spent 4 days stripping, sanding, filling and generally prepping my living room. The walls were in a bad state so I'm tomorrow going to hang my first ever wallpaper - in this case, I have 1200 lining paper, I'm starting to think I should have got 1400. To be fair, the walls are shonky but it's a victorian house, so expectations are that you'll see a bit of shonk. Alas, I don't have a spirit level, so I'm gonna have to hang virtically as there's still some lines left from the previous wallpapering lol. I wonder, given I'm painting, not wallpapering over this, will the vertical approach make any difference? P.S. Great videos, very thorough and actually very relaxing to watch :) Thank you!

Hairline cracks appeared in dot and dab skimmed plasterboard walls, six months after completion. The cracks are from top to bottom and are located where the boards are joined. No other cracks are evident and the boards are perfectly flat on their surface. The cracks have not continued to widen after a further three years and in all other regards, the walls are perfect. It’s such a pity that the cracks spoil what is a really good job. Would you recommend widening the cracks slightly and using hard stop filler to make good. I have considered using lining paper to achieve a really good surface that with hopefully ensure that the cracks will not reappear going forward.

Noted ,we do normally because sometimes you can’t see the defects until you’ve coloured the wall,,I was just saying if the defect was so noticeable before decorating then use my method . On a different subject,do you find the chaulks troublesome nowadays,we find the modern emulsions craze and crack on them,so we have to zinsser bin them before emulsioning. Here in the USA, we'd probably just use Sheetrock joint filler; it seems to work on everything. I like this approach better than re-plastering ; the tensile strength of the paper will help contain future cracks. This type of filling is also useful for painting wallpaper, which is worth doing if the surface underneath would get wrecked in the process of removing it; I like to go over the seams with mesh & thin mud too.

It means you can see a patch on the wall where the paint has soaked in more especially over filler. It can happen if you go back to touch up after a short time as the paint has been drying and it shows where you tried to touch up.
