Artemis by DaVinci my contain the same pigments as Daniel Smith's Moonglow but these are definitely two different colors. In the video we will be mixing Artemis by DaVinci and then getting a look at how Moonglow and Artemis differ. Will you mix it, buy it, or pass altogether?

Avoiding over-mixing/brushing on the paper will help granulating. Brushing tends to work the heavier pigment into the paper. Also--much less pigment and more water help granulation, as does dripping, spritzing or sprinkling water. This was a good vid. Thanks!

For my DIY mix, I use PR209 (Daniel Smith Quin coral) instead of pr177. Several utubers have tested the lightfastness of moonglow and Artemis, and they are not lightfast. The red pigment fades out and leaves it as a pale bluish gray.

I have seen the moonglow tests but missed any on Artemis specifically. At least we can mix our own versions. I find Artemis to look like it has more Viridian in the granulation and stronger reds coming through in the washes vs Moonglow. Both are beautiful.

I make it with DaVinci permanent Alizarin Crimson which is a very crimson red PV19.

I have also had good success with PR209. I use PR209 from M. Graham, their 209 is just Quin Red. Their PG18 is also the best of the best.... their Viridian is so much juicier and more pigmented then other brands. Mixing a moon glow with MG works very well. Also got an interesting result with their Maroon Perylene PR179. The chroma on PR179 is a lot lower so you don't really get the same red glow... you don't need much of it to neutralize the Viridian so you end up with a more PG18 dominated mix. I am sure a PV19 Quin Rose would also work out well.

PR177 isn't light-fast 1. It's fugitive. I wish they would change it to PR122.

Yes, or a red like PR264 that I shared last week when I was mixing Alizarin Crimson. That is what replaced the DS Carmine on my palette. The color would be just slightly different but I think still beautiful and it would be lightfast. Now Davinci says this one (Artemis) does have an excellent lightfast rating and I personally have not seen or conducted any independent tests that show otherwise. However, we know it to be the case with Moonglow and I think that could benefit from the change as well. At least we can mix ourselves something similar that we will know is lightfast.

It is so strange. I have had this color in my palette for over a year and now it is getting super difficult to find to purchase. I LOVE IT!!! It seperated into more pinky when you use it loosely. Use a lot of water and do not overmix. Just let it do its thing. Every time I have used it, I get noticeable more compliments on my artwork. I think it’s the pigment that is so eye catching.

For my biggest question, I had to wait for the end because I had to see it for myself. (How does Artemis compare to Moonglow? Lord, I don’t care if it is fugitive!) Perhaps the experience of a color, the original color is grounded in time and is experienced by the eye of the painter. I sometimes end up in the process over the product camp when it comes to watercolor and the pigments used. I’m ok with keeping my work in a sketchbook in this part of my art journey…thank you Angela for giving me the courage to experiment….I’m off to dig up some of my many color pallets…it’s about time- I must be feeling better.

You won't hear any negative comment from me about collecting colors. lol IMO there are far worse things we could choose to collect. My collection also gets used and does not just sit taking up space on a shelf, not that there's anything wrong with collections that do. I think you will love seeing the differences between the two. They have the same pigments but definitely again IMO look and react quite differently. Both are beautiful.

Yes, Artemis! I 1st saw a KZfaq video 3 years ago by Kimberly Crick Art. She created a look alike by replacing the PR177 with a Quinacridone PV19 closest to the red color. Also using the best Veridian by MGraham . Turned out more better than DaVinci and Daniel Smith's version. However neither Moonglow or Artemis is a color that I use. It's not a favorite.

They are certainly interesting colors, I do like them, but there are plenty of grays out there that are more lightfast. I don't mind the two but I do reach for other grays long before I reach for Moonglow. In a sketchbook though, they are both amazing.

I found my Moonglow separated less than the Artemis did on the paper. They need a very wet wash to do that on the page. Still it never looks as good as it does drying on my ceramic palette. Think it needs a non porous surface for that.
