Are mixing monitors different than mastering monitors?
Yes and no. I’ve been to a lot of mastering studios where they have very expensive monitors but they’re also the same very expensive monitors that I’ve seen in some very expensive studios where people mix.
One of the best, most exciting experiences I’ve had mastering was to have Bob Ludwig master The Fray’s second album. I flew out to Portland, Maine and I sat in a room with Bob while he mastered their second record.

The first time I recorded at Sonica in Atlanta they had a whole wall of guitar amps of every kind. The engineer asked me what I wanted to play through and I pointed to a little brown tolex Fender Vibrolux. He said, "Yea, that's the money tone!" Now all I want is a Vox AC15, so things change.

One of the better, if possible, sessions Warren. I particularly believe informing "the community" to depend on their ears, and not what the stinking waveform looks like, is the best lesson of all. It has served no small number of our heroes forever, but it doesn't seem to ring true with far too many today. Thanks for all your contributions.

@ronbynum7304
@ronbynum7304 6 жыл бұрын
SirEggbertfartalot - Don’t fret about missing a few frequencies due to age. Since you’ve been “critically listening” for ages, your mind makes up for what you think your ears can’t hear any longer. I learned that from the guy who invented the Distressor, Dave Durr, at an AES conference a few years ago. Besides, consider geniuses like Al Schmidt, my friend Geoff Emerick, and myriad other “older” engineers who keep creating magic despite the natural hearing loss of high frequencies.

Hi Warren, Thank you for sharing this video! My recent purchase lead me to give it a view. I just received my NS10Ms and P2200 today. After reading the manual and searching the web I still feel uncertain about connecting my mixer to the P2200. My mixer has 1/4” and PIN 2 hot/ PIN 3 cold outputs. The amp has 1/4” and unbalanced XLR inputs. Aren’t 3 pin XLR cables balanced? I think if I plug in the XLRs into the mixer and amp something bad will happen. Will you please explain what I should do in order to connect them correctly?

Hey Warren, I was looking at the join page for the Academy, you had mentioned for a short time we could join for a cheaper price for monthly. I could only find the option to pay for an entire year. Am I missing something? I would like to try for a month first being as I have a good amount of knowledge already, and I wanted to make sure it was at a sufficiently high level before I committed for a year. Thanks 🙏

Wouldn't have thought of micing directly opposite on an amp speaker. That's very interesting. On the topic of amps, actually, what are your thoughts on solid state amps? I'm currently using a Boss Katana-50, and while I like it, I'm always mildly worried about not using that "truly alive" tube sound.

In the analog world, a high pass filter with a very sharp cutoff will ring (and that resonance can be good or bad). So, 6db per octave or 12db per octave is about the max. I haven't researched the digital filters (except from listening), but it seems that you can cut at 24db per octave without any ill effects. How do you like the slopes of your cutoffs? Gentle or Hard?

A quick research shows that Bob Ludwig uses EgglestonWorks Ivy Signature monitors-which he took part developing with EgglestonWorks. Around 55,000 euro each. But hey, they go down do 13 Hz according to specs. Something for the bassheads to drool for. I find some master engineers prefer using "hifi" speakers instead of active monitors. I believe the EgglestonWorks speakers e.g. are probed to the high end consumer market. (Hifi market being a completely-yet very interesting-discussion to have on another forum I guess...

Regarding monitors, I know you have said not to use generic HiFi speakers, and in general I agree. But what about old "good" speakers like, (just 1 example), Kef reference 104 ab's ? I know they were used in some (maybe smaller) studios in the UK back in the day (1970's -80's), along with old Tannoy's and Heybrook's. A re-cap is usually all they'd need to get back to near enough factory spec. The drive units are usually still fine after nearly 50 years ! (IF they've been looked after). Some of those old REAL High Fidelity speakers were rather accurate, especially the Reference ones. They were designed not to add or remove anything to/from the sound source. Coupled with a 50 watt per channel amp, would be ok I think, if you're sensible at home ? Would a pair of modern lower priced, powered 5" or 6" monitors really be better (especially the low end without a sub) ? Sorry, I'm just an old fart, tightwad, who'd rather recycle / re-purpose if possible. I don't want to open a can of worms, I'm just interested in your opinion. For the younger generation just getting started, I'd say stick with Warren's Advice, get powered monitors, A) it's easier, and B) you get a warranty. My question is more of an older guy's curiosity thing.

Awesome FAQ’s 😎 it’s really very simple. Gentle High Pass is your friend. If you don’t understand that you ain’t a mixing engineer. Sure, you won’t need to high pass everything but if you have a lot going on, high passing clears up the low end and creates room for the Kick & Bass. If you have read this, join Produce Like A Pro Academy to learn properly. I have 😎

I have a question (and it isn't about your hair or a vaguely sexual pun). Could there be a potential fix, in these newfangled "bone-conduction" headphones, to the age-old conundrum of vocalists having to either track with headphones that make it hard to hear themselves, or with monitors that make for a lot of bleed into the vocal tracks? Basically, these headphones go on your cheekbones or the bones behind your ears, transmitting the sound to your eardrums without blocking your ears the way regular headphones do. They are marketed as a safety thing for people who operate forklifts, or as a convenience for people work in busy offices where they need to hear stuff, and most are bluetooth, but I think panasonic makes a wired set for remarkably cheap, cheap enough that I'd get a pair exclusively for that application if it would work. Thoughts?
