Glenn Fricker is a known proponent of natural sounding drums. He chooses to mix without drum samples and advocates for human performance. When you hear his drum sounds you'll see why.
In this excerpt you will see Glenn's signal chain for one of two microphones he uses to mic the snare drum. He goes through the plugins he uses to create a fat, punchy snare drum that sounds great in the track.

Agreed. Want a great drum sound? Get a great player. They know how to play consistently. Nothing will drive your day crazy more that a guy who can't hit the Drum in the same spot for the Back Beat. But you also in most cases want a Kit that's well tuned and together mechanically with no loose rattling or squeaky hardware and heads that aren't beat to hell. That goes a long way.

I appreciate this entire video quite a bit, especially because I also use 3 mic's on the snare and a trigger for side-chain gating (Sm57 and NT-5 held in phase on the top with a Wilkinsons clip , and a CAD 411 on the bottom exactly opposite angled) and until this I never thought of sending the bottom snare signal without a gate for ghost notes. Cool trick! Thanks!

How to mix great snare: 1. Have great snare 2. Have a great drummer 3. Have the drummer play perfectly. 4. Mic the snare any way you want, as long as it doesn't clip. 5. Done , great snare in the mix.
@XiyuYang
@XiyuYang 4 жыл бұрын
You need to tune the snare, maybe to the song, proper mic selection, proper mic placement, isolation when needed, take care of phase alignment etc etc, you're simplifying this way too much lol.

Hey Glenn, Have you thought about going through your studio rack gear for your viewers? I only ask, because I see off to your left in this video you have quite a few add ons on the bottom rack, and I've always been curious how those actually hook up and are utilized in a mixing scenario. I've seen them sold piece by piece on websites like musicians friend, sweet water, etc, but I've never seen anyone explain how they are installed and are used in a real time scenario. Thanks for the videos! Cheers from the US!

Nice one. I got the full course and it was well explained. I'm almost finished my mix and I'm not using a lot of compression on individual tracks but liking a bit of bus compression to bring it all together. I don't have much experience in mixing jazz-y tracks and I think I will need to automate some of the compression because of the dynamics of the track.

At 2:02 you're really getting into Ludwig drugs? They must be good! Bottom mic does sound papery. Did you flop the polarity on it? I do on mine and man, what a difference when you combine..
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, he printed the bottom snare with the polarity flipped. Ultimately the Drummer has control over the snare sound and obviously someone as talented as Matt Starr should have control over it! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

Hey Glenn or Warren... Where was this tracked? It sounds like Warren's snare/room, correct? Anyway, think I'm going to pick this one up and go for a more 'traditional progressive' sound than Glenn's got going on here.. We'll see where that goes, if the raw tracks are flexible enough for that, (hope so).. I guess I'll find out...If not, I may have to mix in some **shutter** samples...haha..

Why does the waveforms looks so limited ? Did someone put it thru DrumLeveler before and not tell us ? And i get a more natural sound with the help of samples, than this totaly overcompressed drums. And in modern metal, in the end, the drums sounds like Midi anyway.

So many people bitching in the comments "boo hoo the drums are overcompressed, no life left". Tell you what - go buy the tracks and outmix Glenn. Then you'll have the right to bitch. But that won't happen, cause if you were able to do that, you'd be out there making great records instead of dropping salty comments on youtube. Go get a life.

Do i love glenn's mix? I'm not too crazy about it, i think the song might need a bit more gentle processing. But it's a solid mix nontheless, so i'm not insulting him or trying to discredit him as a mixer. Not being a cunt goes a long way, guys!
