This mix is mind blowing. I found out late that he passed away. So sad. I return to this video series often to try and figure out how he got such amazing sounds. He was on another lever and seemed so humble. RIP a true inspiration.

Oh man, its so upsetting to learn that he had passed. Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is one of my favorite records and further, I just learned that he had produced and mixed Tourist History by Two Door Cinema Club, which likewise has absolutely brilliant production. RIP Philippe

Even the best emulations don’t quite have that upper midrange sweetness that an SSL desk has....though UAD is getting very close.

He was speaking about the SSL channel strip (that has, filters, compressor, expander/limiter and eq) when he changed his mind from the SSL bus Comp to the one included in the channel strip. And yes, for mixing a good record you need much more than just a console

Actually- He's summing the mix to mono. This is done often in mixing because something can sound great in stereo but introduce phase cancellation in mono. As much as we want to listen to stereo mixes, most of the time we hear hit songs it's not perfectly between stereo speakers, and we generally get a mono-ish mix. You want to make sure the mix sounds great on a clock radio as well as in a studio, and everything in between.

Yep- looks like it's the "external to monitors" button. It's an analog console, so I'm not sure where the rough mix would be coming from, or why it would sound mono. Maybe it's a mix fed from pro-tools. But getting to the detail, I guess the question is about the "knob", not the button anyway, which controls the level of the main control room monitors.

@@ozymandias2726 Wow, I knew he had an accidental fall but not until reading this did I ever know the circumstances of _how._ Thank you, I'm glad to finally know what happened. What an awful tragedy. It's hard not to ask "what if?" in regard to what he would have worked on coming off the heels of the incredible work he did on the _Phoenix_ record and the rightful recognition he received from it.

Pan tracks to the left and right and make your way to the middle of the spectrum. Don’t stack all tracks exclusively on either end but blend them on to the stereo spectrum.
