Just to clarify in simple terms because everyone is asking: "The Board" is the console the physical mixing board with the faders and knobs. "In the Box" is your software DAW i.e. Protools, Logic, FL Studio/Fruity Loops, Reason, Studio One etc.

Great Tips, As Allways. I would compare UVI plates to any reverb on insane mode its the cleanest to my ears by far. only downside is the simple filter. it would be more flexible if it was multiband. but still the reverb i find myself going back to.

I am a great defender of hardware mixes, full OTB setup etc like i have myself. But these days I have been listening a bit to MixedByAli's work, and also Leslie Brathwaite's (who mixes ITB with UAD, protools and Symphony alone). Both sound great of course, they are magicians. But the amount of clarity in Leslie mixes really hit me hard... I don't know if Leslie sums analog from the Symphony - but it made me believe that nowadays a good digital setup with top DSP is as every bit as powerful soundwise as the classic SSL + analog outboards, possibly surpasses in many aspects. Another story is if it is a different experience to use one or the other, but soundwise... damn, digital is the present already.
@nwh3rd3 жыл бұрын
Leslie does use a Dangerous 2 bus for summing, but everything else is completely in the box.

Question for you. Do you think without all the extra studio equipment you can make a radio ready song with just plugins and a good mic?
@Byronic191346 жыл бұрын
Bruh Ali made a classic, Section 80, with a pirated FL Studio and MP3 beats. If you got a good mic you can make radio ready songs in audacity with free plugins. I'm a let you in on a little secret and that's all these streaming services, and soundcloud and MP3s cut off after 15,000khz so all these extra expensive condensor mics and great equipment aren't as a big of a deal because nobody is really listening to true high fidelity music anyway. Kanye was re recording and finishing Ye literally like an hour before the listening party in Ozone 8 i think lol.

So he's saying that he puts all his vocals, even his lead, in stereo??? because s1 is a stereo plugin... or does he bus them to a bus that's in stereo while the tracks remain mono?... I'm just trying to understand which tracks remain in mono and those that don't. Thanks.
@blaker48073 жыл бұрын
All of the vocals remain in mono but you can still put stereo effects on a mono signal. But, Yeah.. probably a bus, because all buses are stereo anyway

in the box is solely in the computer , they call it box because of the shape of them old computer monitors *Edit - now that term refers to mixing solely using a computer/laptop and plugins as opposed to using outboard gear.

In the box doesn't refer to the computer it refers to the interface you use to send the signals to the computer. They are usually box shaped. Like for example the Mbox from avid. Or the hilo from lynx.

Ali's cool & no doubt talented AF but I've noticed he's very frugal with concrete knowledge for example: giving youngin's in the game your vocal chain is huge, I guess his argument is to learn it yourself and use whatever technique works and sounds best for you but I've found that when you have a clear idea of what the pro's use and what settings they have set they can really learn why they have them set to those specific settings ... in person I bet he's very generous with info but literally all the interviews I've tuned into he gives generic answers to specific questions to dodge giving the "secrets" out..

Don't listen to this chump. Step 1. If you have a condenser mic you're going to want to plug it in and out several times while Phantom power is turned on to get it warmed up. Step 2. Have the singer sing into it but make sure they avoid using their diaphragm at all costs. A nice coca cola always helps get the voice ready. Step 3. You're gonna want to take 1khz and raise it by at least 12db to get that nice Blink 182-tone. Step 4. Avoid compression at all costs. Real singers can get it right without all this studio trickery. Step 5. Slap an emulation of a concert hall on there and blast that shit. And, done! Good job champ. Did you mix that, or was that Chris Lord Alge himself?
@sladesladeslade5 жыл бұрын
