If you ever caught a police drama on telly in the 90s and some bad news was about to be delivered to the family you can guarantee one of these was going to pull up outside... "Can we have a word inside, it's not good news I'm afraid"

For me the high watermark of a modern car. Miles better than what was before without the levels of technology that consign a modern car to the scrappy.

Mk3 Cavalier was probably the last good family sized car Vauxhall made. Nicer to drive than a Sierra and far better engines , made for a spacious, non offensive, fairly reliable car. Good review and a decent asking price too

After owning both the Cavalier and the Mondeo i was more swayed towards the Cavalier, so much so i had over 20 of them threw the years. My favourite was the 2000GSi, it was a brilliant car!!!

Used to drive one as a taxi, diesel engine, it was quite hard wearing, front discs and pads used to wear alot, but it was doing a lot of mileage

Another great review. One of the downsides of working for a motor manufacturer, as I did, is that you tend to focus on any negative aspects of competitive brands and models in order to highlight your own marque's superiority. It's therefore nice to get the sense of what these cars were all about - something your reviews manage without the boring barrage of performance figures, measurements and specifications.

had a facelift 1.8GLS for a few years ate rear boxes and plug leads, other than that no bother at all. Only got rid after it was nicked the 2nd time and wasn't really repairable. Wife loved it I loved the fuel consumption.

My dad had an Isuzu engined K reg 1.7 cavalier diesel which he bought for £100 back in around 2005, that had been left for about a year in a car park and had been vandalised in that time, with a broken bumper and bent up wiper arms. He kicked the bumper back into place and put a couple of wiper blades on the thing and it cost less than a tenner to fix and it went straight through an mot. It was only bought as a stopgap as his 99 Citroen Xsara went all French and he needed something quick and he ended up keeping it couple of years and got rid of the Citroen by giving it to one of my younger brothers. He really regretted selling afterwards as the Isuzu engine is so reliable and it was so economical and comfortable and I borrowed it on numerous occasions and agree it was light years better than the Sierra and it just never went wrong and was never serviced. I think Rust advisories and a small knock finished it off a few years later after he sold it on and I remember a mate of his saying if you go for a diesel Vauxhall always plump for an Isuzu engined car.

Great video Mustard! I passed my driving test in an 80's 1.6 Sierra, my dad's car. I loved it. I had a mk2 Cavalier in the 80's. Nice car. Better spec than Sierra, but I thought the Sierra had the better gearbox. In the 90's I was buying new cars in this class. The best I had was a Xantia. Beautiful thing. I also enjoyed a Carina-E. I didn't consider Mondeo or Cavalier, because they were "rep-mobiles". I drove my boss's Mk3 with a 1.7L non turbo engine. It was frugal, but painfully slow. I had an A4 in 1997 (after I had rejected a "Friday" MGF) and have been driving German pretty much ever since.

You didn't mention the 1.4. Pure joy! You are right about the Vauxhall fuel economy though. I had a Carlton 2.0i. It did 40mpg plus. Incredible at that time for a car of that size.

It probably had the wide ratio gearbox. My friends mum had a MK3 Astra 1.6 Expression with the same gearbox and that did well over 40mpg.

Look at what this car replaced , (the mk2 super rust bucket, mk2s seemed rapid back in the day .) To me at the time compared to the mk2 the mk3 seemed revolutionary, considering as well there are a few very early ones on f plates out there . Im sad i missed this car i probably would have asked for a drive lol, ah so its allegro mans 👍👍👍. Than we had the mk1 vectra , not a bad car either till they created the mk2 vectra aka the barge . I could fit a mk1 vectra windscreen in 15 mins back in the day from start to finish . Mk3 cav there is a secret latch when taking the door pannel off towards the back of the door near the door pocket . God you can tell ive had plenty of sleep today 😂😂😂. Loved this review paul . Oh well at least vauxhall had started laquering cars by then , in the eighties vauxhall paint was terrible for fading .

The 1.8L engine was not available on the Earlier models (Same for the Sierra). It was a change in company car tax brackets that brought the 1.8L engine with it. Originally there was 2.0i and 1.6L (non 'i' ) The Diesel and the 1.8L arrived after 3 or so years of production.

Cavalier? Mondeo? Laguna? Surely the only wise choice would have been Rover 200! Another Allegroman quality car. 👍 I had a same-era same-style Astra which was an all round reliable and solid car, as I am sure will be this Cavalier. I think it a steal at £1000. Much applause for Allegroman! I can confirm, there is absolutely no danger whatsoever of him even remotely sounding anything like Boaty!😄

I’d have that in a heartbeat as my daily run around. I had a Sierra back in the day and hated the thing - nasty, unreliable piece of crap it was. I replaced it with a MK2 Cavalier, which was a revelation- a far superior car in every way. I moved on to a MK3 Cav 8v SRi which was even better. It was quick and the standard Recaros were probably the most comfortable seats ever. After it got rear ended by an escort I got another, but this time the SRi 150 16v - definitely best of the bunch.

They also did a 1.7 non turbo diesel which was dire; almost dangerously slow. A colleague had a 1994 2.0 16v in LS spec as a company car which although quite basic, was a cracking engine. The 1.8 was by far the more popular motor though.

I drove my boss's 1.7 non-turbo diesel back in the mid 90's. It was the worst thing I have ever driven - before or since. I was happier than he was when he changed it for a Peugeot 406 Turbo Diesel.

Had several Cavaliers Early mk3 and later mk3 from 1.6 /1.8 and (2.0GLSi) the 2.0 was my favourite, I remember testing a mk1 Mondeo vs This Cavalier and the Cavalier was a much better drivers car, had a 2.0i Vectra after also x2 Rover 600s later (Rovers were a different animal) I now have a 3rd Generation Mondeo petrol.

That looks nothing like our US 'Chevy' Cavaliers (1981+2005). I do have 18 Cavaliers of my own from the first 3 Generation's of this car. They're still very common on the roads here and of course they don't rust around here. My favorites are the '81+'83 cars. Have a few of the "Performance" Z/24 versions as well. Not bad cars these.

Evening all Please help before I end up scrapping my mk3 cav 1995 1.8 single injection.... 😂 I have a miss fire at idle. Changed everything ignition wise, new coolant sensor, new idle control valve, new 02 sensor, new maf sensor...... Along with the misfire I also get a bad smell of fuel every now and again! I am steering close to getting the injectior changed it's only one :) I have also checked for air leaks....please note it misfires from cold and normal running temps. Also changed the fuel filter :/ please if anyone can help it would be much appreciated!!
