There is a special trick to remove those two near-impossible 10mm sump bolts on a VAG engine, which are blocked by the flywheel. There's a cut-out in the flywheel which allows you access to get a socket onto these bolts. Lots of videos show how to remove the sump but don't mention this trick!
Other guides say that you can just about access them using an 5mm hex key with a spherical head, but I've found this often rounds the bolts very easily. So this method is much better as it allows you to get a proper socket onto the bolts.
Hope this helps someone else!

Man, I have watched many videos, showing so stupidly how much this job is easy, without showing the true agony of removing those bolts, which rendered so many commenters to fail, whilst trying to take them out. yet thousands of subscribers and likes, and so many comments were not answered asking about the tools or ways to take those two stubborn bolts out, I have to tell you, you deserve thousands of subscribers just for this video alone, thank you very much for the info, and you got yourself a new subscriber.

I know right? So many videos that say remove the 16 something bolts and then remove the pan. Ya easier said than done. Some videos mention the two shit bolts but never show how they remove them.

You’re a lifesaver. I hit my sump this morning after skidding on ice. Had to fix straight away as needed the car and couldn’t believe I stumped by these bolts. Without your video I would have had to pay a mechanic to reveal the secret. Thanks mate.

I remember changing the sump on an octavia a few years back and those bolts breaking my heart, had a different video just pop up that I had watched at the time just there and watched it just for fun. Your video came on after and I wish I had seen this years ago, I remember cutting up a perfectly good Allen key to do this idiotic job last time

In my mk4 2.0 5 speed there was no cutout. Great info but some people are still going to need to go buy a set of spherical head alan sockets, thats what did the trick for me

In the end I got them out, using the method in the video, and by borrowing the smallest 1/4" socket (with the least blunt end) and thinnest 1/4" extension I could find, and - crucially - tapping in a 3/8" extension into the sump hole next to the 1/4" extension to keep it perfectly aligned as I turned it, and pressing upwards very hard as I turned. A very difficult job and the bolt heads got wrecked. I think it's worth using those tools and the method in the video from the outset. I started with a 10 mm 3/8" socket and 3/8" extension and NOT using the method in the video, and the bolt heads got so damaged a nightmare began. I know that they were torqued correctly - I put them in with a torque wrench a few weeks ago when the flywheel was off. Tip: Many replacement crankshaft seals are plastic, so don't use a jack under the wrench to hold the socket on the bolt head because if the bolt turns the plastic could crack. I've put new bolts in now, at only 12 Nm instead of 15 Nm to try to make the future better. I hope that works out.

I don't know for sure how different that engine is from the PD engine in this car, but I would imagine if you are trying to remove the sump and can't get at these bolts that the flywheel cutouts will be there

There's an even handier way. Provided they're the original bolts there should be a 5 mm hex in the centre of the bolt. I used a good quality ball end allen key and a small piece of pipe as a lever. Was afraid the ball-end might snap off but the bolts weren't overly tight.
@JSB2500
@JSB2500 Жыл бұрын
That didn't work for me. The ball of hex key just broke off. That's was even using the technique in this video to keep it as straight as possible.
@TheBlaert
@TheBlaert Жыл бұрын
@@JSB2500 yeah if they're a bit tight it may be an issue with a ball end. It's worth a try though. If one isn't going to loosen with a reasonable amount of force it'd be best to try the method in the video

@MorselsAndMotors
@MorselsAndMotors 3 ай бұрын
They are hex inside, has that rounded too? If so, you probably need one of those bolt remover sockets, that grip onto rounded bolts. Though I’m not sure they make them that small. I used some on locking wheel nuts where we didn’t have the key
