Shang Tsung’s betrayal was inevitable, and he even indirectly hints that out too. The only one who knew was Lord Liu Kang, which is why he spoke with Fujin before they were sent to the past. Everybody “dying” was intended by Liu Kang, so that he can ensure his possession of the crown.

Man the voice acting, the animation, the music, this is better than a movie.

The way Shang Tsung’s face lights up when he says “You let me win.” It’s so amazing he’s like “Awww buddy!!”

Assuming it is Cannon since Shang's was just "big bad won" whereas Liu's was something is coming next and since I lost track of who is alive, dead, missing, etc., I have no idea what to expect from NRS. I am content with the ending because Lui Kang grew as a character from being a rash hothead who couldn’t see the bigger picture in Mk9 to being a calculated, albeit sinister letting his friends die, strategist to save the timeline. He didn’t let emotions ruin his chance to save his friends since he can give them all better lives in a new timeline.
