The red area in the revs is there as an indicator to hold the needle between in order to fully warm up any V8! This guy knows that!

blue smoke from exhaust always equals blown rings or bad valves - ALWAYS - it happens when you, ehh, gun it all the time especially if the engine is cold. To all of you who say "nothing wrong with the car" maybe you should learn a bit about cars and mechanics - blue smoke = oil burn. There should NEVER be oil in the combustion chamber. Oil gets there via blown rings or most likely blown valve. Do not confuse blue smoke with a white smoke. White smoke is the evaporation from the cats (especially visible on the cold day)

@hdg82 as an AMG tech you should know that its a 63,6.2L v8 none turbo. Its a cold start and the cat has not been warmed up fully and the air pump can only do so much for cold start emissions

He isn't launching the car, he is just accelerating. These cars can handle that...

Coming from a Benz technician, this is not vapour as it does not disperse quickly (smoke lingers), it is not head gasket (we have no reported failures so far), it is in fact piston ring clearance, for which there is a document relating to superceded part numbers. There are reports of high oil consumption either due to incorrect running in (these cars have warning labels on the windscreen at new) or a faulty factory ring set.

steam can also be from the catalytic convertors, if a car has a rich fuel mixture, they produce a lot of water vapor coz they convert ( thus their name) the unburnt hydrocarbons but in this case its burnt oil smoke :P

@784plb My Slk 55 amg did the same only once on stock exhausts, looked more like unburnt fuel though, what exactly is it that comes out the exhausts? petrol smoke? oil? both?

P.S.2 Oil can penetrate into the combustion chamber through: worn piston rings, valve seals or head gasket. Another way oil enters the turbine through the seal and it is burned in the hot exhaust gas (blue, blue, blue..)

I work at a Mercedes Benz dealership, these 63 engines are large oil burners - we're constantly topping up customers cars! Probably due to free-revving the engine before proper running in (salesman or customer on test drives)

the engine-maker affixes a plaque engraved with his signature to the engine cover.....now go and find him :)

@Searayist man thats a cold country ... it is normal that the hot gas getting out the exhaust makes that smoke, it is not a dead engine ... its the same thing when you breath on a cold day and you see smoke getting out of your mouth. lengths ;)

@stm351 - I use ZMAX, it penetrates the metal and give superior lucrication, good for cold starts. I think his oil burning problem is beyond that though, rings more than likely are needed.

How can that be steam? I don't see how water could get into the exhaust and evaporate like that, or if it were in the combustion itself in which case that car wouldn't be moving much.

@TheSoundzUK - The blue smoke coming out of the tailpipes when it was started, you shouldn't see any of that, probably a ring leaking.
