6:48 At first glance, there are two possibilities on this play, neither of which was called by CB Bucknor. Either it is a live ball, or it is rule 5.06 (b) (4) (I), ball lodged in umpire's or catcher's equipment (considering that a ball caught and held by the umpire could technically be considered equipment). If it is a live ball, the runner is out at home on the tag. If the ball is considered lodged, then the runner gets home because he is allowed to advance to one base. But what I think Bucknor did here, and it does make sense, is rule 9.01, the umpire rules on a situation not specifically covered in the book. In this case, he essentially caught and hid the ball, basically hanging the runner out to dry. By sending the runner back to third base, he nullified the situation without unfairly favoring either side. And I think that was probably the best move.

From someone who doesn't know the rules, I just figured he called a dead ball because he interfered with the play.
@Wildcat2017
@Wildcat2017 Жыл бұрын
My first thought is he looked at this play and said "I have irreparably changed this play. An obvious out at the plate, turned into an easy safe because of interference by the ump, turned out because I called dead ball." At this point he likely is considering what the best way to rule this is and honestly sending the runner back to third is the most fair (although wrong) call since no matter how you rule live ball or ball lodged in equipment, you are essential deciding out vs run. Again, its wrong, but ultimately the most fair call and I agree with sending him back to third because that play just doesn't happen if you're not there.
@Jivvi
@Jivvi Жыл бұрын
@@Wildcat2017 that reminds of a play where the ball was hit straight down onto the plate and it looked like the umpire signalled foul, but he later said it was fair, and basically tried to say that when he put his hands up it was just a reflex because he was jumping back to get out of the way of the ball. Anyway, the bases were loaded, and none of the runners moved because they thought it was a foul ball, so the catcher threw to third, third threw to second, and second threw to first for triple play. All the runners were just standing there like "but it was foul", and the triple play stood. I'm pretty sure he actually did signal foul intentionally, but realised he was wrong and tried to change it, and hoped no one would notice.

By rule the play at @2:00 is an infield fly and should have been called when the ball was drifting back into the field of play.
@davecarsley8773
@davecarsley8773 2 жыл бұрын
How is it an infield fly if not only could the fielder not catch it with "ordinary effort", but indeed expended _extraordinary_ effort and _still_ couldn't catch it? There really isn't a "by rule" when it comes to infield flys. It's a judgment call completely at the umpire's discretion. That ump apparently didn't think that ball could be caught with ordinary effort, and given the outcome of the fielder's efforts to catch it, I'd say his judgment was right.
@hawthornehay9146
@hawthornehay9146 2 жыл бұрын
@@davecarsley8773 I know this is from a while ago, but infield flies are designed to be called anytime runners are on first and second and there’s a fly ball in the infield. It is a judgment call, and it could have gone either way here, but the entire point of the rule is to prevent that very thing from happening, regardless if was intended or not

3:17 someone please tell me the runner was awarded the base in that play. The reason that the runner didn't tag the base was because the baseman leg was in the way in "front" of the bag blocking the runner.
@christiankoch8442
@christiankoch8442 2 жыл бұрын
I would guess no because they were not running in the 3 foot lane on the foul side of the field. Rule states you need to run in that lane for the last half of the distance from home to first only stepping out on your last move to step on the base. He was in fair territory the whole time so it would not be the fielders fault... However that rules is used for determining if the batter runner interfered with the defense trying to make a play. Ask Close Call Sports for a better answer.
@eauhomme
@eauhomme 2 жыл бұрын
Should have been obstruction, runner safe at first. The runner clearly would have kicked the base had the fielder's leg not been there tripping him. Of course, calling it in real time is not easy.
@linollieum3742
@linollieum3742 2 жыл бұрын
@@christiankoch8442 Runner's lane only matters for Runner's Lane Interference, not for any other plays like tag plays at first, there was no throw on this play so it does not apply. I believe the umpire ruled that once the first baseman has possession of the ball, he is allowed to block the base. It's unfair since he shouldn't be able to just trip the runner to make him miss first, but according to the rules as long as he has the ball he can block the base.
@linollieum3742
@linollieum3742 2 жыл бұрын
@@eauhomme "Obstruction is the act of a fielder who, while not in possession of the ball and not in the act of fielding the ball, impedes the progress of any runner" There is no possible way to call this obstruction under any ruleset. Once the fielder has the ball he can block the base. Maybe there's a rule that can cover deliberately tripping the runner, but even then they might have ruled he was reaching his foot back for the base and not to trip. I do think it's patently unfair on this play though.

I totally agree - he was never even close to the bag. How did the 1st base umpire miss that one?
@eauhomme
@eauhomme 2 жыл бұрын
@@greenmanofkent Easy to miss, but that's why we have replay. He is focusing on the baserunner and the ball, and the plays are so close together that he needed to change his focus immediately on the tag, going from looking up at the play to looking down at the base. This is why the plate umpire should also be watching the play here. The proper positioning of the plate umpire (assuming nobody on third) is about 10 feet up the third base line looking at first, both to see fair/foul and also to see an odd play like that. He is not to make a call overturning the base umpire's call, but if the base umpire were to signal him or come to him for help after the manager asks, he could say "he missed the base and the runner is safe".

Now obviously going overboard is why that rule cant be applied (batters just doing whole twirls if a runner goes) but I just always feel like the batter should have the right to his full swing.

@shanemcfaddenable

There needs to be runners on 1st and 2nd in order for infield fly to be called. If there's only a runner on 1st, it's assumed that the batter-runner can avoid being doubled up because they are able to run to first. If the batter-runner in this case had done that, then Vargas wouldn't have let it drop.

@@shooting4star2023 Not correct. An infield fly has to have runners on first and second or bases loaded, with 0 or 1 out. In that case, whether the ball is caught or not, the batter is out if the ball can be caught with ordinary effort. With runners on first only or first and third, the fielder can allow the ball to fall, then turn the double play. However, if he intentionally touches and drops it, it is the "intentional drop" rule, ball is dead, batter is out, runners hold their bases.
@gustafsone
@gustafsone 2 жыл бұрын
@@shooting4star2023 This would not be a problem if the batters would actually hustle and run to 1st base not matter what when they hit a pop-fly ball. It really aggravates me how the majority of MLB batters will just assume they are out and watch the ball get caught. Except when it doesn't get caught, and then the opposing team can get a double-play. If the batter would just fucking run on a pop-fly, there would be a force out at 2nd, but the batter would be safe at 1st. But no, batter don't actually *want* to run anymore, so they just watch the double play happen. This isn't a rule problem, it's a player mentality problem!
