Grateful Dead Live at Fillmore East on February 11, 1970.
The Grateful Dead with Duane & Gregg Allman!
From "Searching for the Sound" by Phil Lesh:
Jerry says to Phil of the ABB on their way to this show: "make sure you check these guys out... they're kinda like us... They jam hard"
Phil was startled when he heard Duane's slide during Dark Star... Jerry hadn't told him anyone would sit in.
Gregg "slides onto the organ bench" during Spanish Jam.
"Peter Green from the Mac plugs in just as I'm pulling the music into the dominant minor ... he and Duane seem more comfortable in this space."
After the show, "I walk outside -- it's daylight, and snow is falling gently on the streets of New York... I grab Bob and Jerry in a group embrace: This is what it's all about."

This Dead/ABB show (search by date) is available to stream on the Internet Archive. Several recordings will show up... search the info in each one. Most will say "there are gaps or missing segments during Dark Star/Spanish Jam and Lovelight. This recording will say they are complete, patched from two different sources. There is software you can download to record streaming music on your computer to capture it. And there are hundreds and hundreds of other great shows!

You do know there's something vastly more substantial by adding Fleetwood Mac to the title. I don't think people realise how iconic it is. People don't realise the worth of Duane Allman and Peter Green playing together. Disappointing people don't realise what they're sitting on.

Saying this as a 23 year old guy born in '95 with eclectic musical influences: this is a treasure. Honestly brings a tear to my eye hearing The Dead, Allman Bros and some of Mac just jamming together. These are some of the finest musicians to ever walk the earth. The thought of Duane, Jerry and Peter playing together is the stuff of dreams, let alone having all the rest of the Dead, Gregg, Oakley... Was dickey there? This is a gem.

@@bluesriot2 One thing that always bothered me about this recording is that Owsley recorded everybody on the bill but Arthur Lee and Love, because he did not particularly care for their music. Peter Green "established" Fleetwood Mac long (Hypnotized and Oh Well) before Stevey Nicks showed up. Which I have NO COMPLAMAINT about, Stevey brings it. I still offer "Oh Well" as one of the best FM tunes? Especially as rendered by TP&THB in Gainesville. If Tom Petty covered your song, it meant more than something.

Duane feels in his soul that he has a special gift that was meant to shine amongst men, above all others. He knows his future. And yet he allows himself to meld with others, sublimatiing himself in deference to the creation of something greater. He doesn't have to play the star.Garcia the same. That is musicianship.

My response to Bill Walton's passing has been to listen to particularly outstanding Grateful Dead shows - and this one featuring ABB + Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac as special guests is one of the best. Alas, by the time I saw ABB and Mac, Duane Allman and Barry Oakley had passed away and Peter Green, Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer were long gone. Although both bands were still terrific, all aforementioned stalwarts proved irreplaceable.

Awesome share thanks. I never grow tired of this jam people. Like how you added an excerpt from Phil's book. Really enjoyed reading. My favorite part is him writing about the '95 Spring show in Philly PA. That Visions Jerry did is top shelf, watched it several times and moves my soul everytime. When Jerry sings the "howls in the bones of her face" part I get goosebumps ertime....

Max Grimme I think some people are gonna thumbs down anything the Grateful Dead does. I have no time for that. The Dead were one of the best bands in the history of Rock. Some people never gave their music a chance. They just assume they wouldn’t like it

Duane & Jerry were just kids. Playing for kicks. With no boundaries. My first 2 Dead shows were 4/16-17/83, Brendan Byrne, Steve Stills came out after space both nights - first night Black Queen - second night Love the One You're With And I never looked at - or thought of Steve Stills - the same way as I did after those two nights Because when you're trading licks with Jerry - whatever you think you know, or whatever you've done previously in your musical career - won't cut it. You either step up - or you go home 12 years, 188 shows , w the likes of Mick Taylor, Carlos Santana, Clarence Clemons, Branford, The Bangles, The Nevilles, Hot Tuna, Jorma, Steve Miller, etc..sitting in. I would have traded it all of those jams in ( with the exception of Love the One You're With & MSG 9/10/91 w Branford) to watch & listen to these 2, once in a gazillion lifetimes, guitar heroes, live, doing what they were both born 2 do: Pushing the envelope to places only they knew existed, with nothing but 6 strings on their backs

@@kingdomrhye1180”someone else” JFC. BERRY FUCKING OAKLEY. And, some accounts have it going that Phil sat down because Oakley took the bottom end away from Phil, because BO was one of the best blues bassists to ever pick up the instrument. To be clear I’m not here to start fights but I get pissed when I hear someone refer to BO as “someone else”.

Fil, thank you so much for your analysis of the late great Dickey Betts. I can tell you genuinely love what you do and your passion for music has fueled my love for music. I saw Dickey with his son Duane Betts in Great Southern in the early 2000s and it was a beautiful experience. Keep on rocking my friend! And if you ever come to Denver, I'll take you to a show at Red Rocks Amphitheater.

Joseph Jennings Mississippi native Franklin TN resident now many years..yessir I remember that Duane etching into the red clay between Vicksburg and Bovina on Interstate 20 early 70s when that stretch of road was new and fresh cut through those Loess bluffs. We had a camphouse at Lake Bruin Louisiana and a deer and duck lease near Steele Bayou so I drove that road from Jackson frequently. It lasted about 5-7 years....man I had not thought of that since I saw your post. I’m sitting out back under a starry night watching that close Mars orbit with my horses nearby my 18 year old son and I listening to this great Duane and Jerry and Peter works I frankly didn’t know about till now.... Amazing...I’m a Pigpen era deadhead which means it was a teens and college band for me but i still listen almost daily in my early 60s Thanks man made my night...truly what a great time to grow up
