In today's #antimlm video I discuss the infamous snake oil company Young Living and their deceptive practices. I dive into some cringey hun bot Facebook posts, talk about false claims made by distributers inflating the benefits of essential oils, and talk about the founder of Young Living, Gary Young, who is someone definitely worth examining...
What is an MLM? MLM stands for Multi-Level Marketing which is a network marketing style company that puts an emphasis on recruiting people underneath you to distribute products rather than selling the products to actual customers. This can create an array of problems, primarily being that the structure of a company like this is very similar to a pyramid scheme, which is illegal. Distributers are also pushed to try and recruit friends and family which leads to a falling out with friends and family most of the time. 90% of people who join an mlm company LOSE MONEY. Have you ever received a Facebook message from a distant relative or someone you haven't talked to in years asking if you'd like to "work from home" and "join their team"? this person was probably attempting to recruit you into their pyramid scheme company where you would likely lose money.

I had a panic attack at work one day. I was very stressed and about to quit for questionable business practices like sexual harassment and 15 hour shifts with no break. I had a lady come up to me and just put essential oils on my wrists and try to sell me young living whilst at work in the middle of a panic attack. If that’s not predatory I don’t know what it.

yeah, there are a few that do genuinely have medicinal value like clove is numbing for a tooth ache (chewing on a whole clove also works) but like 90% don't have any real medicinal value and they certainly shouldn't replace modern medicine. I'm all for using home remedies and natural and traditional medicine when it helps, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't go to the doctor. My mom has a small business selling essential oils that she buys bulk and mixes and bottles herself and the amount of misinformation she has to correct from customers is shocking. People will drink them with water and put them on their skin undiluted. I can think of maybe 5 essential oils that are mostly safe for skin but the rest of them can cause literal chemical burns and reactions. they are not diluted in water so putting a few drops in water and drinking it can cause internal chemical burns. No essential oil is safe to apply to a babies skin. Im all for using apple cider vinegar to clear a head cold and clove for tooth aches, plant medicine has its place, but you have to understand how to use them safely and you shouldn't think they're magic or something. go to the doctor when you need to, use plant medicine when its helpful.

@@keyoilslauramorrison9767 If their consultants spreading harmful misinformation is this widespread, it hardly matters what the company puts on their website. The distributors represent the company. They use independent consultants so that these people can go on and make false claims at their own peril, and the cowards sit back and claim no responsibility for their unethical marketing practices. When you fail to enforce basic things like "Don't claim oregano oil cures cancer" to the point that the FDA sends you a warning, your company is shady and unethical. Period.

My husband, a engineer, says this all the time. It is something we actually have fought about. I have extremely sensitive skin and MCAS. To avoid getting hives that swell, rupture, and scar, I have to stick to very specific cleaning products. The company green-washes and advertises as " No harsh chemicals" and my husband loses it. Hell, I just use it because, so far, it doesn't hurt my skin. That being said, clove oil is great for toothaches - you just need to make sure you are getting the oils from a reputable source - not an MLM.

No one in Y.L. is ever to make medical claims, it is against policies & procedures. Be aware, if you look at Pubmed.com, university hispitals & more, there are many studies that show certain oils are antiviral. Plants existed as a form of medicine for thousands of years & most Pharmaceuticals were created to mimic those properties, yet chemically altered so they could be patented. Can't patent nature. Also plants have less likely antibiotic resistance, because they're never the same from year to year, based on growing conditions.
@ambitiously_
@ambitiously_ 4 жыл бұрын
@@keyoilslauramorrison9767 pharmaceuticals were not created because you "can't patent nature" - they were created because those beneficial and medicinal properties need to be carefully formulated to be as effective as possible. The scientists creating pharmaceuticals understand what other substances need to be combined and what dosages are needed for different types of ailments, ensure that they are delivered in a form that has the best bioavailability (there's a reason some meds are pills, others are liquid to be injected or infested, etc), are aware of side effects from all those substances and how to prevent them for medicinal benefit, and do a thousand other things that "nature" cannot do on its own. Natural remedies are great when they work. But a lot of diseases and conditions require more than what nature can treat on its own. Don't bash pharmacology just because you clearly don't understand it. Especially since your username effectively confirms your bias as a snake oil pusher.

Ugh. This video reminded me of when I was struggling with my milk supply when breastfeeding. I was desperate to find something that would increase my supply and spent so much money on supplements, teas and snacks that said they would help and none of them did. I wish the FDA would go after those companies who prey on desperate new mothers who just want to be able to feed their babies. 😣

My mom is one of these people. She buys essential oils like they’re actually essential. I’m 13 and they’re okay. She uses them on my brothers and I but all they’re really good for is headaches and acne breakouts. They aren’t a cure-all for your problems. I think it’s mainly the placebo effect that is messing with everyone. You say it’s going to cure everything and people believe it and it helps them. I wouldn’t waste money on it though. p.s i love your videos!!

What sucks is that I make soap from scratch, and I'm in a few soap-making Facebook groups. You have no idea how many people suggest Young Living and DoTerra EOs for their soaps (I don't even think they're cold-process soap-stable, but that's beside the point). I get into SO many arguments and I always link your channel, other anti-MLM channels, hell, even the income disclosure statements, but nobody AT ALL is willing to even look into them. Nobody. People in MLMs/that support MLMs are too hung up in their own confirmation bias and belief-perseverance error to be open to new ideas. And it truly sucks.

Theres a podcast called The Dream that I think youd really enjoy - season 1 was all about mlm companies, and season 2 is all about the woo-woo "alternative health" stuff that is at best ineffective and at worst dangerous (such as the Goop garbage that includes a jade egg that can cause toxic shock syndrome due to jade being porous...). And I'm someone who grew up practicing, and still does practice, alternative health but in a logical way. Nothing is "magic" - everything my parents and I use has a logical reason behind it. For example, we have ginger tea with a sprinkle of cayenne when we're sick because those two foods increase blood flow (this is why spicy food makes you feel hot after you eat it). You can think of blood like the roads that white blood cell "cars" use to get to the area of infection (where the bacteria is living). So increasing circulation is like increasing the speed limit and opening up a few more lanes, helping the white blood cells reach the bacteria cells sooner. Herbs like ginger and cayenne are not a magic cure-all - they just give the body/immune system a little boost as it fights infection. This is how medicinal herbs work - in small, logical ways. Topical supplements like oils can not affect the body like this as they are external as opposed to internal, and essential oils are not designed to be taken internally. I'm so sick of snake oil salespeople like YL making up junk about "metaphysical" gobbledegook and turning people off the entire concept of alternative medicine (which btw should obviously be used *with* traditional medicine and NEVER instead of it).

As someone who has had peppermint oil help their skin, my advice is: -Research from unbiased sources -Diffuse it, don't use straight -test on a small patch of skin -don't use if it burns Basically, if you're considering adding anything to your skin care, treat it like new skin care and be careful. Peppermint can sooth sunburns, but if used wrong it can burn worse

I have used essential oils for years now. I used to buy from YL, but the whole you have to spend $100 each month to get your paycheck really struck me the wrong way. I personally have seen benefits from some essential oils, not all of them, but some. And I do believe that there can be some benefits from them if you use them correctly and don't expect "cures" for major issues. I suffer from depression and I would never stop taking my medication and rely only on essential oils. I have mostly found benefits in oils for respiratory issues and general wellness. My other big issue with YL is bc they're an MLM, their prices are insane and unaffordable. They also don't disclose their purity testing results. Other companies, like Plant Therapy (NOT an MLM) are fully transparent with quality testing results and use 3rd party testors. I think people can find some benefits from essential oils, but should definitely do research on the kind of company theyre purchasing from. Don't purchase from an MLM! In my research I also found that independent, 3rd party testing done of YL oils showed that some oils didn't even include the single oil listed on the bottle. And most included filler oils. So purity is not a priority for YL, money is. This could be a big culprit of skin reactions to certain oils, when someone thinks they're getting pure cinnamon oil and filler oils are not listed on the bottle at all.

As a biologist with a master degree in food supplements the cringe is sooooo hard. I pour a few drops of lavender essential oil on my dried flowers to make the room smell good and make me feel a bit more relaxed, but that's about it. Put it in the soap to make it smell good or very very diluted in a lotion, but do not use it if pregnant, do not use it if you are a kid or a teen, do not drink it, do not rub it pure on the skin and do not take it internally! I don't want essential oils on my skin, they are so lipophilic they get absorbed very fast and deeply in the skin which can provoke reactions and permanent allergy to even chemical burns which lead to scarring!!! That stuff should not be used 100% pure!!!! And sure as hell shouldn't be so expensive or sold by incompetent moms who put emojis and mispellings all over their posts!

Great video. Would love to hear your thoughts on the bizarre "clean with me" genre of YT videos by many of these Young LIving cult moms... promoted as stay at home mom vlogs/ "cleaning inspo" with no ad disclaimer or YL affiliation clearly sated, but clearly they are nothing more than heavily veiled ads for YL ! The women claim to be self-filming their cleaning routines around their eerily similar and soulless suburban mcmansions, but based on how similarly shot, edited (w slick music and impossible angles) the videos of this genre from different channels appear, it seems they're not your average homemade vlogs... I suspect they are being produced by the company (the music alone seems like something a single mom youtuber couldn't get the rights for herself). Of course somewhere along the sometimes hour long videos, they will drop a line like "I get all my cleaning products from Young Living" or are sure to fill a few essential oil diffusers throughout the house as part of their "cleaning routine." Wide angles shots clearly show off expansive, granite-counter-topped homes with their wasteful space plans and hideously tacky suburban architecture, Thus appealing further to their target audience of certain "moms" who undoubtedly idealize this type of home/family life. And don't even get me started on how all of them also seem to feature their Christianity in the videos... whether its showing them forcing their kids to pray before a meal, or shots of obvious signage, crosses, or "Blessed" wooden wall hanging they conveniently "dust" in a shot... is there some right wing, christian agenda also linked to Young Living company? certainly feels like it. I am a liberal, atheist, childless, urbanite who doesn't give a crap about essential oils, and who also doesn't even like to clean, yet I have watched HOURS of these types of videos in various youtube rabbit hole moments... they are mesmerizing, addictive and hypnotizing (partly for me bcs I just find them so bizarre) but I suspect they are designed with just this purpose in mind. Something definitely fishy about them. If interested and you can't find, I can send some links!

I need your Love mug! Ty for exposing the shadiness and the shyster Ness of young living for I can attest that I honestly thought I was rekindling an old friendship from high school when I reached out to her to say hello and that it was good to see her online. I was literally just giving her a friendly greeting and the bonus of course would be to start a conversation with her and talk about old times but then she started right in with her young living shyster business And proceeded to try and sell me a $96 bottle of a special lavender … It was an even a half an ounce I don’t even think it was a quarter ounce if I remember it was definitely below that. And come to find out she had put me on her mailing list she had put me on her group list she had put me on this and that list and I was so offended by the fact that that was the first thing she went for when I DMd her and she’s not hurting for income-she lives in a very exclusive luxury Town and has her massively successful and woman owned Japanese garden landscape business which is cool I like that and she could’ve even told me about that but no had to put all the oils in the messages (and I put in tremendous research over at least 20 years of my own just because I want to know how to buy quality oils for value). Anyway, sorry about the long, but yeah about that mug! And you’re truly gorgeous-💕

So my ex roommate uses YL and honestly, I bought a lot of the stuff more for the smell aspect because I liked my room smelling good and candles would set off our fire alarm a lot for some reason so I settled with a safer alternative which was YL essential oils in a diffuser. I liked the smells but never actually used it on my skin because I was pretty happy with skin products I had. I have eczema really bad and my skin gets super itchy and irritated so I literally don’t use fragrance in anything. Well, one time we were cooking and I burned my hand pretty badly on the stove and I immediately just shoved it under cold water just to get any sort of relief possible. I asked her if she had some burn cream in her first aid kit (she did) but she literally proceeded to grab an essential oil spray that had “healing properties for burns”. I stared at her as she proceeded to spray it on my hand and about started crying from the sheer throbbing/shooting pain that was now radiating through my hand. Honestly, it was more painful than the hot stove touching my skin. Then she told me to stop crying and that I needed to just leave it on and it would help. I suffered for about 10-20 minutes and was like “I can’t, I need to wash it off and I need that burn cream that’s in your first aid kit.” She seemed irritated but I mean she couldn’t stop me I was so relieved to wash that stuff off. Slathered that burn cream on and wrapped my hand and unfortunately I think the spray had been on so long that the cream couldn’t even save me. Needless to say I never used nor will I ever use essential oils on my skin again. She’s graduating from nursing school which actually concerns me🤷🏼‍♀️
