**********
After spending 8 weeks of doing :-D :
-VERY intensive running in of 50hrs per cartridge,
-subsequent intensive sweet spot listening and
-off-field, off-centre casual listening to get used to and for me to soak into each of their tonal characteristics,
I have finally been able to release the results of the cartridges! And thank you friends for your patience.
Group A of USD$70-80 cartridges consist of:
-AudioTechnica AT100e,
-Goldring Elan,
-Grado Black,
-Ortofon OM5e,
-Sumiko Oyster :-D
Group B of USD$90-120 cartridges consist of:
-AudioTechnica AT120eB,
-Goldring Elektra,
-Grado Green,
-Nagaoka MP-110,
-Ortofon 2M Red,
-Shure M97xE,
-Sumiko Black Pearl :-)
Much hard work,
and it is my fervent wish that the honest-to-goodness manufacturers that come up with truly brilliant products will be recognised and earn their rightful sales from us consumers, who have been constantly blighted by the advertisement dollars and “obligations” audio magazines (both newsstand and online audio sites) have towards the manufacturers and retailers who pay them advertisement monies. Many of my friends here all over the world have told me many stories and situations about such “obligations”. A “ring of dubious network” they even put it. I hear all of you, my friends. And thank you very much.
I came out with my own monies to do this review: buying the 12 cartridges from musicdirect.com and lpgear.com websites to maintain neutrality to all of my local retailers.
I have also painstakingly bought 12 Jelco HS-25 cartridges, adjustable for AZIMUTH.
All 12 cartridges have been EACH FITTED ON TO each’s OWN JELCO HS-25 high quality magnesium headshell with Litz wires.
EVERY CARTRIDGE has been painstakingly adjusted for:
-OVERHANG,
-AZIMUTH,
-TRACKING FORCE,
-VTA and more accurately, the correct STYLUS RAKE ANGLE of 92degrees.
I am thus been able to do the critical A-B-C-D-E-B-E-C-A-D-C-A-E-D-B QUICK CHANGING AND QUICK SWAPPING OF CARTRIDGES WITH THE ABOVE PREPARATIONS.
So that I am able to ASSESS and COMPARE & CONTRAST all the cartridges in whichever fashion I want to zoom in on, VERY QUICKLY and not leaving to IMAGINATION AND MEMORY of how each cartridge sounded during this critical A-B-C-D-E-B-E-C-A-D-C-A-E-D-B COMPARISONS.
It has been all, a very long and tedious process, and making sure it is totally fair, and that every cartridge is given the precise measurements/alignments to shine.
The AUDITIONING PROCESS includes listening through:
- Avid Sequel with SME V and Technics SL1200Mk5,
- the Schiit Mani phonostage,
- the Avid Pulsare2 phonostage with adjustable capacitance settings to countercheck for optimum cartridge performance:
As stated by their respective manufacturers' :
- AudioTechnica AT100e = 100-200pF
- AudioTechnica AT120eb = 100-200pF
- Goldring Elan = 150-400pF
- Goldring Elektra = 150-400pF
- Grado Black = not stated by manufacturer
- Grado Green = not stated by manufacturer
- Nagaoka MP-110 = not stated by manufacturer
- Ortofon OM5e = 200-600pF
- Ortofon 2M Red = 150-300pF
- Shure M97xE = 200-300pF
- Sumiko Oyster = not stated by manufacturer
- Sumiko Black Pearl = not stated by manufacturer
The AUDITIONING PROCESS includes listening through:
- main hall system through Vitus RI-100 integrated amplifier and B&W804D speakers (front-ported),
- main bedroom through the Aktimate Blue active speakers (rear-ported),
- study room through the Dali Kubik Free + Extra stereo pair of active speakers (sealed box design).
Thank you Friends, I HEREBY PRESENT TO ALL OF YOU,
THE COMPREHENSIVE 12 CARTRIDGE REVIEW SERIES:
- GROUP A USD$70-80 : FIVE CARTRIDGES SHOOT OUT,
- AND GROUP B USD$90-120 : SEVEN CARTRIDGES SHOOT OUT.
Sincerely,
Ian.

Update: I am now enjoying a 45 year old Shure V15 type III which has been fitted with a JICO SAS-B stylus assembly. Its nuanced details, black as coal backgrounds, broad sound stage, and airy presence as sought after brings to an end my quest for a cart that delivers desired performance.

Actually, a quite fabulous cart, if you dial in a bit of treble boost. With the brush engaged, you virtually eliminate the arm/cartridge low frequency resonance, which enables cleaner tracking, keeps surface dust off the stylus, and eliminates static charge.

I may be late on this pick up, but between you and Michael Freer, I get various great info. I had used either the Sure 95, or a Stanton cartridge (don't remember the number off hand). For a long while the audio stores here in New Mexico only supplied Audio Technica cartridges, which I am not too happy with. Your videos on cartridges have clued me into a "whole nother" world. And shockingly a whole much, much higher price range. But, thanks, your enthusiasm and insights and investments are so appreciated.😊

I purchased an M97xE to supplement my Shure V15V-MR. I am surprised that I prefer the M97xE. Also, interestingly enough, I can not easily distinguish the M97xE playing Diana Krall recordings from Stereo SACDs of the same recordings, with exception of a pop or two occasionally heard from the vinyl. The cartridge just sounds "natural" and seems to present Diana Krall up in front of Bass Violin. I have a JBL B-380 Subwoofer in my system to get all the bass there is and the M97xE delivers it to the sub when it's in the recording to be delivered. I have not heard the mid range issues described in the video but trust I might want to buy one of the other cartridges you have recommended for even more listening pleasure than I'm getting now, maybe the Nagaoka MP-150.

Over these many years, I've used the M97xE before and I found your assessment of it to be very much like my own. It's not a terrible cartridge, but it also depends on what you are seeking. It has its merits, but it also has its cons, as you aptly stated. At a certain price point, perhaps on sale, it's an excellent cartridge for the money. But for a just a little bit more in cost, you can do substantially better and I'll leave it to you to disclose those in "tier 2" to which I refer. Another great video. Thank you for this endeavor.

+Simon Dearest Simon...I AM VERY THANKFUL for your honesty. Yes it is not a terrible cartridge... it has its strengths. - I was very. very AWARE: I had very high hopes for it as HifiChoice Aug 2015 issue rated it better than AudioTechnica AT120eB, Goldring Elektra and Talk Electronics C200. I had thought that it will trump the other 6 cartridges... But in real life, the other 6 are better. Competition is stiff. - I AM very aware that some of my viewers and friends, supporters of my channel here, are using the the M97 too. But I just cannot bring myself to say the other 6 are not better. - I runned it in, extensively listened to it, made sure everything is correct, and even on the SME V arm with Avid setup...relistened, and relistened, but still... the other cartridges DO CLEARLY PERFORM BETTER :-D ! I don't get paid for this. That is why I have to be accurate :-D. I mean this as a truthful statement as the reverse of the above 2 sentences rings true for magazines and online reviewers with paid advertisements from retailers and manufacturers. I don't mince my words, :-) but it doesn't mean I cannot maintain my cordiality and friendliness with all. Dearest Simon, THANK YOU very much for your time and efforts keying in your comments and replies to me. I am very happy to hear from you!!!!! Thank you! Sincerely from Ian.

Hi Ian. I really enjoy your reviews and appreciate your honesty (especially when you showed how awful the Black Pearl was) . I like the fact that you explain your observations of the sound qualities and that I can hear exactly which part of each sound (instruments, cymbals, vocals, etc.) I'm listening for. I currently own an AT120E and an Ortofon 2M Red and can't wait to hear how you grade them. If your observations are the same as mine, I'll definitely take your advice on my next upgrade! Keep up the good work and I'll definitely be waiting and watching your future videos!

Thank you Robert :-D I am also humbled by your comments, and also appreciate you knowing that 1) 99% of us will know what to listen for while going around/having home auditions of equipment and kit :-D!!! And that 2)we can be very precise and we do not need 3pages ( ...hahaha tongue-in-cheek) like audio magazines to understand the sound parameters and overall feel we get between A-B-C-B-A-C equipment! Thank you very, VERY MUCH for telling me that you "can hear exactly which part of each sound" we are listening for. This is really what I achingly, painfully hope all of you my friends would be able to understand from my description! Your feedback gave me the peace that I can have knowing that what I set out to achieve, is received in full by my friends and viewers. Best of regards to you and your family too! Sincerely, Ian.

Great review on the Shure M97xE as well as insights to all the MM cartridges reviewed so far. The option to upgrade M97xE to JICO SAS Stylus is something worth mentioning. This is the cartridge I'm currently using and I've been pretty happy with it. While I'm disappointed it fares so poorly in its group, I'm very appreciative of the honest review and the hard work that goes into objectively comparing all these cartridges based on different criteria. I'm currently using small bookshelf speakers, so the good bass response of the M97 would seem to be wasted on my bass-deficient speakers. I look forward to seeing how the others in this price range fare as I will be due for a replacement stylus/cartridge within the next year. Your analysis will be a big help in selecting a good match for my system. These are excellent videos. Thank you for making these. : )

+Mike A Dear Mike...I am really sorry about it. Nobody likes his or her choice to be rated... as you can see in my other responses to other friends here... I was very, very aware of the Shure M97xE's ratings by hifichoice aug2015. I really had high hopes for it, expecting it to really trounce the other 6 carts in this group. I WAS!!! I really was!!! If there is such a thing as subjectivity, I was saying in my mind, rearing the M97xE..: "Alright M97xE!!!, boss the other 6 carts!".. But, for example, the MP110, Green, Elektra easily shows the way how amazingly great music could be reproduced at this price range... I shall review the top cart in this group, but in ascending order of performance I shall review, so that we can appreciate what usually went amiss for cartridges in this group, e.g. midrange, etc etc... and how eventually the top cart will tie in the best of every parameter, and appreciate how honest-to-greatness:-D its performance is. The top cart is really breathtaking. We will come to it together. I was very prepared for people to give me the thumbs down. But I am truly, humbly glad that my friends trust me for who I am. Subjective as everybody can be, but as the needle comes to the grooves, and signals come off from the speakers, all subjectivity is thrown out of the window. Only Objectivity remains. I am humbled by this project I have undertaken for all of you, all my friends. This is done out of my committed service to the worldwide vinyl community. I am not paid for this. And as such, I can only be accurate in my reviews. Honesty allows me to walk straight, look straight in people's eyes, carefree in my steps. Best Regards to you and your family, my friend! Ian :-D

Upgrading to the Jico SAS opens this cart up. But a lot more expensive. A cheaper alternative is the Jico 97HE (hyper elliptical stylus) with good results too. Even though the 97he was designed for the previous generation Shure's it still fitted ok.

I'm seeing all these cart reviews just now, which are great. I admire your dedication and the audio community thanks you for it. Just an added perspective, I'm familiar with the sound of this cart and I understand why in your system context it might not have worked. The speakers you're using for this test (B&W nautilus) are not known to have an open midrange compared to other models from other brands. I'm not defending the Shure and I'll probably agree with your conclusions as well. But anyone reading these reviews should take into account the rest of the audio chain. I'm almost certain that the Shure will sound more open on speakers that have a more articulated midrange like Sonus Faber or if one is into headphones, a Grado perhaps. The rankings might not change, the Nagaoka still being the most musical, but areas of deficiencies can be mitigated elsewhere in the chain. It's the reason why audiophiles take great pains in finding the best components that work best together.

I use this with a JIco SAS replacement stylus and it sounds amazing - being cut the way it is, you need to really get your alignment down to the best possible. JIco still has this but the cost has gone way up. If you already have the cartridge, and/or you’ve known about this but you wanna know if you want to spend the $200+ for the JIco - I’d say, go for it. (If it’s any good, I use a SP-10 with an SME 309 but ive very recently switched to a Jelco 750. Thanks for the video, i enjoy your content. (thinking of getting the MoFi studio deck - am in SG too - didn’t know they had it here already.

Hi Trevor, I've been looking into the idea of upgrading to the SAS as heard great things... but being based in the UK it's hard to find and quite costly around £215 as you mentioned. How does it compare with other carts in this day? Like the Nagaoka range for example if you have experience comparing. Cheers

I completely agree with you about the treble being a tad softened and rolled off. From memory all Shure cartridges I've used are like this (including the m91 and v15 mk iii with factory styli) Which makes them excellent for bright sounding systems (Klipsch). The M97XE is pretty much a more cheaply manufactured V15 with inferior quality body and stylus. Always use it with the brush down on a medium mass (s shaped arm) and brush up on a low mass tonearm. Keep up the reviews and im especially curious on your opinion on the 2M Red.

+TheWretchedWorld If you get the oppertunity try a shure V15 MK iii or above if you can find one for a reasonable price. You'd be very surprised how much of a step up these are from the m97xe despite being near identical.

+HiViNyws channel I've lived with the Shure M97xe in two forms (Stock Stylus and JICO SAS). I think you have the stock stylus sound performance described very well. I am assuming you are loading it at the standard 47k ohm loading...if your phono section allows for a 62k or even a 100k loading, you will notice a much better performance out of the standard Shure M97xe MM cartridge. I am sure, MOST of your thoughts around the cartridge will change. You will notice a more open and dynamic midrange right of the bat, and the treble region will open up significantly without strain. If possible, try the above recommendations. I am really enjoying your channel so keep up the great work!!

I use this cart and would agree with these scores for the most part, however, I would suggest doing another review with this cart not running the stabilizer brush. In my experience, it evoked a significantly different sound from the m97xe

Another great review Ian and I totally agree with your thoughts on this cartridge. It was selling in the $60 range just a few years ago when I bought it but now that it is nearly twice the cost it's performance just doesn't match up. Did you do any testing with the stabilizer up or down? I couldn't really tell a difference and just ended up running the cart with the stabiliser in the up position.

Thus far, I have been using it on my records with outstanding effect. I cannot be happier. This is really the best. They do not ship overseas. For this review series, were you able to work out a deal with your local hi-fi dealer to be able to audition all these carts and return them? Or did you have to purchase them and then sell them 2nd hand? No particular reason for this question other than I'm curious as to how you were able to procure so many of these carts xD Another fantastic review by the way, thank you very much for these!

Any advice if it is more worthwhile upgrading the stylus on this to the Jico Sas or is it more worth while moving to something like grado red? I have this catridge currently and like it a lot but I am looking to upgrade. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have a Technics 1200 mk2 if that helps with choices.

Dear Vincent... :-D Sorry, but I have not tried the Jico SAS upgrade as yet... Really sorry but I cannot provide any accurate and confident information as to whether to root for a Jico Sas or that the Grado Red is definitely better. All I know is that the Grado Red is a superb performer and bested the other 3 carts in the Group C ($170-$200) review and shoot-out series. :-D Warmest Regards, Ian.

I just bought the Shure M97xe and everytime I would adjust the stabiliser brush, I'd hear a very loud humming sound through my speakers... I was offered a refund and will be sending it back. I'm going to watch through each of your artridge reviews, but what would you recommend for that price point instead of the Shure? What sounded nicest for the value? Oh and I am buying a Rega Planar 3 2016 to use it on Thank you!

Yes I am thanks so much for your review and for taking the time to answer my question I have it set at 320 pf it sounds best to me that way and it being a hi compliance cart at 25 your arm is about 11 to 12 grams in mass in your lp gear headshell is what 10 to 11 grams that is to high a mass for that cart what do you think
@HiViNywschannel
@HiViNywschannel 8 жыл бұрын
+Elizabeth Y Michael Cazares Dear friend, I am sure you are a huge fan and supporter of this cart. You are right about the compliance getting into the picture too. I have checked on that for both the Technics arm and the SME V arm I was using for this audition. It was backbreaking doing many, many things, and testing many cartridges. There are other reasons for framing up and doing this review and presenting it in certain ways, and there were many things I did out of the way to test and audition them which I didn't reveal all... it is my good heart to omit what may not be necessary to the young budding audiophiles. I had emailed 2 other fellow friends my intentions for doing so. If you don't mind, I would share with you as a return email to you. My email is hivinyws@gmail.com :-D Sincerey, Ian :-D

@HiViNywschannel 8 жыл бұрын
Dear Reza, yes it is. But I would suggest you use other carts like the Grado Green, Goldring Elektra or the Nagaoka MP110. You would need to get the appropriate spacer to alter the tonearm base height so that the VTA will remain correct (i.e. the tonearm with the newly fitted cartridge, would be perfectly horizontal). Thank you Brother Reza!!! :-D

can any one help, what is the best antiskate seting on this cart (m97xe of course) , i have to mention i use the shure brand fg2 force guage to read a 1.75 gram of force for brush down , i do own 2 other cheapar brand digital skales witch read shures force at 1.95 , dont know if its corect using the shure brand or not but i use my digital scales for furher refencing , just thought id mention what i use to further gaing what any opinion users may have for acurate antiskate, thanks in advance for the help

For 1.75g with brush down, needle will only have 1.25g on it, antiskating must be adjusted to match needle force: 1.25g. Brush will substract 0.50g to whatever weight you choose. Recomended weight with brush down is 1.25gr - 2gr

+Elizabeth Y Michael Cazares Dear Friends! Thank you. The recommended pF for the M97xE by Shure is 200-300pF. My avid pulsare2 phonostage is able to tune the capacitance settings between 100pF, 200pF, 500pF, 1.5nF, 10nF and 20nF. Thus tested it at 200pF :-) . Of course it was also done at 100pF for both the Schiit Mani and the avid pulsare2 phonostages. Just to be sure. Thank you! :-D I believe you are using the Shue M97xE cartridge too! Sincerely, Ian.

Does the brush create static or is it grounded?
@HiViNywschannel
@HiViNywschannel 6 жыл бұрын
Hi buddy :-D, brush will create static as one combs the record surface. So the key is to, after combing and wiping off the dust, place the brush in a "union jack" manner in 8 different places on the record, and each time letting the brush in contact with the recodr for 5-10seconds. This way, you get to comb the record in step 1, and then destat in step 2.
