Fun fact: English Grammar was written in the 19th Century, based on 17th century spellings, partially derived from the conventions of 11th century Norman french.

I'm not quite sure why these letters sound quiet in some words? Are there any rules or are they exception words whose correct pronunciation should just be memorized?

'often' has a silent letter for me (in my accent) but some native English speakers do pronounce it! 'baptism' does not have a silent letter - they are all pronounced!
