He was in prison at the time. Makes sense why he would wanna keep a multi million dollar enterprise in the family. He also saw the future of organized crime- white collar. He knew the blue collar rackets weren’t gonna be sustainable in the long run. Paul was a great boss but his last few years were abysmal. Even if John didn’t kill him he was going away for 100 years in the commission case. That whole Neil thing is a bit overblown. I couldn’t possibly see Neil doing a better job in those 10 years overall. When Gotti took over the Gambinos were pulling in over $500 million a year. And there still would have been a changing of power in the end of ‘85.

There used to be 4 economic groups in society, not 3: poor. working class, middle class and investment class. With no access to the ports, which started with containment shipping, starting I'm the 1960's, the time clock started running out on The Mob. NY alone lost over 200, 000 jobs. Add to that the flow of goods coming not from Europe, but Asia, where there are no historical connections for Sicilian/Italians coming from the West Coast and the source of goods is no longer passing through their hands. For the two decades after WW2, everything of value was coming from Europe. That changed in the 70's.

All I can think of is Vinny's Mother at the airport "My Blue Heaven" when his family helped him escape. LOL! They are all working in legitimate business. Some are in Palermo and still active. It is dangerous in Italy again. There are people returning to Palermo that were banned from ever returning. There are about 15 Gambino relatives around. They assassinated "Franky boy" a few years ago and there was someone jailed over bookmaking, or some stupid gambling charge. They were moving oxys and steroids in NYC. They have gotten even quieter because of all the sloppy gangs out there. Asians, Latins and Blacks are getting locked up left and right. They are there, but you will never know it because even if you are a best friend, they will not tell you who they are. It is way too dangerous. I don't feel Carlo made Paul boss because he wanted to take the family down the business route, it was to keep the head of the family in his literal family, they where cousins and brother in law's, and on top of that he wanted a Sicilian as Boss(Dellacroce wasn't Sicilian), the Sicilians thought of themselves higher than other Italians a lot, especially the old timers, another thing people don't seem to realize is that big Paul was made acting boss while Carlo was still alive and had been sitting in on meeting for him for a couple years

@@davidgladwin4954 I don't know that. Being a Catholic like I imagine Carlo Gambino was (at least in baptism), I'll tell you what I believe. Scripture says that God provides the sinner with a way back which, to me, means sincere repentance. If Carlo sincerely repented towards the end of his life, God would forgive. The key word is sincerely. If, by some miracle, he was given ten more years of life and he would have used those years to quit the mafia life no matter what it cost him, then his repentance was sincere. But if he would have used those years to return to that life as mob boss and the practices of extortion, stealing, deception and lying, bribery, murder and all the things that God hates, then his repentance would not have been sincere. Only Carlo and God know which it was. Buy I also remember the warning of Archbishop Fulton Sheen that if someone is planning on living a dissolute life and then repenting at the end to avoid punishment, he shouldn't think that he has fooled God as to what he was up to.
