Today on Maker Gray I'm showing you how to build a Mobile Plywood Lumber Storage Cart for your garage or workshop, which is a great way to keep lumber organized. Aside from the 2x4 base, I built this whole cart out of one sheet of plywood! I'm so glad to finally start organizing my workshop and have all of this wood up off of the floor. Thanks to Pink Soul Studios for the collaboration!
Overall cart dimensions: 18" deep, 48" wide, 39" tall (with the casters)

Nice cart for small woodshops, I have a 10x20ft shop and floor space is definitely at a premium and this doesn't take up a huge footprint! Thanks for the video!

I really like this nice simple design. I built it and did add two brackets towards the rear out at each end near the top and put a removable 3/4" ply bar across. This bar is the same distance out as the bottom cleat. This stops tip over of taller sheets. I also plan to add a small bin, probably on the right near the top for a bunch of those wee pieces I'm sure I need sometime. 🙂 When I need to drill through with a Forstner bit I first drill half way or so and then drill real small pilot hole in the center of this hole. This gives me an exact center to use the Forstner bit from the other side. The big advantage is that the first hole does not have to be watched carefully to stop it from drilling right through.

Little tip if you have a piece of scrap wood you can clamp that on the back of where your drilling and then you can make the hole in one cut instead of having to flip the board over

nice job, I am looking for ideas for a lumber cart that I can use for a lot of smaller pieces of highly prized lumber from trees I harvested. Your cart had some ideas I can use. I will make a suggestion regarding forestner bits to avoid the blow through. Try using a small drill, 3/32 or such to drill through as a center hole/mark. Then it is easier to drill from the back side with a bit more wood to work with. If you need to make sure of a location, you can use a center marking guide, mark the center of say a 1" hole. Mine has a lot of inside and outside circles, the outside has a center hole to mark the center.

Ok....I did a search and watched A LOT of videos for smaller scrap wood storage solutions. Just stumbled across yours.....BINGO!!!! This is the one I shall build. I have a garage with a lot of stuff so need to keep things compact. I like how the back portion will allow longer pieces of plywood lay flat (longer than cart). This is a safer way to store them rather than standing them long way up. Also like how its open in the front all the way down so you can see everything you have. Other carts I've found are closed in the front with plywood. Recently retired and don't have all the tools you do. Do not have the fancy pocket hold jig but its on my list. Figure I can rabbit, glue an screw from ends. May check harbor freight to see if I can get a better cost on the casters....but I like the idea of 4" casters. I may think about building without the 2x4's at the bottom...I'll try assembling see how sturdy it is without. I'm also on the lookout for a worktable ideas that can double as off feed table for my table saw. I don't want to buy one...want to build one (the journey of most of the fun). That may be an idea for one of your next video projects? Thanks so much for this great idea....I am now a subscriber!

This is the direction I'm going to go. I built an 8' long base last night. This morning I decided that it would be too big and I cut it in half. Then I made two A frames. Then I decided that the A frame approach for these two much smaller carts would not work either. Your design here is better. Thanks.

This was really helpful! I plan to purchase the plan. Would I be able to make all of the cuts mentioned with a Jig-Saw? Also, in the plan do you include the other items you use (such as the wheels)?
@MakerGray
@MakerGray 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'd recommend a circular saw at least, but yes I believe you could use a jig saw. Alma from Pink Soul Studios created the plans and I don't think that she included the wheels, etc (just the tools). However, they are all linked in the description of this video. Thanks again!

Great build. One question-is glue really necessary with pocket hole joinery?
@MakerGray
@MakerGray Жыл бұрын
It's just double strength. The glue is actually stronger than the pocket holes (which hold the boards in place while the glue dries). But pocket holes alone are fine! Especially if you ever want to take the cart apart. Thanks!

Hi there! I did not make the build plans for this project (Alma at Pink Soul Studios did). First off great video tutorial. I have only just started wood working, aren’t the pocket holes meant to be on the outside of the support pieces pointing in, rather than inside pointing out which would have less strength?

This looks like exactly what I need to organise the mess in the corner of my shop, thanks. You don't mention any sizes in the video - fair enough as I guess you are selling the plans, but can you at least give overall dimensions width, length, and height to help decide if it is going to work for me.
