BIG thanks for posting this m8, couldnt get the tyre off the wheel my wifes scooter. Your video solved the problem before I took it to Kwik Fit lol. I also used my track pump for my bike too. Cheers again!! : )

oh yes. thats the hardest bit. it took me a good few mins of really hard pressure to get the tire off. you mean the bit where you actually open the wheel up? - anyway glad you did it. - yes a normal bike pump for a schrader valve pumps these up and bikes.

Changing a flat tube and the most dreaded part of it for me is getting the rims to separate. I use three screwdrivers and it still takes me an hour sometimes. I wish there was a machine you could buy to do it. Or a tool. Some of these scooter rims are unbelievably hard to get apart. Ok I just got the rim to give it up more easily using a small hammer claw end and applying pressure on the inside of it, and it popped off rather well. AND I put some baby powder in the crease it seemed to help it slip off better. I just finished changing TWO tires because I sprayed wd 40 on the hubs and it ate through TWO tubes! I will never do that again. But with the hammer thing my troubles are over. I am intrigued.

oh my god mate! I have to put crowbar in my new ones and jump on it! I also had garage use an air pressure thing to seperate them if you take your wheel to a garage. now i use grease thick grease before putting them back together! also i got puncture proof solid tyres so i dont need change them so often! The scooter in the video was so easy but my new big 8mph one is horrible to do tyres! Thanks for the warning about wd40.

glad you enjoyed the video. PLEASE BE WARNED - when you take tyre off make sure all air is out before taking it apart, also it can come apart easy or very very hard. my new scooter took 2 of us and a crowbar - jumping on crowbar to prize the wheel apart. depends how long the wheel has been on scooter. when u put it all back together i suggest oil/lube before you put new tyre on so that next time its easier to come apart..all depends on the scooter smaller ones are usually easier tho. GOOD LUCK!

Always fully deflate tires/tubes before disassembling split rims (to prevent explosion)! Split Rims: For SAFETY and ease of disassembly (even for flat tires) the valve core should be removed before disassembly to ensure ALL air pressure is removed. Try standing on sidewall to break tire bead loose. If using a pry tool on aluminum wheels, I advise using plastic pry tools to avoid damaging wheel. I have steel wheels so I can pry with a screw driver without fear of damaging wheel, but plastic pry tools are still better since I don't want to damage the finish/paint on my wheels. Standing on the sidewall is so effective that a pry tool is often unnecessary. When reassembling rim, the bolts should (ideally) be tightened in a star pattern/order or criss-cross pattern/order. I'm not sure if a torque wrench is needed, but might be a good idea to get torque set exactly as wheels owners manual indicates. If no owners manual, a good estimate of torque can be estimated by the size and grade of bolts used combined with looking up that type bolt's torque spec in a chart. Such charts can be found in most aftermarket automotive or motorcycle repair manuals, or a Google search for bolt torque specs by grade and size. After reassembling rim, but before installing it on scooter, reinstall valve core and inflate tire to max air pressure (stated on sidewall) to ensure tire completely self centers itself on the rim. Visually verify tire centered on rim. Then mount rim on the scooter. This ensures a smooth ride (avoids a clown car bouncy ride). After mounting rims on scooter, reduce air pressure to amount that's appropriate for weight on rear tires when you're sitting on scooter. For most people this will be significantly less air pressure than tires max rated pressure. The max pressure rated/stated on sidewall is intended for carrying max load rating, which is typically a 300 lb person (or more). If your body + scooter weighs less 1.7 times a rear tire's max load rating, then you need to use less than max pressure in your tires because you're to light to use full pressure. The simple version of that is if you weight less than 300 lbs, you need to use less than max rated tire pressure. Use a tire pressure appropriate for your body weight and scooter weight. You can use math to form an estimate, and then a little trial and error testing to zero in on the best air pressure for you. For example, my scooter's tires max load rating is 225 lbs per tire. There's two rear tires. So 225 lbs x 2 means my scooter's rear tires could carry 450 lbs if inflated to their max inflation of 50 psi. However, I only weigh 140 lbs. If I used full pressure of 50 psi, the rough ride would break my back. I briefly tried 30 psi and it rode way to rough because it was way to much pressure for a light weight person like me. I won't trouble anyone with the math I then used to estimate a good pressure. For my body weight and scooter weight that's on rear tires, I calculated/estimated my rear tires needed somewhere from 16 to 22 psi. I reduced tires from 30 to 22 psi and rode it that way for a week. It rode slightly stiff/rough for me at 22 psi, but I do have a bad spine. So I lowered to 20 psi and now love it. The appropriate air pressure depends on your body weight, how soft a ride you need, how much range you need, and how hard you like to corner/handle.
@GhostvaperYT
@GhostvaperYT 4 жыл бұрын
Great post I'd love to see your math. I am 210 lbs and my scooter is rascal Ventura at 262 lbs manual says wheels 40 psi very rough ride what u say?? I have bad spine sciatica

I must learn how to do a bit more maintenance for scooters as I keep paying ££ all the time, can't really afford it. Normal stuff like changing a tyre, no point paying out all the time its stupid. I got 3 scooters now because I can't be without one if it goes wrong. No car! Will look into pressure guage. Thanks for your vid explains things very easily. PIP was far easier for me, too, I think once you've been to a tribunal and won, they can't really argue with that. Cheers again.

no problem I do most maintenance at home. sometimes scooter needs tracking (steering shaakes) or just a good service i do all that at home. they are dead simple machines really. - Charlie forgot to say drive into petrol station you can use their air pump in the station. put wheels usually to around 35-40 psi.

yeah thats right or remove any nails or glass - but this was my first time ever doing anything with my scooter so I reckon I did ok. I will put in caps so people read - PLEASE WASH/CLEAN YOUR TYRE OUT before you put a new tube in check for nails/glass/thorns etc etc or you will get re-punctured! actually if you watch at around 8:17 I do actually attempt to clean it. I forget first but then change my mind and attempt to clean. thanks for the comment

Very good video but unfortunately my mum's scooter wheels are not split rims, they are one piece wheels and I can't get any levers under the rim to remove the tyre. My local garage couldn't help either as they don't have any equipment (the clamp/vice and hydraulic press) for such small wheels. So I'm stuck. 😞

i have never seen a scooter that doesnt have split rims?? my new scooter has them but they are horrible to get off it took 2 men jumping on crowbars to lever the rims out of the tyre. ill do my best to help if you give me your mums scooter model. - if i cannot help then i would suggest your local scooter repair shop (not car garage) - even possible a bike shop?

@@GhostvaperYT Thanks for your reply. The scooter model is Drive Viper. It had four bolts on the wheel but when I undid them, all it did was release some kind of circular break shoe that was attached to the rear of the wheel. However there are six allen bolts on the rear of each "spoke". These have factory yellow positioning marks and refuse to budge in any case. .

@@GhostvaperYT Update: You were right, it is a split rim! Turns out I had to remove the four main wheel bolts AND the six allen bolts hidden on the back. When I did that the two halves just fell apart. Thanks again for your video and time in replying.

@@bikahjoeUK lol yeah its very very rare to find a non-split rim wheel. when you got it apart was it easy? my new scooter is a rascal ventura and when you open my rims they will not come apart! it took 2 big lads with crowbars to seperate my rims! - so did u sort it out anyway??? i hope so. hope your mum is back flying around in no time. btw a thought for the future is on my back 2 wheels (where all the weight is) I have put 2 solid tyres so i cannot get punctures on the back. solid tyres i have found are great no punctures at all! but i kept air normal ones on front for good steering and handling

@@GhostvaperYT Hi again, yes I got it apart by using a make-shift extension for my allen key and giving it some welly! So I've discovered that the inner tube is leaking around where the metal valve body is welded to the rubber. I'm thinking that's not an easy repair so now looking to buy a new inner tube. Trouble is the size I want (3.00-8) seems to be quite unusual and not many mainstream sellers have them. I'll keep looking though and probably best to get two while I'm at it! Cheers.

Hi, I've just been watching your video and noticed that your putting the nuts on wrong! The nuts are supposed to be facing outwards like they are on a car. The way you have them is going to be very difficult to put them on and take them off. Imagine changing a car wheel. You don't go behind the wheel to change they tyre the nuts are visible for you to take them off same goes for the scooter wheels. You can check out other videos on here if you don't understand what I'm trying to say. Apart from that I enjoyed watching your video.
@GhostvaperYT

on this scooter the nuts are on the inside. you take the wheel off with the center nut and once off the nuts are on the inside. same on all the wheels of this one. thanks for commenting. - for example look at start around 2:30 and you see they (the nuts) are inside. - although i now have a new scooter which is how yousay - like a car with 4 nuts on outside.

It's called a "split rim" and it is supposed to make it easier to get the tyre on and off as a regular rim requires a tyre lever to lever the tyre off and on. Some times you'll wish it is a regular one piece rim as the two halves of the split rim can be extremely difficult to line up and push together. It's not a problem with this rim but with mine you need hands like a gorilla to get the two halves together and tighten the bolts/nuts. A large G Clamp would make the job easier unless you haven't got a Gorilla working for you. Oh DON'T USE A LARGE FLATHEAD SCREW DRIVER to push the valve core of the Schrader valve in, it could damage the tip. There is a special purpose tool available called the "BALLARDS VALVES BEST FRIEND STEM TOOL".
@GhostvaperYT
@GhostvaperYT 6 жыл бұрын
thanks for your comment. you are correct it is hard to work with these wheels sometimes. i now have a tool which removes the inside of the schrader valve. i have 10x spare valve insides also. so now i just remove inside of valve and air flies out. thanks for your comment. - edit - yes my tool is called Ballards Valves best friend also!

It's called a "keyway" and a "key". That's the part that keeps the axle from just spinning inside the rim. Leave it out the axle spins but the wheel doesn't move. Also, you can use a flatless insert and never be bothered with flat tires.

thanks for your comment on my new scooter i run with 2 solids on the back where all the weight is and ive found 99% of my punctures are on the back. and i use air tyres on front as they are softer for going up kerbs and lighter on my steering since i made that change about 3 years ago I have only had 1 pnucture which is amazing as i live in an area full of glass and rubbish that pple dump everywhere! so you are right solids are the way to go but if like me you want light steering put them just on the back.

Why not just use tyre weld far less to carry around and far quicker to fix a puncher or two 🤔 🙄 you give the bottom a good old shake screw it onto your tyre valve turn it on and it inflates your tyre and keeps it inflated 😁 far less hassle than carrying a pump, tube, and ratchet spanner around Plus it helps not to ride around on practically board tyres because you get way to many punches if you do, I've used tyre weld for many years and never had any issues with it not sealing the punches yes its classed as a temporary seclusion but I've driven around on tyres with tyre weld in them for months and they never go flat
