You have to make sure with a vet that they have good hips/joints for mobility and wait until they are old enough to actually do mobility first, some good tasks would be guiding to exits or family members as well as forward momentum, those are a few I know of c:

The dog I had at the time, I washed him because after being attacked for months by these people in messages and groups I felt like I was the abuser they called me They swore he was to small and morbidly obese and my gear was wrong. All from a picture of him laying down taken at an angle. He had been to the vet day and was maybe 5 pounds over. He was past my knees and he was still in training and not old enough for mobility. I had the handle high to teach him he be mindful of it at all times.

How so. She And her group, Service Dog Free Press, had been attacking me for hours before this suddenly came out. Saying I was abusive for using a dog to small for mobility. She then ADMITS to doing the same in this video!!! My dog was 4 inches above my knee and weighed 99 to my 115. The only reason I used the handle was for grounding, never pulling or any pressure as she does! You can NOT attack someone with lies then at the same time ADMIT to people you do the same even more so!!!

Sorry that happened to you and your dog could easily even do heavy mobility with you if vet approved so idk why that was a problem. My dog comes to my knee and is almost half of my weight she only does light mobility like momentum pulling, counterbalance, and guide work, and depending on the weight of my chair she may help pull me in my wheelchair as well

Yes he could have. I got rid of him before he was cleared for that training. These women broke me. After the attacks on here, in email, in messages and in several Facebook groups and pages for two weeks I did feel like I was abusing him. I believed them when they said I did not deserve a service dog and that all of my animals should be taken. What they do not know they made me sui**al. I took the dog they were attacking to the pound. Dropped my animals off at a friends and came home ready to, well....... My parents got to me just in time. I spent a month in a mental.health hopspital. People like these do not care how what they say affects people.. I was able to get my other animals back

miranda h heavy. if you check out The Frey Life (KZfaq channel) they don't use a handle but they lean on their large dogs shoulders (he is a standard poodle and she is fairly small.)

Your comment is old, but that would likely work well because an average sized golden would be closer to 50% of your weight and they're large dogs

Those ratios are made up by a random handler. The only way to know if your dog is big enough is if you go to an orthopedic vet.

I don't know what will work best for you. However, I'll share my experience in case it's useful I also have balance problems. I have proprioception difficulties as well. My disability is due to multiple sclerosis. After 5 years of waiting, I now have a service dog in training! He is training to do balance work and light mobility, as well as to retrieve the ten million objects I drop in a day. That helps a lot as picking things up is another chance to fall on my face. My dog also alerts to changes in my walking when my balance and coordination go south. He stands still and a lean my hands (not weight) on his back until I stabilize. When he has alerted to a walking change it's time to get home or where I can sit for a while and hope to recover. If I'm stubborn and worsening he stands perpendicular in front of me and stands on my feet until I sit and rest. As much as I gripe about my dog telling me what to do, he's always been right. It's saved me some falls I think and reminds me to pay attention to my body. The initial alerting was his idea. At first I didn't listen until I'd start stumbling. It quickly became clear that if I take steps to slow it down at the first alert I can get by better. Sometimes standing a minute with my hand on his shoulders gives me a little extra time. He helps me balance when I get up from falls. I use his stability to reduce my wobbling while I change positions. I wish I could brace on him, but I'm too worried about hurting him. When I use my wheelchair his main job is retrieval. He loves wheelchair days because I'm on his level. The delight in his wheelchair heel is adorable. He has other jobs too, such as steadying my gait. I've used momentum in the past and it was very helpful. Right now, my balance is not good enough to use that though. So those things are absolutely great. I feel so lucky. Here's a disappointment: sudden directional changes, turning my head, getting bumped, trying to move out of someone's way can cause me to fall. Hard. I was looking forward to the thought that people would stop crowding me and pushing past me in crowds when I had a dog with me. This is *not* the case. I have been shoved out of the way more than once this week alone. One person actually knocked me down. I am a bit stunned that people still crowd a service dog, but they do. I'm ordering a sign for his harness handle asking for space. We'll see if it helps. Back to the bright side...my dog helped me up when I fell and that was great. Having a service dog is life changing. It's more work than I imagined; it isn't a magic solution to every problem...and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made.

And seriously...as far as crowds go, I'm still at everyone's mercy. Even with a dog. So for your Disney Trip, a service dog can of course help. However, you might find you need some form of solid support as well because people do shove.

@@AnoraJohnson thanks for the reply. After the virus I may see if I can use the therapist dog on outings we go on. I narrowed it down if I have visual dog for my field cut that also helps me with balance can be good. I did a lot of research last summer. Thanks again for the reply. I’m glad he is helping you. One time I was at an outdoor consort before the pandemic. The crowds where awful I felt like you of the pushing, etc.

@@26snoopy82 That sounds great! I got to work with a service dog briefly a few years ago, before teaming up with my current dog. The experience of working with the first dog amazed me. I hadn't known how much a dog can do. The first time I fell and she helped me up without my needing another person...wow. I will give one recommendation. If you have balance issues I encourage you to be sure you pair up with a very mellow and nonreactive and non-protective dog. Any tension on the dog's end of the leash wont help you, and a protective dog will be on edge caring for you. That tension will not allow the dog to fully sync up with your balance. Also, a stressed dog can move quickly to react to something they think might hurt you. Unfortunately, sudden movement from a dog doesnt mix well with poor balance. My SDiT is a Golden Retriever and super chill. It's a good match.

@@AnoraJohnson thanks for the info. It seems every time I want to go on my own to a trip with my museum. Or when I was high school the school had a field trip for about three or four days. My dad would always be with me. The last time I went to the pool. Dad sat in the car. Before my stroke they would always would leave my brothers at the pool. My brothers got to go places when we where terns in the 1990’s. But it’s like dad always is with me. I did not know if I have a service dog can this give me more freedom. I got the disability transportation last year. But as soon as I got it Covid hit. I found that collies are starting to be great service dogs too. There is one place in Oregon bug they do not train dogs with balance and eye sight. So I was looking at training my own service dog. Last summer.

My advise would be, if you cannot find a dog who can follow (at least) the 30% rule, then don’t get a dog. I don’t mean to be rude but it is the same with horses. Otherwise you risk their bone health (hips, spine, shoulders, ankles, neck etc) also the dog in question (it sounds like you might want a standard poodle or Samoyed due to their hypoallergenic qualities) needs to be a healthy weight (no over weight dogs count, as this is fat not muscle these dogs need to be doing a bunch of exercises to do the mobility work without harming themselves). I should also warn you, most large breed dogs are not for first time owners, or owners who have not had a large breed dog before. In all I would say you MIGHT be better using equipment rather than a dog, of course I don’t know you, your weight or how allergic your sister is so I cannot say for certain, very sorry and I do not mean to discourage you at all, just keep researching ❤️

@@jjbowman4653 Don't worry, I found a dog breed that works great, and I have a professional helping me on the side. I don't intend to do this yet! When I said heavier side, I mean like "a bit extra weight", not intensely heavy. But I do appreciate your warning, and I understand that any dog I get will be a learning experience, and I need to make sure that their weight stays in a good area (and attempt to take off some of my own!) along with making sure the professional knows everything going on.

Also in the past two months, my sister's allergy medications have taken effect, so she is no longer quite so allergic, just a more mild allergy so she can be near the dog.

Haha! My bad attitude. For three hours before this video they were attacking me in three Facebook groups. Calling me an abuser, saying I should not own animals, that I was a horrible person, that I needwd my a** kicked and much more. All over things they made up. Then she does this and ADMITS that HER dog is to small. She also uses the handles a hell.of a lot more than I ever did. Mine was for grounding ONLY

Her dog is a light mobility dog; which requires the dog be 30% of your body weight. Heavy mobility dogs should be 40-50% He's fine as a light mobility dog.

My dog looked to small for mobility work because he's short but was closer 70-80lbs, I'm only 85lbs never gone over 95lbs I'm a super tiny 18 yr old, and I'm only 5'5 he came to my knee. But he was perfect for it. Looks can be deceiving to each person, my dog sometimes looked huge to people. There's different types of mobility work too. Don't make a judgement on something you don't know about. Clearly if he was unfit to do what she needs him to, she wouldn't make him do it.

Absolutely not. A 35 lb dog is far too light. You'll absolutely hurt it.

I had a pull strap on my dog only for grounding no weight bearing or pulling they went after me for that too

Counterbalance is a mobility task. It's using the weight and momentum of another being or object to counter your own. My children used to counterbalance me to help me get off the ground or a chair. Even as a preschooler, my youngest child could use her weight to help me get from a couch to standing. It's very helpful

I know there are a lot ways people ground, and equipment designed for counterbalance has grounding potential as well. I'm sorry things didn't work out for you the way you wanted them to. I don't know anything about the situation, but I do know from experience that having a dog wash or change careers is heartwrenching. Hugs
