Mobius HD video camera for RC planes and multirotors

If you need a 1080p HD video camera for recording from your RC plane or multirotor, or even to act as an FPV camera then how does the Mobius stack up?
Well I'm quite impressed actually -- the image is very sharp, although the colors are rather over-saturated and not all that accurate. The Sony PJ760VE (my main camcorder) has far more accurate color rendition as you can see but, surprisingly, the Mobius seems a little sharper.

It's not a GoPro but it's a hell of a lot cheaper and I think you'll agree... the resulting video is pretty damned good!
Pro's:
- very affordable (about $67 including shipping)
- excellent video quality for the price
- nice form-factor for fitting to models (long and slender)
- a good sized battery
- has wide dynamic range making it worth considering as an FPV camera
- 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratios for FPV work
- can invert the image to allow use upright or upside down
- buttons are not easily knocked and work much better than the 808 cameras
con's:
- no way to add a safety-wire/string in case of a crash or mid-air
- it is bigger and heavier than the old keychain camera. My ladybird won't lift this baby!
Bottom line: Thumbs up!

Bruce. You can easily thread a small string or fishing line for a laynard to secure your Mobius through one of the holes in the bottom back corner. The holes that secure the clip on each side also have a bottom hole. So you can remove that downfall with this camera. I love my mobius!

I love my Mobius and I think it's the best choice for our hobby because of its weight, volume, video quality and...price of course. So you can put several Mobius actioncam on a plane to get multiple point of views. Would you put several GoPro cameras on a plane ? surely you wouldn't. I finally gave in a few weeks back and picked one up on sale. There's good support for this camera in the RC Groups, including firmware updates and pertinent discussions regarding issues such as GPS interference. I'll be strapping one onto my current ST-450 quad build. Wherever you purchase, be sure to also get the USB cable set as Bruce shows in the video so you don't have to order it later.

Thanks for your videos. I have 2 of these cameras on my home built quadcopter. One for the live video/recording and one for stills every 2 seconds.

Very top notch camera, performs very well and records very well, no bit rate in video or audio shortcuts, it's got very good audio too for what it is, and with the low price, wow what a contender, very good piece of kit indeed :)

Very nice unit for the price and by far, better image quality than the better 808 cameras that tend to compress the image more. I also find that they native record at 720 and then bump up to 1080 via software upscaling which never turns out well.

The Mobius ActionCam is super sharp. I love the rich saturated colours. Sky's look rich blue as opposed to the GoPro's dull grey sky's. It's the best value for money you can buy. Brilliant!

If you will look on the bottom of it you will see A small hole on each corner of it , you can put a string in it there !

Its a great cam. When compared to my GP3 Silver footage, its actually sharper. With the lens in perfect focus, I think the sharpness in somewhere between a Silver and Black GP3.

I've had battery problems with the 808#16 and finally fitted a diode between the plane receiver and camera .I've used it on several planes with servo extensions. The hardest part was drilling the ribs on a 3meter glider without removing covering. Use it on the wing tip set on a foam block

There are two holes at the back of the Mobius one may thread some wire through for the purposes of atatching a lanyard.

Nice to hear another kiwi voice. I'm considering getting one of these as my GoPro got squished after a particularly hard "unintentional landing". I don't think I can afford to cough up for another GoPro and this seems like it fits the bill.

Excellent work Bruce,i love the Mobius, as many have said excellent performance for the money.The only problem i have found is,the live out feed is very dark for fpv and if the sun is not shining brightly it is very difficult to see where you are going. Saying that as an all in one solution, in some respect it beats the Gopro.Weight,price and only lacking slightly on low light performance. Cheers and all the best.

Have you tried using the WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) with your Mobius,as that can make it bit better on them dark days we get here in the UK,still not brilliant but better than nothing. :-)

startazz I have tried the Mobius's WDR, It is awful compared to the Sony 600TVL It creates these weird colour shifts in the video - see video: Round-A-Bout. These days I run with WDR off as I prefer a few slightly dark areas compared to constantly shifting colours. It might be better in the later firmwares, but I'm scared to try :P Also make sure you are on the latest firmware. 0.57 made everything orange / brown - see video: Demonik Down ! 0.59 is the latest and is much better for greens, no orange ! - see video: Apott's Farm - Tree Surfing

Hey Bruce! Quick tip. if you stick the Velcro on the Mobius put a piece of rope or wire under it so you create a loop just like the key chain camera. And as always i really enjoy your videos! you have learned me allot:)

the video of it looks really nice in my opinion I might maybe get me one of these instead of the #16, or I could just get both either way. The mount that comes with the mobius might be very usable on a multirotor where the weight doesn't really matter that much and where u can screw in the mount or u could even use the tripod adapter but I think screwing in the mount will be a better idea in that case.

There are a pair of small holes to tie to in each of the four corners. I have one and I like it. It's easy to reduce the saturation during post production if you need to too.

The problem you described of the Mobius not having a ring or anything to attach to a piece of string of whatever you can get a product like GreenStuff which is a sort of epoxy clay, bassically 2 pieces of clay you need to knead together till it turns all green and then apply it to the surface and model away.

If you don't have much space, there's an extension cable for the camera unit itself, which is very small. So you can have the lens (camera) in one place and the rest of the unit inside.

Have a closer look at the back corners Bruce. There are holes there that you can hook a piece of string through and voila, you can now tie it to the plane.

Hi Bruce, there are 4 'small' holes on the underside of the Mobius (hidden by your velcro) to tie a tether to, they are tiny though. I've used one to tie on the lens cap with a thin nylon cord. Interesting your reason for using the fluffy side of velcro on the removable parts, I use the sticky side on all removable parts (especially batteries) so that they don't slide around in the carpeted boot or on the parcel shelf of my hatchback, what little muck they've picked up is not noticeable :)

I ditched my Gopro for one of these. The colour rendition is not top notch but the image is sharp and true 1080p. Excellent for FPV as well as being light and more or less crash proof if used in conjunction with velcro.

I reckon the mobius must have quite a fast shutter speed because when you compare it to the sony camera the movement looks quite staccato

Only downside I'm aware of is RC noise which can interfere with GPS signals. It seems most people are wrapping it in copper tape or putting in a wrapped tic tac box. It seems to fix the noise completely. RCModelReviews. Please put it on your spectrum analyzer for testing. Thanks.

you can attach a wire on the back check 12:35 in the right corner you can see a hole. it come out on the other side. you can put a fishing wire trough it and attach it to your plane.

I have this camera. I am very very happy with it. However i updated the cameras firmware an i cannot get the program on the computer that changes the setting to connect with the camera. To change the settings I have been using the txt file that you edit. Also the microphone has cut out a few times.

my green light stays on all the time even when its suppose to be off!it still works but if im not recording it will only stay on for about 30 sec then shuts down but the green light is still on.help please!

Id just like to say, I was originally scared to buy my Mobius because of the latency that shown in this video. Out of the box, it did have latency, but after the firmware update, I changed the lens option to 'lens b' (being that I have the wide angle version) in the Mobius software and I no longer have crippling latency. There is still a tiny bit of latency, but its a big difference from the latency out of the box.

They are really nice. I picked up the standard lens version last week from HK and compared to the ol' wing cams from HK the Mobius is feature packed and the lens is actually a lens :). I think one of the best parts is the PC software you can run to tweak the settings on the Mobius. Definitely download it and play. I think the only thing I wish the Mobius had was 60 fps on 1080p (it only does 30 fps on 1080p now) and also if they had a pluggable LCD display (pocket sized, etc.) for 'aiming' it would be really helpful. I use mine mostly as a "hat-cam" and aiming it and getting the shots lined up is the trickiest part. Good buy man! Good buy ;-). J

The new V3 is even better, safety ? no problem glued two small plastic kitchen hooks on my Easy Star and then comes a fat elastic band over the top of the camera in addition to the velcro, bit of extra security and it does work well. It's also a good idea to paint some stripes on with flourecent paint, or even a little white, finding a black camera in grass is not easy & this definitely helps ☺

Hi Bruce of RCModel review, would like to thank you for your videos and would like to ask a question on the mobius camera . I just recently got a hold of a 1.2 phantom rx and transmitter .would like to use the mobius as part of my fpv set up, however Iam not sure if I need a volt regulator to insure if the mobius will get correct current. I am using a basic set and will add osd,flight stabilizer , etc at a later time.Thank you and hope you can help me out on putting together my fpv set up.

Nice review! Actually there is an easy way to attach a safety line to it, by threading it through the two little slots on either side of the bottom. If you hold the camera up, you can see all the way through it through the holes in these slots. Can't seem to see through the corresponding slots on the bottom front of the camera, which is too bad since you could thread a line through there to tie onto the lens cap. Main problem I observe in the ground based videos I've recorded with my Mobius so far, is the lighting compromises it makes when there is a bright sky with less bright objects on the ground. The camera adjusts for the sky, and the ground objects look too dark to be seen well. This is easy, but necessary, to fix in post processing - after which the videos look great. Surprised your Mobius video looks so good in this regard. May try to use this for FPV when I get my new 350 sized OFM FreeX/SkyView quad (hopefully next month), if I can figure out a cost effective tx and rx set up for it. Hi RCModelReview Thanks for the mobius cam review I have recently purchased a mobius mini from banggood. It was working for 2 weeks then the cam stops recording when I pressed the shutter button - led light came on and then disappeared, nothing was recorded . Just wondering if you had encountered such issue and how to resolve it ? Many thanks & regards

I've thought about getting the mobius camera for my smaller planes and quads but I really can't see much, if any advantage to me over my #16 v2 camera's. The #16 v2 is cheaper, smaller and lighter, has video/audio out for fpv, I can rotate video before flying if mounting upside down, battery lasts between 30-40mins but I have it plugged into a spare channel on my rx for power. The only thing I see is the mobius video quality does look slightly better than the #16 v2, but at nearly double the price is it really worth it? Il probably still buy a mobius one day just to see for myself.

Have you measured how much UHF noise it emits, if any? The value-for-money factor is impressive. A GoPro3 BE costs about 7 or 8 times the price of the Mobius in Europe.
