Documentary on the mystery outlaw arts of Banksy: The Empire Of Outlaw Arts - Mysterious street artist Banksy uses his craft to create political and social statements.
The Empire Of Outlaw Arts (2020)
Director: Elio Espana
Writers: Elio Espana
Stars: Banksy (archive footage), Felix Braun, Claire de Dobay Rifelj
Genre: Documentary
Country: United Kingdom
Language: English
Release Date: February 18, 2020 (United States)
Synopsis:
Banksy, the world's most infamous street artist, whose political art, criminal stunts, and daring invasions outraged the establishment and created a revolutionary new movement while his identity remained shrouded in mystery.
Reviews:
"On the surface, this film is a truly enjoyable walk through the history of "outlaw art" from its humble beginnings as street graffiti, through gushing acceptance by the "art world" and to subsequent commercialization / corruption with the arrival of big money speculators and wannabe cool celebs.
However, an interesting and almost casual feature of this film is how Banksy -- who has clearly collaborated with the film-makers -- deliberately allows those who care to triangulate his true identity. By naming names and including detailed interviews with many of his early collaborators, the film casually unmasks our anonymous hero to anyone who know or cares about him or this corner of the art world.
Certainly that would include the many art auction houses who deal in his work and elitist art collectors who pay millions of dollars to hang a piece of public street art in their private mansions.
So, even as the film concludes that Banksy's anonymity is part of his legend, and an important piece of folklore that drives up prices for his art in the private market -- the exact opposite of what a street artist like Banksy desires -- by revealing his identity to anyone who cares, Banksy is pulling off the ultimate prank on the art world speculators and collectors, who now have to shut up about this identity, or risk losing value in their precious collections.
So, brilliantly, Banksy uses the art world's unbridled hubris as the means to reserving his anonymity and legend for the masses, for whom he truly produces his art anyway.
Amazing! Brilliant! And just Banksy (as usual)."

I thought Banksy was more of a novelty artist but I appreciate him a lot more after seeing this documentary. It's difficult to remain an outsider artist though when you are making all that money.

Research further and you'll find that Banksy hasn't profited from any monies. They've been distributed to charities. Banksy's social purpose remains untainted. Bless him.

43:10 I was so pleased see Jean-Michel Basquiat mentioned but I had no idea how much he influenced Banksy. "Tribute to Basquiat" at 44:40... Respect! I watched a documentary about Basquiat on YT and it certainly impressed me. SUCH a unique talent... and taken away far too soon. Sigh....

1.52.44 the bird animatronic in its cage is explicit in expressing how I felt when I changed from archaeology to an office job, so I wouldn't have to move/have time (as a single mother) to support my daughter through a difficult time...but in retrospect it finally became bad (as I got increasingly depressed). Life. Edit: also love the animal transport truck...mixing in "cute/valuable" and food/unworthy animals. They all have emotions and awareness and the same value.

I knew of Banksy before he was worldwide mainstream because of a random run in with his work on a wall in Switzerland while attending a small watchmaking school in the early 2000's. Its not a very well known fact around the world but Switzerland has more spray paint on walls all over the country that its shocking when you first see it in person. Its unexpected to say the least. You can be in the middle of the swiss Alps in literally the middle of nowhere and you will still see street art on walls. Its bananas. In the mid 2000's Graffiti in Switzerland was tolerated by the powers that be. It was considered art and that was what was unexpected. Imagine driving up this beautiful picturesque Swiss scenery and seeing a huge FUCK BUSH mural over the entrance of a Swiss underground highway tunnel probably 100ftx30ft of paint. Memorable to say the least. What I saw was some of Banksys monkeys at a train station. It was witty and was way ahead of its time in my humble opinion. I became a fan instantly. Banksy had this magic ability to bring what was considered unwanted vandalism into the realm of wanted wall art all over the world. He made people against graffiti want graffiti and that is his magic.

@rolexmd69 in Switzerland, how was your experience with the watch school? I've genuinely wanted to go and learn at some point in my life, found & read a few horror stories of people being scammed, just was curious about your experience 🤘

Graff writers and artists who don't respect stencil art are lost, pearl-clutching purists. You can see the knowledge and practice behind the form; don't hate just because someone had foresight to plan a piece ahead of time and minimize their risk.

There's, what I feel, is a beautiful art installation that like Banksy, has many talking. Pls look into "Where the rubber meets the road art installation". A very apropos and poignant statement in today's need to take care of our environment. I adore art that makes one stop, think and discuss.... if not shake other people up. Hope you enjoy.

31.34 think this is part of what I liked best at the time....because that wall and the politics/religious conflict in this area are so infuriating and it's all too easy to be judged as antisemitic if you argue in anyway against the annexation or situation for the Palestinians.

if gravity is good in art point of view of general public, i don't mind, if it shows no meaning at all, that's vandalism and should be criminalize

Saying that the more technical art is not good, what are you trying to say, who are you talking to..answer talking to my people and i know who they are. What trying to say? Answer every single painting has it's own special story, in order to know it, someone that knows will have to explain it. If all artists made wrt like Banksey, that would be terrible. Banksey is some other artist about comment @46:00 by scape martinez. Sad political statements like protest music are ok. Different artist might want to paint what he dreams up Why would someone be an artist to dream about politics?to make people feel sad? Why would other artist want to dream another artist's dreams.

Though a few may possess artistic talent the fact is... Graffiti is visual Pollution , others leaving there STUFF for those who come after to deal with, leaving what amounts to garbage. 😐 It IS vandalism. PERIOD. Self Absorbed canned crayon scribbles and nonsense. I don't want to walk into a toilet stall every time I leave my domicile. art is Self expression with basic common courtesy. Life is Art.

What a bleak attitude, but then again. That’s what makes us all different. Graffiti grips me hard and brings me back to a different era in time and engages a very different anti-establishment mentality that has been with me since childhood. Don’t tell me these pieces fail to speak a loud message to you….
