In this class you are going to learn all about the English modal verbs. They are:
can
could
may
might
must
have to
ought
shall
should
will
would
Now, immediately we are going to eliminate five of them. We are going to eliminate will and would because we use them to make the future tense and the conditional tense, which we study in other classes, and we are going to eliminate may, ought and shall because they are very unpopular in modern English. An analysis by the University College London shows that they were not very common to begin with and their usage has declined dramatically since the 1960s.
So that leaves us with six modals, that are the "core" modals in English. There are other modals and semi-modals such as "dare", "need" and "had better" but we are not going to be talking about them in this class.
Hopefully that explains everything you need to know about the core modals in English. See you in class!

Hello Christian, I have a question about the modal verb COULD as possibility. It is a bit confusing to me as you mentioned the past of could is created with present perfect but then there is she couldn't wait for impossible in the past. My question is: Can COULD as possible/impossible be used in the past without present perfect like in: They are late. They could get lost. They could have gotten lost? Thank you for your class and dedication. Inspiring as always.

Morning! I have a question: The books we use to teach English at schools say that MUST is for an obligation imposed by me. --> "I must get on a diet." (But if there is some pizza at dinner, I have it and there is no fine. I can start my diet tomorrow.) And, HAVE TO is for an obligation imposed by others. (Like a law) --> "You HAVE TO wear a uniform." (It's a private school), or "You HAVE TO stop if the traffic light is red." What are we doing wrong? Are the books oldfashioned or are we still in "the past era"? Or it's ME who is wrong? I'm sorry if I am. I hope you resolve my doubt. By the way, I really love your classes and I am able to understand every single word you say. I'm so happy!!! Regards from Argentina. Claudia*

You´re a really good teacher. I just wonder about "to be allow to" The example you said was "My mon allow me to do something" But there is not verb to be there. I could say "my mon let me to do something" instead. Isn´t more coomon to use "let" in that situation? Coming back to the structure "to be+allow to"for replacing "can", wouldnt be better to say "I´m allowed to eat cake"? Thanks in advance.

I have a confusion regarding bare infinitive that is used after almost all modal auxiliaries. Infinitive doesn't function like a verb, so modifying words like adverbs can't modify the bare infinitive for instance - work, run etc. But in this case ( you should work hard ) what the word 'hard' modifies ? Is this the bare infinitive 'work' or something else given in the sentence.please explain sir..I seek your reply soon on this...thanks

Hi Christian, Could you able to explain me this whole sentence -- "Hardly ever before in history can the decision to embroil a great nation in war have been taken so wantonly and with so little excuse." And also, what is meant by "...and with so little excuse" This sentence I have picked up from Cambridge dictionary. The sentence is made using the word "embroil". I know the meaning of the word "embroil", but I cannot able to apprehend the whole sentence structure. Thank you in anticipation.☺☺☺
@ricardopereirafigueira5017
@ricardopereirafigueira5017 3 жыл бұрын
"Hardly ever before in history" means that the decision (object) taken before (also in the past) was never taken in a easy way (difficulty to be decided, accomplished) and "with so little excuse" means that the decision was taken or decided with weak/poor arguments supporting the act of invansion. Overall it means nowadays countires invade other countries with no plausable excuses and they those who provoque wars they do it easily not like in the past that in order to do that would be more dificult or burocratic. I understand the meaning, i dont know hot to put it in a easier way rather than this.

Tense, aspect and mood - Study them before teaching them. There are 9 modal auxiliaries like the Cambridge chart says. "Will" is not a grammaticised feature of temporal information, so many linguists do not consider it to be a marker for "future tense", as it also expresses moods such as volition. "Future tense" is not even consider a pure "tense" in linguistic academia. Don't confuse tense with temporal information.

I think that it's too hard for natives to understand how non-natives see the world. You think you can explain something in the best way but you can't see the subject from our point. The problem of this lesson is a lack of full explanation. The modal verb 'can' also describes general possibilities, not only the abilities or permissions. For example: It can take two hours to get to the home if the traffic is bad. This sentence goes with 'can' because it's a general possibility that is true for a lot of people. Example 2: He could be very angry when he finds out. The specific possibility is the cause of usage 'could'. In the Russian language, we have one word to describe either possibilities or abilities.
