This build definitely had it's challenges and I considered not even uploading the video. I persevered and despite some things that could have gone better I'm happy with the final result.

Nice work Dennis, and lookin' good.🤗 I was wondering if CM ever used mallets... or perhaps double-headed their yard engines? Otherwise, I guess maybe just start at the east end and make a run for it! (lol)😬 🚂Lawrence

LOL, so far it's working pretty good. I have a heavier brass 2-8-0 (#360) that doesn't slip at all. Unfortunately the leading truck likes to wander into the wrong side of frogs... If I can figure out a way to keep it from frog wandering I'll use it in Frying Pan and move the #41 to Maroon Creek where the interchange will be. Thanks Lawrence!

@@OtterCreek Sounds good. If I were to make a S.W.A.G., I would posit that the lead truck needs a sloppier pivot and more downward tension and/or weight. (or not?)🙃
@OtterCreek
@OtterCreek 5 ай бұрын
@@locolorenzo astute, observation. I can confirm that it absolutely needs more weight. I’ll have to take a closer look about the sloppiness at the pivot point that is some thing I had not considered. I’m of the opinion that it also sits too far forward of the drivers.
@locolorenzo
@locolorenzo 5 ай бұрын
@@OtterCreek Wow, that sounds a little bit more involved!🤔 I've never considered the effect (or even the possibility) of moving the pivot point... it would probably change the lateral (steering) force on the drivers... as would lengthening or shortening the pilot truck, itself... as well as improving it's ability to behave itself when encountering those pesky frogs.🐸 It may be a trial-and-error kind of fix.😬 And, what about the pilot wheel flange profile (P.W.F.P.) - are they looking normal?😱 And, is the pilot axel square to the long axis of the pilot truck? (i.e. does it always track errantly to the left? or right?) And, is the pilot axel also square vertically to the pivot axis? (so that the wheels have equal contact with the rails? (that's another thing that a sloppier pivot might remedy, though in a mickey-mouse way) Fascinating and Mysterious! This has really got me thinking! Hopefully, you will tell us all about it in your upcoming video, "How I Fixed No. 360: and saved it from the brass recyclers".😊 Sorry, I was talking about axles, not axels! (I was watching an ice skating video earlier.)

Such a wonderful answer packed with plenty for me to look for the next time I feel inspired to work on the 360! I have compared the wheels with the standards gauge and didn't see anything obvious, but I'm not sure I know exactly what to look for. The Pilot has two pivot holes. I can move it where it is tucked in closer to the drivers, but it looks REALLY silly, but fewer derailments. I have mused absently of building a pilot truck out of styrene, but only if I could find a way to add weight which seems to be the primary problem with the "2's" in 2-8-0's. I wonder if there are any after market replacement pilots? The model is a NJ Custom Brass C-21... she runs pretty smooth but she is a growler and I have to turn the sound up louder than I prefer in order to ignore her moans and groans.

As I was watching your attempts going up the grade, I was shouting at my screen, "The cow catcher is hitting! The cow catcher is hitting! You're never going to make it, no matter how fast you go!" I was happy to see a few moments later you figured it out. I think the entire thing is very impressive, and you've done a great job. Congrats on making it work. =)

Nice build, Dennis. I think a big part of our model railroading design time involves solving problems created by our need to compress. Mock-ups are definitely the way to go.

Thanks!! Yes, I think all my tests were done thinking the final position would be further down. Though it's hard to see, the track begins crowding toward the trestle the further down I place it. We'll see what the future brings.

I like how you worked through the issue, thank you for sharing the building mishaps…. and how you adjusted the build to make it fit. Now on to the trestle build, great work, the method of using the flex track and removing all but a few ties to keep it in gauge and extra “jointery” on the ramp are very helpful hints, I keep reviewing the video and learn more. I really like the stain, what product did you use?
@OtterCreek
@OtterCreek 5 ай бұрын
Glad it was helpful! I used Hunter Line "tie brown" for the stain. Some of the pieces were stained with Builder and Square's "Dead Wood" first. I also like to set the pieces on paper to dry. Some I roll around to evenly distribute the stain, some I don't. That ensures some variety of color in the stain. Truthfully I should have used more plastic ties for gauging. There are a couple of places where the gauge is a bit too narrow. Thanks John!

really nice work on the trestle, lots of calculation there! Funny I have the same book with the signature, it looks the same as the one in your book, so I guess he really signed it. I always thought it was printed as part of the book.There is even a picture of the same trestle 80% demolished in 1922, a couple of pages later. What bugs me, are the dates mentioned in the 2 descriptions...

Dennis this is a great build. You point out some of the problems we can run into. You make a very strong case to use mock ups when we could have a problem with track placement. Keep up the great work. I do have a question. Who does the song for the intro to this video please? You have used this a couple of times in your videos and it is quite catchy.
@OtterCreek

Thanks Sierge. The song is called Dancin With the Devil. It's by a local artist named Dan Jordan. I was lucky enough to record a demo of just him singing and playing guitar on this song. I took his demo and produced it to the song you hear on my Channel. I'm playing drums, bass, electric and slide guitars. One of my favorites! You won't find this version anywhere but on my channel.

Awesome job man. All the "problems' are things only you'll notice! I eventually need to build something similar for my Albion 'A' yard. Inspirational! How similar is this to the D&RGW design coal trestles?
@OtterCreek
@OtterCreek 5 ай бұрын
Thanks Ray! I used blue prints of D&RGW standard trestle bents for the build. That being said it's a long way from being accurate. The biggest difference was the stringers There is supposed to be space between the three timbers for drainage. I had no desire to try and model something that tedious, especially since it will never bee seen. I think the balsa I used for them was also oversized. 12x12's for the caps, posts and sills and 3X10's for the sway braces. Eventually I will add a cat walk and other details like NBW's if I don't end up rebuilding the whole thing! LOL.

Hindsight, if only? Even though you had to figure through the difficulties you managed to do a incredible job. Have you considered notching the ground brace over the throws so the throwbars will slide under the brace? Just a thought. Still i believe the result is incredible

I haven't completely decided, but I'm leaning heavily toward eventually rebuilding the bridge and coal bins with a slimmer design so I can extend the entire model forward another few inches. I can't recall if I mentioned it in the video, but this was my first attempt at scratching this type of structure and made no attempt at the prototype coal bins. I have a bit more confidence that I could come up with something much closer to the prototype, and I have much better pictures ten when I started. Thanks Chris!!

Yes, that is model railroading. You seem to be conquering the accent to the coal triplet. Which is a fine looking model so far. Let me ask the obvious; You can't move the turnout back any to lessen the grade? I did enjoy the video and appreciate you sharing your planning and development of the model. I can sympaside a bit as I built a pile trestle with a 2% grade with a 18" radius (in can be seen in my videos). The math was not fun. Thanks again, Bob
@OtterCreek
@OtterCreek 5 ай бұрын
The east end of town is already compressed heavily. If I move the trunout any further down it will be directly in front of the Station. which would push the station away from the mainline. If I push the station down, then the pump house and the water tower end up Mal-aligned with the mainline, and the wye track. Also, it would likely change where the engine house would need to sit. All a bag of snakes I don't want to spill out on to the floor. The trestle works with a little bit of slippage. As said in the video, I'll run it for now and make a decision later if I want to rebuild it. Thanks for the input Bob!
@bobharris5872
@bobharris5872 5 ай бұрын
There is one other thing. you can raise the turnout vertically by relaying it on bridge (or doubled up std. ties) one or two mm's. This would reduce the vertical curve at the start of th ramp. It of course, would introduce slight grades on the tracks approaching the turnout which you would have to use slims under to raise. I would think the new grades there would have a minor, in any effect on operation. Ballast would hide the thicker ties. Just trying to help; Bob@@OtterCreek

@@bobharris5872 Thanks Bob! I agree this is a good idea. A slight hump in the mainline right where the turnout is. I operated this evening and didn't have any issues. We'll see how it goes over time. The biggest part of me want's a trestle closer to the prototype and moved down a few more inches. I'm just not eager to do it right now.

Hi Dennis. Your fidelity to the historical town is amazing. The pier and coal bin structure looks great. Just curious but were you restricted such that you couldn't move the approach switch rather than moving the structure?

Worthless suggestion. What if you started the transition to the grade with some plastic shims underneath a few ties? Ex: .010 for a tie or two and then.020 etc until you are where you need to be for a smooth transition 🤷‍♂️
@OtterCreek
@OtterCreek 5 ай бұрын
Thanks TC. I tried this with paper shims. There is no getting around the maths. The distance from the turn out which is 0 to the first bent is what it is. Unless I rebuild and redress the coal chutes so I can add another few inches to the run, it will just have to be the way it is. It does work, I just get the occasional slippage and I'm limited to one car at a time. Another option is moving the turnout further down. But that causes other issues that will take on a whole nother life of headaches. I'm happy for now.
