The Model A has a charming unique sound. I enjoy your videos and it is good to see someone of your generation that appreciates what others would not ....

Good work, Kyle. Even if all exhaust leaks are fixed, suggest installing rubber grommets/plugs in fire wall holes.

Great information! Thank you for sharing more of your "A" journey. The original design of the A intake/exhaust was a bit of a compromise. It was was simple, inexpensive and require a minimal amount of hand work to install on an assembly line. All positive attributes but not perfect. Remember, Ford would have process engineers watch the workers on the line and design parts and assemblies to speed up the assembly. "A" exhausts started having issues when they were relatively new. There were many after market fixes and replacements. Many of these also incorporated things like hot air heaters but the overall idea was a beefier, more sturdy casting and/or a hanger for the front of the muffler. Even as original they worked for decades and still do.

Great video both in content and production! I do have a couple of tips that might have come in handy BEFORE you worked on the project and may be helpful for others to come. Most of the reproduction Model A mufflers don't have the correct angle on the end that fits up to the exhaust manifolds, requiring jury-rigging extra parts like the gaskets and the small pipe you used. While you solved the problem, it could have been avoided by using an Aries Muffler. When you install ANY muffler on a Model A, it's important to get the front tube connected to the exhaust manifold BEFORE you connect the tail pipe to the frame so that you can get the front pieces to match PERFECTLY. When you do, no gaskets are needed! I've had my Aries muffler in place for over 20,000 miles and it's still quiet. Keep up the good work; looking forward to your future videos!

Glad to see you "going the distance" and doing things right instead of taking "shortcuts". That's a pretty nice car you have there and you are definitely "making it better" !!! 👍👍👍

I suggest you throw a blanket over the fenders when working with heavy/sharp edged parts. You will easily save the time needed to place the protection an save your paint

One thing always leads to another, that’s the fun of Model A’s. Plus it’s 90 years old.

Excellent job fixing those leeks, exhaust sounded great. Agree keeping plugging up the fire wall holes on the to do list. I find it amazing that you can get parts for the T that are not ridiculously priced.

The exhaust manifold leak is an example of why leak repair is such an annoying job in the repair business. Once the visibly leaking part is repaired, the next part either reveals that it is leaking, or cracks open because of the increase in pressure. This is why if you are an estimator at a repair shop, always prepare the customer for the idea that the one repair bill could turn to multiple bills, depending on what one thing leads to another.

with the issues you found out about , stopping at this point is a great idea ,i tried pushing a Knocking motor as a Teenager that was installed in a car and running but the damage done resulted in needing a Complete rebuild FYI it was not a Corvair but a VW WaterCooled 4 Cylinder yes i got it to run ,but at a much higher cost than just Refreshing a running motor IMO it’s generally best to have the internals on most engines being mostly Factory or OEM matched on older engines just my opinion and experience as they appear to run longer and better that way

I have to admit, I was prepared to do battle with the manifold bolts, but they threaded out so easily it was almost anti-climactic--but in a good way!

What brand of exhaust did you purchase? I've heard the Aries mufflers on two different cars (KZfaq videos) and the exhaust sounds a lot quieter. Loses that iconic Model A sound we all love.

Kyle, that flair ball union is designed to move, not be rigid, you make it rigid with that sleeve and you will damage the exhaust manifold!!!
@Flatlanders_Garage
@Flatlanders_Garage 4 жыл бұрын
Interesting. The clip where I admitted I ended up not using that sleeve got cut out, but even just the clamp makes the connection mighty stiff. Curious as to why there should be the ability to move? With the engine solid mounted, I would think it is only chassis flex (which there certainly is) that is would need to compensate for.

I would have just fabricated an entire new flared end myself, but then again, I'm a cheapskate so that's why. 😅

Probably a bad aftermarket exhaust. I have heard that the original had a larger flare on it than what some of the aftermarkets produced.
