Model a WORKING Spring in Fusion 360! (ADVANCED TIP)

I wanted to model a working spring in Fusion 360 that you can compress and expand, but I couldn't find any solutions online. I found a workaround that I haven't seen anywhere else.
Basically you split the spring in half, then apply revolute joints to each of the parts. Next constrain the spring into a slider joint so it can only move up and down. Finally add motion links to each joint so they all move more naturally.

Here we are, 3 years later, still no "natural spring" in Fusion! It could be so simply added...

Can you tell how it could be so 'simply added'? I'm curious. I think the problem has to do with how CAD software works at the core. Surface shape deformations are naturally possible in polygon based geometry modelling software but I've not seen a single CAD software that can make a spring work directly, we have to rely on splines and constraints.

I was making an assembly which had movement between two objects. Because of this I couldn't use the spring component during the simulation. Now that I have variable change of length in the springs it works perfectly.Thank you so much for this tutorial, it has made the visual aspect of my project so much better!

This is a great tip and tutorial and it worked for a compression spring but I was not able (yet) to make it work for an expansion spring. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the fact that you did not use keyboard shortcuts too much and was able to follow it step by step which is not the case with other Fusion 360 tutorials. Thank you!

Great tip! Loved it! I sort of improved the concept simply by putting the motion links between the revolute joints of the spring so that the washer is free of motion links and can therefore have a rest position. Also, I added revolute joints at each ends of the spring instead of making them fixed. So the entire spring is moving. The motion links are easier to get right since it is 360 for each joint instead of finding the number of degrees. Hope this make sense!
@MikeAndLaurenTV
@MikeAndLaurenTV 7 жыл бұрын
Great point! What values did you use for your revolute motion links?
@BlaiseBarrette
@BlaiseBarrette 7 жыл бұрын
That's the beauty of it... since it's a one to one ratio, you can leave them both to there 360 degree default value! :) Leave me your Fusion username and I will share the project with you so you can have a look at it if you like. You could also download it as a Fusion 360 archive from this link : a360.co/2pxEODu

I just downloaded it. It works great. I tried to replicate the results on my spring however, and I'm having trouble. Is there a reason you added your motion links in that order (the middle link last)? Did you decided to reverse some of them by eye or was there a pattern?
@BlaiseBarrette
@BlaiseBarrette 7 жыл бұрын
When I created the motion links, I simply got confused and missed the middle one so I did it last but the order in witch you create the motion links doesn't matter. The end result is the same. As for reversing some of them, I did just like you and reversed the ones going the wrong way. I didn't really pay attention for a pattern. If you have trouble replicating it on your existing spring, may be start from a fresh project? Although, this should not make any difference. Again, thanks for sharing this great tip! It made my day!!!

Hi Mike, congrats for your tutorial. I found it very brilliant! I also manage an Italian YT channel of Fusion 360 Tutorials. I would like to propose your tutorial also on my channel, if you agree. Nevertheless, I have some issues trying to follow your instructions. It seems that the entire model gets stuck after the creation of the third or fourth motion link. Since your tutorial is four years old, I'm wondering if your method is still working by using of the last version of the software. Have you recently repeated this procedure? Thanks in advance for your time.

cool I guess. I haven't used Fusion 360 yet but I'm planning to for some fun hobby projects. If you already use it and invested your time, I can see why this is an exciting hack. For me, it's more disappointing that I'd have to jump through all these hoops and that spring behavior isn't just built in. It's not like you're adding some fantastical concept. So many mechanical projects have springs.

Unfortunately, not that I was able to find. Most of the workarounds suggest using 2 spring models- one compressed and one at rest, then turning off/on each one as needed to see how it will interact.

Mike all this is important. I did sign up for your class. I am on the Candle Stick Holder. I also have SolidWorks student version as a retired military member I was able to get it for $25 bucks. I did not learn it. Fusion 360 came along and went with that route. So, I am glad you put this course together. If you try to design something and want to share by all means do so. That is what KZfaq is all about. We want to learn and make things. I do think you punch a hole in what some of us need and you are fulfilling that need in the marketplace so, good for you and "US". Take a look at SVSeeker at the end of his videos people send in pics on that the have been making. I think perhaps you can do something similar to inspire us on the other end of KZfaq. Keep up the good work on this and I speak for myself I am "SO GLAD YOU PUT THIS COURSE TOGETHER" and offered it at a reasonable price. Try to get the kids involved in this. It is a Designer Shop Class in the making. I hope you and the Misses had a great day. Will from Akron, Ohio
