In this special episode of the Southern Pacific consist build, Dan focuses on putting together EMD spartan cab interior kits from Cannon.
The SP Consist Build series is about Dan's efforts to recreate a set of 5 locomotives he photographed on the front of a Southern Pacific grain train in Truckee, California in 1993. There were two SP SD45Rs, a Cotton Belt B30-7, a Conrail SD40, and an EMD Leasing GP38-2.
The past few episodes have focused on the Conrail SD40, as it's the closest one to being finished (aside from the GP38-2, which was already finished when the series started).
Dan has been working a lot on the SD40, and in previous episodes has added new LED interior lighting and a speaker for sound.
Having a cab interior in a model is definitely better than not having anything in there. Though some details can't be seen very easily in a finished model, the cab interior adds to the overall effect.
Cannon's EMD cab interior kit has been around for some time, and is still a good representation of an EMD cab. It has a control console, floor, front and rear bulkheads, and seats.
Since this kit can fit in many different EMD locomotives, Dan wanted to make this a standalone episode within the series. It could be of interest to anyone wanting to add a cab interior to EMD locomotives from the GP35 through the GP60 and SD60 series.
Join Dan for some HO scale diesel detailing fun!

Keystone Locomotive Works made or makes an interior kit for early EMD locomotives in HO. I'm not sure if they're still in production, but sometimes they show up on eBay. The Cannon kit might be adaptable for an F or E unit with a modernized control stand. Thanks for watching!

Hello Dan, great work as usual. I like to paint my interiors a light seafoam/EMD green. BTW, If you ever feel like you need even more LED's in a model. I have found you can drill out a small hole from the bottom of the control stand to install a SMD LED. Drill out the 4 gauges, fill the area with canopy glue, place the SMD LED, then install the back covers. You now have a lighted control stand. :)

Hi Dan, The gray color you chose for the cab is actually really close to the real thing, thought you might take some relief in learning that. Pretty much all later EMD standard cabs received this color. The black rectangular part on top of the brake assembly is the locomotive radio. Most of the time those are black and they’re usually always on top of the brake assembly.

Avon Yards is where I was fortunate enough to be inside one of the conrail 6 axles. The enterior color was a county bridge green. This was a sd-38-2 with slug. This was in 1987-89 time frame. My uncle was the conductor, and I was lucky for three years to go and experience the yard life! It is something I will never forget.

Sweet, I grew up near the Anderson Indiana yard and in my younger days I got to ride the 3 times a day switch engine switching out boxcars at Jefferson Smurfitt Container!!! The Crew would stop at my Grand Parents house pick me up and put me on the engine, then return me when they finished. It was still NYC going into PC years when the DOW line from Anderson to Elkhart yard was in pitiful shape due to recent neglect, and to think a Freight went North or South past there every 30 or so minutes!!!

I've mixed a pale green color for some other cabs, basically something like BN green mixed with white. Thanks for the info. Even if the color in my model isn't right, I think the overall effect is good. Thanks for watching!

Always nice to see a new Model Building episode uploaded, big fan of this series. A little off topic, but have you considered getting the newly announced Scaletrains SP SD45R GRIP rebuilds? They look like they could fit on the Donner Pass layout.

It may not be required for a diesel to have a cab interior, but it’s a different story if it’s a steam locomotive.

This is on a completely unrelated note, but I’m thinking about building and detailing an older Roundhouse 50’ WP boxcar kit and wanted to know if the numbering/lettering decals are easy to remove? The style of lettering/numbering out of the box is incorrect (Microscale makes the correct decals). I saw the video on TSG of your Yreka Western (Roundhouse kit) detailing so thought I’d ask.
@DanielCortopassi
@DanielCortopassi 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about removing the lettering from an older Roundhouse kit. You could try some Micro Set and rubbing first, as that's the least destructive way I can think of to do it. On some Athearn models you can use Micro Set, then either rub with a micro brush or use some tape over the lettering to pull it off without hurting the paint. If that doesn't work you could try something stronger, like a hobby paint stripper. I've done that on some models by applying the paint stripper with a micro-brush on the lettering only, and rubbing. It doesn't always work, though. I've had cases where the paint around the lettering comes off but the lettering stays. I'd experiment on a small area first. If it's a flat-sided car (not ribbed) you could also maybe try some fine sandpaper, but I'd be super cautious. Good luck and thanks for watching!
